• The envisaged growthrate of economy is 9%.
• India is 7th largest energyproducer and 5th largestenergy consumer inworld.
• Estimated average peakshortage is 12% in 2006-07.
Projected Energy requirement, 2030
• The projected requirement of coal has been estimatedassuming its calorie content to be 4000 kcal per kg and2865 kcal per kg for lignite.

Way Forward
• India is short of all energy resources. Need to expand resourcesthrough exploration, energy efficiency, renewables and R&D.
• Additional sources of energy like CBM must be fully exploited.Renewable energy sources contribution should be increased.
• More transparent policy framework that treats the different energysources in similar manner.
• Institutions promoting energy conservation and improvement needto be strengthened.
• Subsidies and support need to be linked to outcome of renewableenergy instead of capital investment.
• Development of robust energy R&D systems.

Development of alternative Fuels
• CBM-Coal Bed Methane – 26 blocks already been offered inbidding.
• Gas Hydrates – National GH Programme started in 1997.Seismic surveys conducted in KG & Mahanadi basin.Potential areas are Kerala & Konkan basin.
• UCG-Underground Coal Gasification – ONGC & GAILengaged for exploration.
• CTL-Coal To Liquid – Two blocks allocated to Tata & Jindal.• Bio fuels – Planned for 5% increase of ethanol in Bio-diesel
blended fuel.• Oil Shale – Identified in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh &
Nagaland estimated about 100 Billion barrels.
