2017-18 AES Officer TeamMegan CairdPosition: SMB Club Council RepYear: SophomoreMajor: Agricultural Systems Management

Why did you choose Cal Poly?I chose Cal Poly because it’s a great school for agriculture and I’m interested in going into my family’s agriculture business. It’s also close to home and both of my grandparents graduated from this school.

Why did you apply to the BioResource and Agricultural Engineering Department?I applied to the BRAE department because I knew I wanted to go into Agriculture and I was in an engineering academy in high school and really enjoyed it so I thought I would combine the two.

What has been your favorite part of AES?The quarterly activities or the monthly general meetings.

What has been your favorite class at Cal Poly?COMS 101- Public Speaking!

What has been your favorite experience in the BRAE Department? When I went to the ASABE competition in Spokane, Washington this past summer for the PAAC club. We competed in a robotics competition. We didn’t do very well but it was a great bonding experience.

Where do you see yourself in five years? In five years, I see myself working somewhere in California in an agricultural business. Then eventually going back home to manage my family’s business.

Hometown: Santa Barbara, CA

4Jobs and Internships

From Boots to Suits... Clean up and get hired!

Now that you know the when, here are some tips for success at each Career Event:1. Dress to impress! 2. Bring Business Cards. A handy little card with all of your information in one place can be the best

way to make an impact. If you receive someone else’s card, be sure to follow up within 24 hours. VistaPrint.com is fast, cheap, and easy!

3. Have an updated Resume. Take advantage of career services and faculty review. Keep an eye open for the AES Resume Workshop later in the month.

4. Do not carry a backpack. Look like a professional! Carry a folio or other folder with all your documents.

5. Update your LinkedIn ahead of time. Add job experiences, class history, volunteering and community service.

6. Shake Hands and use proper eye contact. Nothing makes a worse an impression than a dead fish handshake.

7. Make conversation! Many of the recruiters are Cal Poly Alum, even if not most attend every year. Career showcases are great ways to network for the future and make yourself known.

Have you spruced up your resume? Find someone in the industry you’re looking to work in, have them look it over. Update you LinkedIn profile, have classmates, advisors and professors write you recommendations while you’re still in school and your work is at the top of their mind. Come up with a list of your skills and truly learn how to communicate them to others. Show that you can work in a team atmosphere, you can solve problems and make decisions. Highlight how you can plan, organize and prioritize work.

The next big step is becoming noticed by those companies interested in hiring interns and full time employees. Luckily, there are THREE great options in your near future:

January 18th and January 19th is the annual Ag Business Showcase sponsored by the Agriculture Busi-ness Management Club. This year, the Farm Shop will be filled with a record 100 Agricultural based companies looking to hire both interns and full time employees in the upcoming months (especially summer)!

January 24th & 25th is the Winter Cal Poly Career Fair. Cal Poly Career Services is hosting this two-day, all out job hunt bonanza featuring over 200 companies in the Recreation Center.

February 8th is the AES Career Showcase. AES is hosting the annual career showcase encompassing Ag Engineering and related companies. AES will also be hosting an interview and resume workshop to help prepare students for the BRAE Career Fair on January 31st. It will include pizza, free resume paper, and resume advice from Krista Burke, CAFES Career Services Advisor.
