The Dr. Thomas K. Thomas Endowed Teaching Chair Program at Illinois Central College recognizes teaching excellence. Specifically, the program looks for teachers who exhibit distinction in one or more of these areas:• Student-centered instructional philosophy• Commitment to teaching• Contribution to Illinois Central College’s mission and values• Instructional innovation• Impact on community The Endowed Teaching Chair awards a stipend of up to $3,500 or equivalent in release time. The stipend supports faculty plans to improve instruction or enhance professional development. Successful candidates also receive an engraved plaque, with a medallion, and recognition at ICC’s Annual Employee Recognition Banquet.

The Endowed Teaching Chair is made possible throughthe Educational Foundation by the support of individuals, corporations, and organizations committed to the “art and science of teaching.” The Endowed Teaching Chair is named for retired ICC President, Dr. Thomas K.Thomas.

EligibilityFull-time, tenured, and tenure-track faculty are eligible. Recipients must maintain continuous, full-time employment at ICC.

Application Process1. Candidates for the award must complete this applica- tion, including a Professional Project Development Plan. Additional applications are available through Deans, Organizational Learning, and Organizational Learning Awards webpage.

2. Applications, including the letter of recommendation, are due in Organizational Learning by end of day February 18. Submit application to Malia Heath, 694-5442, Room 340E, [email protected].

3. Recipients will be notified by April 1.

Professional or Project Development PlanApplicants will submit a Professional Project Development Plan. This plan outlines how the applicant intends to use the stipend to enhance instruction or professional development or a project related to instruction. The plan should include an overall descriptive paragraph of the project plan; goals; timeline; a basic itemized budget to include time, materials, and any special equipment; a description of the intended outcome/s and benefits of the project or plan; and a method to present the final project. (See application.)

Evaluation/RatingThe Selection Committee will score each application with equal emphasis on:• The overall application, teaching philosophy, and faculty activities/awards• Professional Project Development Plan

The Selection Committee includes five faculty members appointed by the Faculty Senate, two Deans, a representative of the Educational Foundation, an Educational Foundation Board member, and is chaired by Organizational Learning. This is the Endowed Chair and Mini-Grant Review Committee.

The Committee may ask for a brief interview with final candidates, if necessary.

ImplementationOrganizational Learning will administer the Professional Project Development Plan. Reimbursement will be authorized through the Dean of the faculty member’s department according to current procedures. Changes to the Professional Project Development Plan must be submitted to Organizational Learning in writing in advance of any commitment for reimbursement. At the completion of the plan, the recipient must submit a report to Organizational Learning. The timeline for completion of the plan or project is July 1 of the following academic year. The recipient also may be invited to share the results of his/her Professional Project Development Plan with the Educational Foundation Board, the College Board of Trustees, and possibly other groups.
