A resident of Sunrise Assisted Living in Oakville since 2003, Hazel had a great lust for life despite a number of medical challenges in her later years. Hazel was born in Oshawa Ontario, March 25, 1917. After a short career as a surgical nurse in Oshawa, she married Douglas W. S. Best MD, her best friend and life-long companion. She and Douglas celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in 2007. An energetic and tireless volunteer and organizer, Hazel rose through the ranks of the Girl Guides of Canada, advancing to the position of District Commissioner. She was an active member at Trinity United Church and Wellington Square United Church in Burlington, St. Mark's United Church in Whitby, and the Whitby Curling Club, where she was awarded an honorary life-time membership for her many years of outstanding service. Hazel is survived by her brother Ray Trew and sisters Marion Carter and Dorita Shaw; her husband Douglas; her three children David Best (Margaret), Marion Winton (Ian) and Richard Best (Penny Smith); and five grandchildren: Christine Best, Danielle Best, Stephen Sparrow, Diane Sparrow, and Lindsey Best.
