Founded in 1963, we are a group of company with international operations and an excellent reputation in the energy industry. We offer our customers planning, consulting and technical services for power generation plants and for transmission and distribution networks.

In the past, we belonged to various power plant operators, most recently from 2002 to 2014 as a consultancy and engineering business within the Vattenfall Group, trading under the name of Vattenfall Europe PowerConsult. In 2014, we were taken over by palero, a private financial investor, and are now exclusively ori-ented towards the needs of our customers.

With over 1,000 employees worldwide and over 50 years of experience with projects totalling over 70,000 MW in capacity, we rank among the largest and most experienced engineering companies in the energy sector in Germany. Our main customers are suppliers of electricity and heating, and network operators. Well-known power plant equipment suppliers and EPC contrac-tors, government departments, research institutes and internati-onal development banks also place their trust in our many years of experience.

We are involved in the planning and design, engineering, cons-truction supervision, commissioning and dismantling of power plants using a wide range of technologies and varying widely in service life accrued. Our combination of engineering know-how and experience as an operator enables us to keep a focus on minimizing the total life cycle costs. kinds of renewables, and above all in the fields of biomass, hydro power, solar energy (photovoltaic and concentrated solar power), wind and geothermal energy.

VPC RENEWABLES

At VPC Renewables, we create solutions for all areas of the new world of energy, drawing on our system know-how from the field of conventional power generation. Our experience with complex systems and the effects of changes and our perspective as an operator ensure that we produce the results the market demands. BiomassHydrothermal gasification – We are currently developing a highly efficient and economical process for the production of fuel gas (methane, ethane and hydrogen) from biomass and biogenic substances (e.g. sewage sludge and organic waste).

Electricity storage – Our rotating mass storage conceptThe storage of large quantities of electricity on a daily basis will be a necessity from 2025 onwards. Additionally, there are only limited opportunities for expansion of pumped storage facilities in Germany. There are a number of technical alternatives (such as power to gas and storage batteries), but the obstacle is their economic viability for storing large quantities of electricity.

For distributed storage, batteries are the method of choice. At critical points in the transmission network, however, centralized large-scale storage facilities will also be needed as a supplement to the pumped storage power plants. And that is precisely what we are aiming at with the development of a new technology. With an extremely heavy ring, supported on magnetic bearings and rotating extremely fast – our rotating mass storage system.

Energy islands for self-sufficient supplyCurrent developments show that the costs of generating electricity from wind and photovoltaic systems, and of electricity storage systems (e.g. storage batteries) are continuing a steep decline. In order to exploit this trend for the benefit of medium-sized enterprises, we have developed the concept of “energy islands”: off-grid systems (also referred to as “island systems”) consisting of wind turbines, photovoltaic systems, storage facilities and gas or diesel generators. Electricity from systems like these is now significantly cheaper than supplies from the public grid. (Savings of 50% and more are now possible with these systems, including benefits derived from exemptions from grid fees and transfer pay-ments under the Renewable Energy Act in Germany.)
