ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

"It is not possible to prepare a project report without the assistance & encouragement of

other people. This one is certainly no exception."

With great pleasure I want to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt

gratitude to all the people who helped in fulfilling the accomplishment of this Survey

Camp.

I am grateful to my project coordinator Mr. K. Sai Baba , Asst. Professor,

Department of Civil Engineering, for sharing his truthful and illuminating views on a

number of issues during the Camp.

I also extend my gratitude to Mrs. K.N. Usha and Mrs. Santhoshi ,Department of

English, for their valuable guidance and support on completion of this project report.

I would like to thank Dr.K.Ram Chandra Reddy, Head of Civil Engineering

Department, for sparing time and providing necessary information patiently and his

cooperation in the preparation of report.

We are highly indebted to Principal Prof. M. Mutha Reddy for giving us the

permission to carry out this Survey Camp.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Dr. P. Rajeshwar Reddy, Chairman,

Anurag Group of Institutions for providing necessary infrastructure which facilitated to

carry out my project work easily

We also express my deep gratitude to the Mahathma (Kalwakurty) Lift Irrigation

Project team for providing necessary information and their cooperation in the

preparation of report

I. Preface

We, the students of civil participated in the Survey Camp

which was held at Nagar Kurnool from 20 to 22 March,

2014. The Camp was organized by The Department of Civil

Engineering led by Dr. K. R. C. Reddy, Head of department

and Mr. K. Sai Baba , Assistant professor. The Survey Camp

had the following objectives:

1) To enable us to gain a deeper understanding of the

surveying subject through site visits;

2) To relate the class room learning to real world situations;

3) To broaden students' horizons and students' global

cultural awareness through interaction with experienced

engineers.

The Survey Camp also enabled us to visit an ongoing

construction of Mahathma (Kalwakurthy) Lift Irrigation

project in Mahabubnagar district. It was a very valuable and

inspirational experience for us to interact and discuss with

site engineers and workers.

We performed very well in organizing the 3 days camp and

developing our interpersonal relationships with classmates,

mentors and professors.

Page 7: Engineering Survey camp repot (2014)

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the

Shanthinekethan High School, Nagar Kurnool management,

for giving us accommodation and treated us like their good

friends.

II. Overview

The Survey Camp was undoubtedly one of the most

incredible memories in my college life. The acquisition of

knowledge and interpersonal happiness obtained from the

camp hardly be acquired from books and lectures. We are

delighted and grateful to have such an excellent camp

organized by the College not only to travel, but also to learn,

to explore and to reflect.

This report covers an array of highlights of the Survey Camp.

After this camp, we have realized that Engineering Survey is

vitally important as a golden opportunity for us. The rapid

development in Civil Engineering Methodology has

broadened our horizons and made us eye-opening.

For our personal achievements, we have established a long-

lasting friendship among peers. We have gained much

confidence in our interpersonal relationship.Besides, I want

to say thanks to Dr. K. R. C. Reddy, Mr. K. Sai Baba and the

Mentors who were really helpful and insightful to design

the camp. I hope they could also find the camp joyful and

awesome

III.Details of Site Visits

Day 1:

On the first day of the Camp, we visited an open land area

and did the Contour Lines experiment with equipment like

total station, chain, tape, telescope, ranging rods etc. And

later, we took all the values that we got from the

equipment and recorded it on the drawing sheet. The

opportunity to survey on a large piece of uneven land which

is a difficult proposition even for experienced engineers

exposed us to real time professionals. In addition our

Assistant Professors guided us through the exercise thus

boosting our confidence to handle difficult experiment in

the future.

Day 2:

On the second day of the Camp, we visited the ongoing

construction of the Canal to the Mahathma (Kalwakurthy)

Lift Irrigation project near Nagar Kurnool village. A Survey

Page 10: Engineering Survey camp repot (2014)

revealed that ,the canal starts from the back waters of

Srisailam Dam near Kollapur. The canal will meet the

drinking water needs of over 303 villages en routed 22

through ares including Kollapur, Nagar Kurnool, Achampet,

Jadcherla, Wanaparthy and Kalwakurthy areas.

There we learnt how the Engineers are doing the project

and we took all the values of the project by ourselves with

all the latest equipment like Total station, Telescope, Chains,

Tapes etc. This visit made us experienced so that in future

we can do the projects without any confusion. We had an

opportunity to meet the Geotechnical Engineers who were

working there. The interaction with Geotechnical Engineers

helped us gain an additional knowledge besides the

Engineering Survey subject that how and why they chose

the specific land for the laying of the Canal.

Day 3:

On the third day of the camp, we have the ongoing

construction of Mahathma (Kalwakurthy) Lift Irrigation

Project which is near Nagar Kurnool village in

Mahabubnagar district. The visit was took up half a day.

From studies, it is obvious that Mahathma (Kalwakurthy)

Page 11: Engineering Survey camp repot (2014)

Lift Irrigation Scheme is proposed to provide irrigation

facilities to an extent of 2,50,000 acres and utilizing 25 TMC

of water including drinking water facilities to 3,20,000

population (0.73 TMC) in the chronically drought affected

areas in Mahabubnagar district by lifting water from

Krishna River from the foreshore of Srisailam Reservoir at

Regimangadda of Yelluru (V) in Kollapur (M).

Details of proposals: -

It is proposed to lift water from foreshore of Srisailam

Reservoir in 3 stages.

1st Stage: - Water will be drawn from Srisailam foreshore

through an approach channel and a tunnel and lifted into

Yellur Balancing Reservoir through a pressure main.

2nd Stage: - From Yellur Balancing Reservoir, water will be

drawn through gravity canal and dropped into Singottam

Balancing Reservoir and from there water will be lifted to

Jonnalabogada Balancing Reservoir through another tunnel

and pressure main.

3rd Stage: - Water from Jonnalaboguda Balancing Reservoir

will flow through gravity canal and a tunnel and will be

lifted through a pressure main and dropped into

Gudipalligattu balancing reservoir.

IV. Conclusion &

Recommendation :

Since, Mahabubnagar district falls under the Tropical semi-

arid (steppe) climate region. I could say that it is a perfect

choice to construct the Mahathma (Kalwakurthy) Lift

Irrigation Project near Nagar Kurnool village.

From the findings of the study, I may recommend that by

use of rotating blades at the end of the discharge pipes

could be used to generate electricity usually results in lower

costs.
