SUSTAMID® – NYLONS

•• 7

Nylons are also known as “polyamides” and constitute the workhorse of Engineering Plastics and are available in a wide range of grades. The primary grade is Type 6 and although originally offered in extruded format (Type 6 E) advanced production techniques now provide this grade in “Monomer Cast” (Type 6 G) format thus providing increased flexibility of manufacture and improved performance.

The Sustamid® range of Nylons provide optimum bearing qualities with additional grades providing improvements in abrasion resistance, chemical, thermal and low friction properties. Hardness and strength, yet toughness and tenacity are the combination that makes Nylon so versatile and the chosen product for many applications.

Typical applications are journal and slide bearings, bushings, gears, crane sheaves, cams, pulleys, electrical insulators and wear parts.

STANDARD GRADES

SUSTAMID® PA 6 G NATURAL: The standard basic grade which has the optimum combination of mechanical strength, stiffness, impact strength, good sliding properties and abrasion resistance. A high resistance to aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons such as fats, oils and fuels. Natural grade also corresponds to food safety guidelines.

SUSTAMID® PA 6 GMO (MOLYBDENUM DISULPHIDE ENHANCED): This grade has all the properties of Natural but with the extra advantage of MOS2 solid lubricant to increase hardness, improve frictional properties and abrasion resistance.

SUSTAMID® PA 6 GOL (OIL FILLED): Also having the properties of standard grade, oil filled enhancement provides a thin film lubricant to the surface of the material but only when subjected to constant pressures and speeds.

SUSTAGLIDE® - PLUS: A highly modified tribological grade

containing a non abrasive mineral

filler and specialty lubricants providing

increased bearing capacity, higher

hardness and temperature stability,

increased wear and abrasion resistance

together with an extremely low coefficient

of friction. This higher performing grade

also provides zero “stick-slip”.

Thermoplastic polymers can be divided into amor-phous and semi-crystalline on the basis of their struc-ture.

Polymers with an amorphous structure are normal-ly transparent and tend to be sensitive to stresscracking. They are suitable for making precision partsdue to their high dimensional stability.

Semi-crystalline plastics are opaque, mostly toughand show good or very good chemical resistance.

Plastics can also be differentiated according to theirtemperature resistance:

High-temperature plastics have long term servicetemperatures of above 150 °C and have a high levelof thermo-mechanical properties.

Plastics suitable for the highest application tempera-tures (PI, PBI, PTFE) cannot be processed usingmelting processes. Production of parts is carried outby sintering.

Engineering plastics can be used permanently attemperatures between 100 °C and 150 °C. They exhibit good mechanical properties and goodchemical resistance.

Standard plastics can be used permanently at tem-peratures below 100 °C.

The above pyramid of plastic materials shows a de-tailed overview of thermoplastic polymers on thebasis of these criteria.

SUSTARIN® ACETAL COPOLYMER – P.O.M (Poly Oxy Methylene)

•• 9

Sustarin® Acetal is a high crystalline thermoplastic with a high level of stability and rigidity as well as good sliding properties and wear resistance with low moisture absorption. Its good dimensional stability, exceptional fatigue resistance and excellent machining properties make Sustarin® Acetal a versatile design material.

Stability, rigidity and dimensional stability can be further improved by adding glass fibres as filler, although this decreases sliding properties.

A distinction is made between homopolymer (POM-H-Delrin®) and copolymers (POM-C-Hostaform®); homopolymers have a higher density, hardness and stability due to their higher degree of crystallinity. However, copolymers have a higher impact resistance, greater abrasion resistance and better thermal / chemical stability.

POLYCARBONATE SUSTANAT®

10••

Polycarbonate is a carbonated Bisphenol A, a transparent (sheet) or semi-transparent (rod) material of high

strength with an excellent balance of toughness, clarity and high heat deflection, a versatile engineering

thermoplastic. Dimensional stability, excellent electrical insulation properties and inherent ignition resistance are

its other outstanding features. Polycarbonate exhibits very high impact strength over a wide range of temperatures

from -54°Cto+121°C. Humidity changes have little effect on dimensions of moulded polycarbonate parts. Even

boiling water does not change dimensions more than 0.001m/m after parts are returned to room temperature

however continuous exposure in hot water at 65°C cause gradual embrittlement.

Sustanat® Rod is a specially formulated steam resistant food grade which will sustain steam sterilisation for up to

100 hours at 120°C making it useful for applications in the medical field.

aliphatic hydrocarbons and alcohols. Aldehydes, ethers, esters, ketones, perchlorinated hydrocarbons and

aromatic hydrocarbons have adverse affects. Alkalines, alkali salts, amines and high ozone concentrations destroy

polycarbonate. Extreme care must be taken when machining as conventional cutting fluids will also adversely affect

polycarbonate. Water or compressed air is recommended. Mar resistant sheet provides improved chemical protection*.

SUSTADUR® P.E.T.P (Poly Ethylene Terephthalate)

12••

HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE (H.D.P.E) (PE 300)High Density polyethylene has good chemical resistance although it is affected by aggressive oxidising agents

such as nitric acid and aromatic hydrocarbons. It does not absorb moisture and has good electrical properties and

a certain degree of toughness. Although having similar mechanical properties to U.H.M.W.P.E it does not have the

same abrasion resistance, coefficient of friction, impact strength or wear properties and therefore should not be

considered as a low cost option in arduous applications.

Applications in chemical tanks, cutting boards, low duty bearings and wear strips.

H.D.P.E is available in natural & black coloured rod and sheet. Also available is Low Density

(L.D.P.E) Polyethylene natural sheet primarily used for orthotic and prosthetics.

RIGID P.V.C (INDUSTRIAL GREY AND CLEAR)

A new generation clear material which exhibits excellent optical clarity combined with impact strength second only to

Polycarbonate and very good chemical resistance. This material is quite versatile and can be cold formed and fabricated with

ease. Sheets are available in thicknesses ranging from 1.0mm to 12.0 mm.

The molecule structure of P.E.T.P can be produced either as an amorphous or semi-crystalline thermoplastic. The amorphous type is crystal clear with lower mechanical stability and inferior sliding properties.

Sustadur® is a semi-crystalline type which has a higher level of hardness, rigidity and stability with excellent sliding properties and low sliding abrasion. Because of its good creep resistance, low level of moisture absorption and excellent dimensional stability, Sustadur® is ideally suited for complex parts with the highest demands on dimensional stability and surface finish.

The wear resistance and sliding properties of Sustadur® - TF have been improved, due to a much lower coefficient of friction, compared to pure P.E.T.P by adding a special homogenously distributed solid lubricating agent.

A very low rate of thermal expansion makes Sustadur® an excellent choice for close tolerance parts and together with itshighhardnessmakesitidealformachining.Italsoahasaveryusefulworkingtemperatureof-30°Cto+120°C

Sliding PropertiesSustadur® has excellent sliding properties, very good wear resistance and, in combination with its other properties, is and excellent material for highly loaded sliding applications. This also applies tom applications where high levels of humidity or wetness are expected.

The modified Sustadur® - TF is especially suitable for highly loaded sliding

SUSTADUR® P.E.T.P (Poly Ethylene Terephthalate)

applications in dry running operations due to its integrated solid lubricating agent. Sustadur® - TF has a much higher load-bearing strength (pressure-velocity limiting value) compared to pure P.E.T.P and also prevents the stick-slip effect.

Chemical ResistanceSustadur® is resistant to weak acids and alkaline solutions, salt solutions, perchlorinated and fluorinated hydrocarbons, oils, fuels, solvents and surface-active substances. Strong polar solvents have an irreversible swelling effect. Sustadur® is not resistant to strong acids or alkaline solutions, esters, ketones or chlorinated hydrocarbons.

Typical applications include bushes, bearings, sliding elements, insulators, cam discs and rollers.
