Problem Statement Pakistan is passing through one of the

most worst energy crises in its history.

Pakistan is facing a short fall of approx.6000 MW .[14]

Electricity remains off for approx. 18hours in rural areas and approx. 12 hoursfor urban areas.

Problem Statement Textile industry is taken as a case study. Pakistan,4 th largest producer of cotton with 3 rd

largest spinning capacity in Asia & 8th

largestexporter of textile products in Asia,Contributes 5% of the global spinning capacity

It contributes 9.5% of the GDP. At present there are 1221 ginning units, 442

spinning, 124 large spinning & 425 small unitslike loams, Providing employment to 15 millionor roughly 30% of the 49 million workforce of the country

There is a gap between demand and supply. The gap can be reduced by installing

additional power generating capacity. Large generation capacity projects take time. Therefore it is economically better to reduce

energy loss and waste than increasing costs ingeneration and transmission systems anddoing energy conservation measures.[5]

IntroductionWhat Is An Energy Audit (EA)?

An energy audit is an inspection, survey and analysisof energy flows for energy conservation in a building, process or system to reduce the amount of energyinput into the system without negatively affecting theoutput(s)

OR in simple words it is a Systematic approach tomonitor industrial energy consumption and to pinpoint sources of wastage is called energy audit.[8]

    Why Energy Auditing?

Energy Management has been the important tool tomeet its objectives for short term survival & long termsuccess[2].Energy Audit helps an organization to understand &analyze its energy utilization, To budget energy use plan& practice feasible conservation plans to enhanceefficiency, curtail energy wastage & substantially reduceenergy costs.[11,12]

WHY WE ARE USING ENERGY AUDIT?

Energy audit includes following actions, steps and processes:

Conducting in depth energy audit by systematic process of accounting and reconciliation between the following:

    Actual energy consumption

Calculated energy consumption taking into account ratedefficiency and power losses in all energy utilizing equipment andpower transmission system i.e. conductor, cable, panels etc.

    Why Energy Auditing?

Energy Efficiency in Industry has become importantissue in the century consider cost of energy, Energycrises in the world and environmental issues of usingenergy sources.[7]Process industries such as petrochemical,Pharmaceutical and semiconductor industries haveshown that by doing minor alterations in the designstage and the operations of process industries, a bigimpact can be achieved in the bottom line of concerned companys performance.[9]

    Why EA?

The optimum utilization of energy leads us to themanagement of load, which is defined as the set of objectives designed to control and modify the patternsof demands of various consumers of power utility.[10]Reduces the specific energy consumption & operatingcosts (approximately by 20% to 30%) by systematic

analysis.[13]EA has become an effective tool in defining &

pursuing a comprehensive energy management program.[15][16][17]

Methodology for Energy AuditDifferent methodologies arefollowed by differentorganizations for energy audit.Suggested methodologies forinstallations having similar anddissimilar equipments are asfollows :

    Study & verification of energyconsumption..

Study of opportunities forsaving in energy..

Checking operating point &best efficiency point..

    Checking for penalties levied byauthority..

Routine MeasuresThe measures can be routinely adopted in

day to day operation and maintenancePeriodical Measures

By adopting these measures in a specific period, efficiency can be nearly restored

1 Energy conservation should be a priority for everyone nowadays.

    2

For large organizations, electrical energy savings are even more

relevant because their bills are bigger and their usage is greater.

    3

Finding ways to deal smartly with facilities and householdequipments will have a great impact in industries and domesticusage.

4 The effect of AI methods will soon become clear in the area of

energy conservation as they become commercial products.
