Hidden diamonds:
Uncovering the true
value of sport
volunteers
Join In has released ground-breaking
research into the hidden value of sport
volunteers, going beyond cost to measure the
true value they create – through participation,
wellbeing, trust and community.
Going beyond traditional valuation methods
which use the cost-replacement model, they
have investigated the true value of sports
volunteering to personal wellbeing and
happiness of the volunteers themselves, plus
the wider benefit to their communities.

£2 million national
sport programme to
tackle mental health
Plans for England's first large scale programme using sport to improve the lives of 75,000 people experiencing mental health problems were today unveiled by Mind, the mental health charity, and Sport England.
When the programme is launched next year, people experiencing mental health problems - such as depression and anxiety - will be supported to join mainstream sports clubs go to the gym or take up a new sport. The ambitious project, which will be run in eight areas across England, will be designed in collaboration with people living with mental health problems and will offer peer support groups, taster sessions and events to help people make sport part of their everyday lives. Mind will deliver the project after securing £1.5 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England. People experiencing mental health problems who live in the eight areas will be able to join the sport and mental health programme through their local Mind. Sports coaches and providers will also be trained to better understand the challenges faced by people with mental health problems. View the full news item

Deaf Friendly
Swimming
Resources
We know that learning to swim is a challenge for all children and young people. This challenge is even greater for deaf children and young people due to the acoustics of a swimming pool, the natural distance between a swimmer and teacher / coach and because hearing aids and cochlear implants have to be removed in water. That's why in partnership with the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), Swim Wales, Scottish ASA, Swim Ulster and GB Deaf Swimming, the NDCS have created a resource for all involved in swimming to support them to be deaf friendly! Still want to learn more? Well you can! The NDCS, in partnership with the ASA, have created an online course, the Deaf-Friendly Swimming i-Learn. The course takes you through deafness, communication, top tips and provides lots of practical examples for you to learn how to be fully inclusive of deaf children and young people. Best of all...you can complete the course in your own time and it's completely free!

Get Healthy, Get
Active
This Sport England fund is focused on reducing the number of inactive people because this will have the greatest contribution to health inequalities. Approximately 10 projects nationwide will receive funding of between £100,000 to £500,000 for 3 years. This must be a new, multi-sport project, with partnership funding encouraged.
The aims of the fund are:
• Get more inactive people playing sport once a week for at least 30 minutes;
• Achieve a better understanding of sports contribution to improving public health and the prevention, treatment and management of long term conditions;
• Enable sport and physical activity to be regularly commissioned to meet a wider range of agendas but particularly focusing on reducing health and social care costs;
• Achieve a reduction in health inequalities
The fund is due to open from mid-late November until 26th January 2015.
A sample application form can be viewed on Sport England’s website, along with FAQs, full guidance and example projects.
Among other areas, applicants will need to demonstrate:
How the project will reduce health inequalities in your area
What evidence is there to support the project need
Deliverability of the project
Demonstration of partnerships
Sustainability of the project past funding
Research and evaluation during the project
Click here for more information
A key feature of this fund is working in partnership at a local level to deliver health and sporting outcomes therefore we would encourage any organisation wishing to apply for this fund to contact Energize for further support.
