Students will investigate real-life examples to develop various representations of linear relations, and will determine the connections between the representations. They will also explore certain relationships that emerge from the measurement of three-dimensional figures and two- dimensional shapes. Students will consolidate their mathematical skills as they solve problems and communicate their thinking. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course enables students to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts related to introductory algebra, proportional reasoning, and measurement and geometry through investigation, the effective use of technology, and hands-on activities. Students will investigate real-life examples to develop various representations of linear relations, and will determine the connections between the representations. They will also explore certain relationships that emerge from the measurement of three-dimensional figures and two-dimensional shapes. Students will consolidate their mathematical skills as they solve problems and communicate their thinking.

AREAS OF STUDYNumber Sense & Algebra

solve problems involving proportional reasoning simplify numerical and polynomial expressions in one variable, and solve simple first-degree equations

Linear Relations apply data-management techniques to investigate relationships between two variables determine the characteristics of linear relations demonstrate an understanding of constant rate of change and its connection to linear relations connect various representations of a linear relation, and solve problems using the representations

Measurement and Geometry

determine, through investigation, the optimal values of various measurements of rectangles solve problems involving the measurements of two-dimensional shapes and the volumes of three-dimensional shapes determine, through investigation facilitated by dynamic geometry software, geometric properties and relationships involving two-dimensional shapes, and apply the results to solving problems

UNITS OF STUDY

Unit 1: Measurement (Chapter 1) Unit 2: Optimization (Chapter 2)Unit 3: Polynomials (Chapter 7) Unit 4: Solving Equations (Chapter 7 & handouts) Unit 5: Investigating Relationships (Chapter 5) Unit 6: Proportional Reasoning (Chapter 4)Unit 7: Linear Relations (Chapter 6) Unit 8: Relationships in Geometry (Chapter 3)

COURSE EXPECTATIONS1. All students are required to bring the following materials to class everyday:

Assigned textbook Pencil with eraser and a ruler Binder with lined paper and graph paper Completed homework Scientific calculator Please leave food, drink, and cell phones in your locker.

2. It is imperative that students take responsibility for their own learning, attend all classes, and arrive to class on time. Cell phones are a major distraction and will not be used in this class.3. Class time is to be used effectively and students are expected to focus on the task at hand.4. When absent, students are responsible for obtaining class notes and completing the required homework for the missed lesson(s). 5. Complete all homework and assignments and adhere to the due dates.6. If you have trouble with any assigned work, it is your responsibility to get extra help either during class, MSIP periods or during lunch in room 95

Respect yourself, respect others, respect the staff, and respect the school.
