Energy ReviewWhat do you know?

Do NowStatement: The farther above the ground an object, such as a book, is raised, the greater the object’s Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE).

Pick the statement below which most closely matches your thinking and then explain your thinking process.

•Yes, everything has some potential energy.

•Yes, but it only gets potential energy when it falls.

•Yes, because gravity is stronger the higher you go up.

•Yes, one thing that determines the GPE is the distance between the object and the ground.

•No, there is no force or motion happening.

•No, it is not in contact with anything which could give it

energy.

Essential Question•What are the different types of energy and why are they so important to us?

You will be able to:•Describe the different types of energy.•Explain how the different types move

throughout a system.•Compare practical examples to their

appropriate energy type.

Prepare for the Activity

•Work in pairs.

Discussion Notes

• Energy is defined by the CHANGE that is caused when energy changes form or moves from one object to another object.

• Where does the energy come from that powers this iPod?• Mechanical Energy

• Refers to the sum ofGravitational Potentialand Kinetic Energy.

Discussion Notes (cont.)

• Chemical Potential Energy (CPE) - the energy of bonds.

• Chemical potential energy, sometimes just called chemical energy, is the energy stored in the bonds that hold the particles in a substance together.

• Heat Energy (HE) - the random kinetic energy of particles.

• Thermal energy is another term often used as a synonym for heat energy.

Discussion Notes (cont.)

• Sound Energy - the energy of vibrating particles.

• Particles vibrate, but stay in the same spot.

• Electromagnetic Energy - the energy of waves.

• This form of energy is often referred to as solar energy and light energy as well.

• The most common form of electromagnetic energy is light.

Discussion Notes (cont.)

• Law of Conservation of Energy- Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. Energy can be transferred from one object to another and can be transformed

• from one form to another,

• but the total amount of

• energy never changes.

• Elastic Potential Energy (EPE) - energy of deformed materials.

• This form of energy comes from the stretching or compressing

of elastic materials.

Discussion Notes (cont.)

• Energy Transformation• the changing of

energy from one form of energy to another form of energy.

• Energy Transfer• the passing of

energy from one object to another object.

Wrap Up

What are the types of energy and why are they so important to us? •There are many types of energy.•They interact in many different ways and are used in many different ways.•No matter how they are transformed or transferred, the total amount remains the same (Law of Conservation of Energy).
