Energy Energy TransferTransfer
Energy can MOVEMOVE from one place to another (like lightning)!
This is called Energy TRANSFERTRANSFER
Energy always transfers to a place that has LESSLESS energy.
Think of it like sharing: giving energyto a place that doesn’t have as much.
The ice has LESS thermal energy, so the drink TRANSFERSTRANSFERS energy to the ice, causing it to melt!
There are 3 ways to TRANSFERTRANSFER energy:
1) Conduction = energy transferred by touching
The fork will conduct electricity when it touches the outlet.
2) Radiation = energy transferred without touching
The fire’s thermal energy is radiatingout to warm the room
3) Convection = energy transferred when heat rises, then cools in a circular motion.
Can You Identify Can You Identify the the
Energy Transfer?Energy Transfer?
Decide if each example showsDecide if each example showsconduction, radiation, or convection.conduction, radiation, or convection.
You can burn your hand from puttinga metal stick in the candle flame.
Conduction because you wereactually touching it.
Getting an X-ray
Radiation, because it doesn’t touch you
It is hotter in your attic and upstairsthan it is downstairs.
Convection because the heat is rising, while the cool falls.
Lightning burning a tree
Conduction because it touches the tree
Getting cooked from the inside out by an atomic bomb
Radiation because you aren’t touching the bomb
Water boiling in a pot
Convection because the heat risesand cools in a circular motion.
Cooking in the microwave
Radiation because nothing actuallytouches your food.
Static shock from a doorknob
Conduction because you had to touch the doorknob
Toasting (not burning) a marshmellow
Radiation because no touching
Lava lamp bubbling
Convection, because the heat ofthe lightbulb makes the bubbles rise and fall in a circle.
