‘This book should be in your shopping cart. The authors present the subject matter in clear, concise terms without leaving out any important details. Although the overwhelming majority of the text is chock-a-block with regression-analysis based formulas, and frequently republished figures, there are enough double integrals and differential equations to validate the presence of the work in a theorist’s professional library.’Marine Technology

Engineers face many challenges in systems design and research. Modeling and

Approximation in Heat Transfer describes the approach to engineering solutions

through simplified modeling of the most important physical features and approxi-

mating their behavior. Many excellent textbooks on thermal science have been

written. Yet, most of these texts lack any systematic discussion of how modeling

and associated synthesis can be carried out – in engineering practice, these steps

very often precede mathematical analysis or the need for precise results. This

text stresses modeling in physical terms, rather fancy calculations. With the aid

of the book, students have greater facility in breaking down complex engineer-

ing systems into simplified thermal models that allow essential features of their

performance to be assessed and modified.

Climate Change: A Wicked ProblemComplexity and Uncertainty at the Intersection of Science, Economics, Politics, and Human BehaviorFrank P. IncroperaUniversity of Notre Dame, Indiana

Under one cover, Frank Incropera provides a comprehensive, objective and critical assessment of all issues germane to the climate change debate: science, technology options, economic ramifications, cultural and behavioural issues, the influence of special interests and public policy, geopolitics and ethical dimensions. The underlying science is treated in depth, but in an approachable and accessible manner. A strong case is made for the reality of anthropogenic climate change, while confronting the range of issues that remain uncertain and deconstructing opposing views. Incropera assesses the strengths and weaknesses of technology options for mitigating the effects of climate change, analyzes nontechnical factors – economic, cultural and political – and provides an in-depth treatment of ethical implications. This book is intended for those wishing to become fully informed about climate change and is designed to provide the reader with a firm foundation for drawing his or her own conclusions.

‘This remarkable book … offers [a] most balanced, unbiased and holistic view … respect[s] the reader’s prerogative to make up their own mind … As we enter a period of intense global and national discourse on this important topic, the timing of this book could not be better. People worldwide need to read Dr

Incropera’s book to map out for themselves the panoramic view of this multidimensional complex issue.’Arun Majumdar, Jay Precourt Professor, Stanford University; Former Vice President for Energy, Google; Founding Director, US Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E); and Former US Acting Undersecretary of Energy, Department of Energy, from the Foreword

Optimization ModelsGiuseppe C. CalafiorePolitecnico di Torino

and Laurent El GhaouiUniversity of California, Berkeley

This accessible textbook demonstrates how to recognize, simplify, model and solve optimization problems – and apply these principles to new projects.

‘In Optimization Models, Calafiore and El Ghaoui have created a beautiful and very much needed on-ramp to the world of modern mathematical optimization and its wide range of applications. They lead an undergraduate, with not much more than basic calculus behind her, from the basics of linear algebra all the way to modern optimization-based machine learning, image processing, control, and finance, to name just a few applications. Until now, these methods and topics were accessible only to graduate students in a few fields, and the few undergraduates who brave the daunting prerequisites. The book’s seamless integration of mathematics and applications, and its focus on modeling practical problems and algorithmic solution methods, will be very appealing to a wide audience.’Stephen Boyd, Stanford University

The Cambridge Dictionary of Probability and its ApplicationsDavid StirzakerSt John’s College, Oxford

Probability comes of age with this, the first dictionary of probability and its applications in English, which supplies a guide to the concepts and vocabulary of this rapidly expanding field. Besides the basic theory of probability and random processes, applications covered here include financial and insurance mathematics, operations research (including queueing, reliability, and inventories), decision and game theory, optimization, time series, networks, and communication theory, as well as classic problems and paradoxes. The dictionary is reliable, stable, concise, and cohesive. Each entry provides a rigorous definition, a sketch of the context, and a reference pointing the reader to the wider literature. Judicious use of figures makes complex concepts easier to follow without oversimplifying. As the only dictionary on the market, this will be a guiding reference for all those working in, or learning, probability together with its applications.

‘To construct a dictionary about such an enormous field is a daunting task, and David Stirzaker deserves high praise, first for even attempting to do so, and second for the success he has achieved. A dictionary’s usefulness depends on its organisation as well as

on the quality of the individual entries, and this book’s structure is simple and logical: two initial pages list the abbreviations and symbols, then the main body of 3000-odd entries with easy-to-use cross-referencing, ending with an appendix of probability distributions … I shall be delighted to possess this authoritative tome. It will sit alongside Abramowitz and Steguns’ Handbook of Mathematical Functions as a reliable source of enlightenment.’John Haigh, University of Sussex
