U.S.-‐India State and Urban Ini/a/ve
Purpose: To expand U.S.-‐India energy coopera4on by strengthening direct engagement with India’s powerful states.
• promo.ng energy security and energy sector reform through direct engagement between U.S. and Indian subna.onal en..es; • by establishing close, sustainable working rela.onships between Indian subna.onal officials, their U.S. counterparts, research ins.tu.ons, civil society organiza.ons working in the areas of governance and renewable energy, and the private sector.
India’s Key Power Projects 24 x 7 “Power for All” Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana
(UDAY)
175 GW of Renewable Energy by 2022
Objec&ve: to supply 24x7 “quality, reliable and affordable power to all domes.c, commercial and industrial consumers by 2019.” Ac.ons taken under the ini.a.ve include:
Objec&ve: to improve the financial health of state distribu.on companies (DISCOMs) through four ini.a.ves:
Objec&ve: The BJP-‐led government has revised the country’s renewable energy targets and aims to install 175 GW by 2022. Distribu.on of na.onal target:
1) village electrifica.on 2) providing access to households 3) feeder separa.on 4) strengthening of sub-‐transmission
and distribu.on network and 5) roll out of meters
1) improving opera.onal efficiencies; 2) reduc.on of cost of power; 3) reduc.on in interest cost of
DISCOMs; and 4) enforcing financial discipline on
DISCOMs through alignment with State finances.
1) Solar: 100 GW 2) Wind: 60 GW 3) Biomass: 10 GW 4) Small Hydro: 5 GW
Energized Indian States CSIS surveyed senior power sector ofOicials from 13 Indian states: • Key Stakeholders:
• Secretary/Principal Secretary of Power • Secretary of New & Renewable Energy Nodal Agencies
• Chairman or Managing Director of the State Genera.on, Transmission, or Distribu.on Companies
• Regulators • Directors of Na.onal Research Ins.tu.ons
