Head Gaskets (PT)Evolving DesignsHead gasket designs have changed over time. Today, engineers are continuing to develop new sealing solutions and materials (such as multi-layer steel construction or expanded graphite facings) because new engine designs and updates of older engines require advanced materials and constructions. Some new gasket designs may even be applied to older engines, so the head gasket for a particular application may look different from what was used previously.

MLS head gaskets are one design becoming more common. With their thin rubber coating and multiple layers of stainless steel shims they provide the ultimate in torque retention and have the strength needed to seal and survive on current lightweight aluminum casting designs.

Whatever the engine, with Fel-Pro,® jobbers can assure their customers that the offering for a particular application is the best sealing solution available.

New Fel-Pro Head Sets, featuring PermaDryPlus technology! ®

Engine Repair Sealing Products:

The right gasket set for installing a fully assembled headFel-Pro® offers Head Installation Sets (HIS) designed to save money by giving the technician the exact gaskets needed for installing an already reconditioned or fully assembled head. These sets do not include the parts that aren’t needed, so technicians aren’t forced to buy parts that aren’t required. For example, the Fel-Pro HIS set for one common domestic engine eliminates the plastic intake manifold gasket and exhaust pipe-to-manifold gasket included in a complete head set because these parts aren’t required for installation of a fully assembled head.

Be sure your stores know about HISCountermen should be sure to ask the technician if they are rebuilding the cylinder head or installing an already reconditioned head. Then they’ll know whether to sell a Head Installation Set (HIS) or a complete Head Set (HS). The Fel-Pro catalog will show the availability of a head installation set under the Cylinder Head Section. Coverage is available for many popular applications.

Fel-Pro head installation sets have the right technologyEach Fel-Pro HIS set includes the ideal gasket technologies for the application. In select cases, the HIS set will include a Fel-Pro PermaTorqueMLS® multi-layer steel head gasket, rather than a composite-type gasket, due to the engine’s more demanding operating characteristics. HIS sets also include the respected PermaDry® molded-rubber valve cover gaskets, when required. Fel-Pro Head Installation Sets (HIS) include:

Cylinder head gaskets

Intake manifold gaskets

Intake manifold plenum gasket

Exhaust manifold gaskets

Valve cover gaskets

Valve cover grommets

Valve cover semi-circular plug

Spark plug tube seals

Push rod cover gaskets

Push rod cover grommets

Water outlet gasket

Thermostat housing gasket

Distributor mounting gasket

TBI mounting gasket

Throttle body mounting gasket

Fuel injector seals

Air bypass gasket

Air pump gaskets

EGR valve gaskets

The single part number makes part lookup fast and easy. (Jobbers should look for the “HIS” prefix on part numbers when ordering.)

The Complete SolutionFel-Pro® Full Sets are available primarily for older vehicles. They provide every gasket necessary for upper and lower engine work, usually a total engine overhaul. The proliferation of engine types in late-model vehicles has made it generally impractical for jobbers to stock Full Sets for each type. Stocking Full Sets for each would require more shelf space than most jobbers have available.

Fel-Pro has solved this problem by offering Head Sets for the upper engine work and Conversion Sets for lower engine work. Combined, these two sets constitute a Full Set. Combining the two sets provides the technician with all of the gaskets he needs, while alleviating an inventory issue for the jobber by giving him flexible options for fulfilling his customers’ sealing needs.

Fel-Pro Full Sets have everything needed, including the premium materials, for a complete engine rebuild.

Full Sets (FS)

Coverage without the costFel-Pro® Conversion Sets provide every gasket necessary for lower engine work. And like all Fel-Pro Gasket Sets, they always includes the latest in premium problem-solving technologies; no upgrade is necessary.

These sets also allow Head Sets to do double duty since a Head Set, when combined with a Conversion Set, can be used for a complete overhaul or as a Full Set. This option is important to the jobber since it provides good coverage for today’s wide range of late-model engine configurations while lowering inventory costs by requiring fewer part numbers to be stocked.

An Important Factor in Controlling EmissionsValve stem seals control the lubrication of the valve stem as it slides in the valve guide. Too little oil causes stem and guide wear. Too much oil increases oil consumption and can cause a buildup of carbon, leading to valve seat damage and an early valve grind. Faulty valve stem seals increase oil consumption.

Increasingly stringent emissions regulations make it imperative that oil not enter the combustion chamber. These regulations, combined with today’s engines running hotter and valves opening and closing as often as 100,000 times an hour, make it necessary for valve stem seals to be made of the highest quality materials and latest technology to ensure a long-lasting seal. This has lead to a reduction in the need for valve stem seal replacement. Nowadays this job is usually performed only when an engine head is being serviced.

Seal DesignsThere are two basic valve stem seal designs: deflector (umbrella) seals and positive seals.

Positive seals attach to the valve guide boss. They work like a squeegee, wiping and metering oil on the stem as it posses through the seal.

Deflector seals, like the name implies, deflect oil away from the valve stem. Also called umbrella seals, they move with the valve stem to shield the valve guide from excess oil.

Material ChoicesValve stem seals are made from a variety of materials, including nylon, PTFE rubber, steel and synthetic rubber. Sometimes these materials are combined into a single sophisticated design.

When synthetic rubber is used, there are three basic types: nitrile, polyacrylate and Viton.® The biggest difference between the three types of synthetic rubber seals is their heat resistance. A synthetic rubber seal with insufficient heat resistance will harden and crack prematurely. This can lead to seal degradation, with pieces of the seal breaking away and clogging the oiling system and oil pickup screen, causing engine damage from loss of lubrication. Because of this, many Fel-Pro® valve stem seals for late model cars are made of Viton. Viton is the best material currently available for use in many of today’s hotter-running engines, particularly the smaller domestic and imported models. It is often combined with a “metal jacket” or covering that totally surrounds the Viton positive seal. Viton offers excellent resistance to both heat (up to 450° F) and abrasion, and is the chosen material for most Fel-Pro valve stem seals.

Fel-Pro® offers the complete setFel-Pro® packages valve stem seals in complete sets. Competitors offer valve stem seals individually, which can be impractical. Fel-Pro Valve Stem Seal Sets give technicians everything they need to perform a proper intake and exhaust valve job on any given engine.

Viton is a registered trademark of the E.I. DuPont Company.

Understanding Torque-to-Yield Head BoltsAlthough Torque-to-Yield (T-T-Y) head bolts are becoming more common, some people still don’t fully understand how they work.

Bolts on T-T-Y applications are tightened to their yield point, creating a more even clamping force over the entire area of the gasket.

During engine assembly at the factory, precision machines tighten the bolts so they are just in the “yield zone.” Technicians making repairs in the field do not have access to this type of equipment. Engineers have found that by tightening head bolts to specified torque and then tightening them an additional partial turn, technicians can reach the yield zone.

Fel-Pro® engineers suggest technicians use a gauge such as the affordable Fel-Pro Torque-to-Angle Indicator (part number TRQ-1). It fits easily on the 1/2” drive of a torque wrench and eliminates uncertainty about the additional torquing required for T-T-Y head bolts.

NOTE: There is no way to visually tell if a bolt is the Torque-To-Yield design – the only way to tell is by its torque specifications.

Are T-T-Y Head Bolts Reusable? The torque-to-yield procedure stretches the bolts into their elastic range. On some engines, this stretching approaches the bolts’ elastic limit and the bolts are permanently stretched. If these bolts are removed and reused, it is likely that either the head gasket will fail due to false torque readings or that the bolts may break. Each engine manufacturer offers guidelines as to whether torque-to-yield head bolts are reusable. Some guidelines allow limited reuse, while others recommend you never reuse the bolts. Since technicians may not know how many times a T-T-Y bolt has been removed and reinstalled, we recommend never reusing a T-T-Y head bolt.

T-T-Y Head Bolt Info in the CatalogThe Fel-Pro catalog offers replacement head bolts for many T-T-Y applications. When available, the head bolt set number will be listed right below the Cylinder Head Gasket and Head Set numbers.
