Industrial Technologies and Design

Certificate I Construction(Year 11)

Construction students were recentlytasked with completing a concreteblock retaining wall outside science. The build process required students toprepare the work area for safeworking, setting out with string lines, mixing and applying mortar, usingstorey rods and spirit levels to check

for consistent heights and level. They worked in small teams tolay the individual blocks while others mixed mortar or kept thesite clean. Each block was then core filled with concrete forstability and strength.

The capping of the wall was completed by students fixingformwork to the top block and pouring concrete into the form. They then used a timber float and screed to smooth and levelthe surface to get the desired finish. Lastly, an edging tool wasused to apply a rounded edge to the capping.

The students have learnt valuable practical skills in all facets ofconstruction, including site visits to the current building worksand presentations by the onsite builders, resulting in clarificationof choices being made for potential careers.

Year 10 Preparatory Graphics

Students in preparatory graphics have been undertaking anIkea flat-pack furniture project this term. Within the subject, students have developed an understanding of industrypractices, interpreted technical information and drawings, demonstrated and applied practical modelling procedures, organised and produced technical drawings and evaluateddrawings using specifications.

Information Technology

Senior IT subjects

There are two options for informationtechnology subjects in the seniorschool. Digital solutions is our offeringfor a general subject while ICT(information communicationtechnology) is our applied subject. There is no doubt that there is highdemand for people to work in the ITsector and these subjects offer a great

steppingstone into the field. However, these subjects alsoprovide valuable skills for students considering a wide range offields. They develop the 21st century skills of critical andcreative thinking, communication, collaboration and teamwork, personal and social skills, and ICT skills that are critical tostudentsā€™ success in further education and life. These subjectsare well worth a look to support any career path students maybe considering.

Laptop charging

Lately there has been a noticeable increase in the numberof students borrowing a laptop because their battery has runout. Often this is during the first lesson or earlier. We ask thatlaptops be fully charged when they get to school. Studentsshould have their laptops turned off until they get to school.Turning on the laptop at school and logging on while on theschool network will ensure all services (such as printers) areproperly connected. Laptops can also be turned off at eachbreak, which will also preserve battery life.

The Arts

Art in ā€˜Isoā€™

All the visual art classes coped verywell during our time in online learningand produced some impressive work. The Year 9 Unit - Series and Multipleslent itself well to the situation we wereall faced with. The varied tasks allowedus to move from photography todrawing and find subject matter, literally in the studentā€™s own backyard.

This is sometimes what art is about ā€“ changing peopleā€™sviewpoints and perception of what they see around them everyday. Some of the photographic tasks focussed on importantaspects of photography like the rule of thirds and depth of field.Students were also challenged to respond conceptually orthematically to other artworks and to go on a photographicscavenger hunt using themes such as isolation, joy, repetition, motion, reflections, shadows, the inside of something.

Please enjoy some of their thoughtful and creativePlease enjoy some of their thoughtful and creativephotographic artwork.photographic artwork.

Head of Year News

Year 7 and Year 8We were delighted to welcome back our Year 7 and 8 studentsand begin Term 3. Last term was a challenging term for all andwe were very proud of the way that the students used theircharacter strengths to thrive during and after online learning. Atthe end of the term, our students enjoyed the prefectsā€™ picnicwhere they were able to enjoy an extended lunchtime to baskin the sun, participate in a range of activities and to celebratesurviving the difficult term.

During Term 2, students could be nominated by their SDPteacher for a Positivity Card. Being nominated by a teacherrepresents that the student is demonstrating a characterstrength in a way that is having a positive impact on themselves,

Year 9 and Year 10A big welcome back to all of our students and their familiesas we start our Term 3 journey. We hope that all our studentsenjoyed the opportunity to relax and recharge over thetwo-week break, after a term like no other. It is fantastic to seeso many smiling, enthusiastic students in their classes, and atbreak times.

The start of a new term marks the start of new timetables andsubjects for some, the start of new topics of study, the revisitingand mastery of old skills and the introduction of new skills andconcepts ā€“ it is an exciting time!

Part of that excitement comes from knowing that school isalmost back to normal, so we thought it timely to include areminder about attendance. Every minute of every day counts,as our students are always learning, every day in every lesson.Missing just 10 minutes a day may not seem like much, but overa year this adds up to nearly 1 and a half weeks of valuablelearning time. Missing 1 hour a day adds up to 8 weeks over ayear, or nearly a whole term worth of learning! Over 13 years ofschool, this is over two and half years of missed learning andopportunity for growth!

Semester reports cards will be sent home early this term. Thisis a great opportunity for students to reflect on their progress. Itis important to celebrate their successes, and discuss how theycan further take control of their learning. It is only when studentstake time to reflect that they can be the best they can be.

Year 9 ā€“ Student Development Program (SDP)

At Mansfield SHS, all year levels draw on the pillars of PositiveEducation for their Student Development Program. We havestarted the term exploring the Positive Education theme ofMeaning.

This week in SDP students completed the VIA CharacterStrengths Survey to identify their strongest character strength.Interestingly, a number of classes found that humour andgratitude were collectively their strongest character strengths. There were many lively discussions in classes as studentsidentified which friends had the top character strengths asthem, and how their character strengths have changed overtime. These discussions will develop over the term as studentscontinue to examine the world around them and how they candisplay their character strengths every day to show the worldtheir best selves. Student will continue to understand how theyare influenced by, and can influence, the community aroundthem as they reflect on their signature character strengths.

Year 10 ā€“ SET Planning

Year 10 students will be participating in their SET Planinterviews this term. These interviews have been adapted tomeet current COVID-19 safety guidelines.

There will be three interview sessions during week 5 of theterm to allow for our large cohort. Interviews are 15 minutes induration and conducted with a staff member, the student and aparent/caregiver.

These interview sessions are as detailed below:

ā€¢ Session 1 ā€“ Wednesday 12 August : 2 pm to 6 pm.

Year 11 and Year 12We hope you have had an opportunity to rest and enjoyprecious time with your friends and family this holiday. As youreturn to classes and receive results, remember that they areanother stepping-stone for the amazing journey ahead of you, they are not the end of your journey! What can you learn fromthe stones that you have thrown? Do you need to take morerisks to help you learn and grow further? What was the oneminor change you learned from your reflections of last term? How can you add value to it?

This term will be all about helping you thrive; the importantlesson you need to know is that your thriving involves us allā€“ your teachers, parents, friends, and classmates. Do not behesitant to reach out. The reality is that we learn together, wegrow together and consequently, we will thrive together! We allcontribute something of value to the table.

Remember to be curious. Take some time at the start of thisterm to think about how you can use an area of strength tosupport an area of growth?

What is your area of strength? Talking in class? Perhaps youcould use this ability to communicate and support your journeyby talking to your teacher and asking questions; use your loveof staying connected to explore an area of interest in moredepth.

We encourage you to try something new. Change what youhave always done. Permit yourself to be curious. Take a risk tohelp you learn and grow. Embrace the journey and thrive!

Have a great start to the term!

The end of Term 2 picnic celebration

Congratulations to our prefects for organising a wonderfulpicnic to celebrate the end of Semester One. Walking aroundthe grounds on the last day was a wonderful experience.
