Conventional electric power plants

They produce most of the energy that we use.

Types:● Nuclear power plants.● Fossil fuel thermal power plants.● Hydroelectric power plants.

Nuclear power plants

●They break down the fuel and it produces large amounts of heat this heat is used to produce a high pressure stream that moves the turbines, this turbines are connected to a generator that produces electricity.●Main fuel: Uranium.● Advantages:high return on their energy

production.

Fossil fuel thermal power plants

● In this type of power plants the water is heated to its boiling point. It generates steam and this steam is used to move the turbine that is connected to the generator.

● They usually burn coal but now is increasingly burning natural gasd because it produces the least pollution.

Combined cycle power plants

● This type of power plants generates electrycity as a result of combinining two cycles, a cycle that uses air and gas and a conventional thermal cycle

● First the gas is mixed with the air and its burnt. It generates electricity. Hot gases are transported to the recovery boiler where they transfer their energy to the water in the second cycle.

Hydroelectric power plants

● It uses the force of water that is stored in a dam. The water moves a turbine and produces kinetic energy and then this energy is transformed into electricity

● There are two types of hydraulic energy depending on the destination of the water: gravity or pump.

Non-conventional electric power plants● Advantages:They contaminate less than

conventional power plants,they use renewable sources and reduce the energy dependence.

● Disadvantages:they generate much less energy

Wind power plants and wind farms● They use the movement of the wind,to move

blades which generate electricity thanks to a transformation center at the bottom of the tower where the blades are.

● Wind farms can only be installed in places with good wind conditions

● A wind power plant produces between 1MW and 10MW

Solar power plants

● Photo-thermal power plants

● The heat generated by the solar radiations produces stream which moves a rotor conected to a generator.

● Photovoltaic power plants

● The solar radiations are transform directly into electricity by photovoltaic panels.

● The isolated power p● lants are smaller.

● They use the energy from the sun to produce electricity

Geothermal power plants.

● They use the heats found at the deep of the Earth to produce energy.

● These energy cn be used:

● Directly:hot water,heating and industrial uses.

● Indirectly:the heat generates stream which produce electricity

Biomass thermal power plants.● Energy is produced

by burning organic wastes,the steam from the burning moves a turbine conected to a generator.

● These power plants use the force of waves and tides to produce energy.

● They are in a experimental fase so they don't produce too much energy.

From wind to water Eole water,the French research companyhas created a new

air rotor which can convert the whater steam in the air into drinking water.

The air enters into the turbine and goes into an electric cooling compressor which condense the water in the air.

One turbine can produce up to

1,000 liters of water every day
