The first thing you will have noticed about this edition is that we have given you a handy travel-sized magazine, small enough to travel with you so you can enjoy a read over lunch, or even by the pool.

In what is something of a saints’ and sinners’ edition, on page 60 our wine expert recommends places where sunshine and fine wines blend to create a heady cocktail of a holiday. Then head off for a relaxing detox in one of four fabulous world-class spa resorts we have selected for you, including Finland and Mexico on page 45.

On page 16 we feature a family favourite – chilling on the golden sands along the meandering coastline of southern Spain. We have rounded up naturally pretty and secluded beaches, some made to party on, and everything in between.

Congratulations to our winners, Jose Ribeiro and Maria Simoes, who received an early Christmas gift with an Apple iPad Air in the December Deposit Prize Draw.

F or decades we have been packing our best holiday outfits, lashings of sunscreen and the latest

bestseller to journey to Spain’s sun-drenched shores. It was the original package holiday darling and our love affair with the Spanish Costas has lost none of its fervour as the years have passed.

For a little over 1,000 miles, the southern coastline of Spain meanders along in a great lopsided smile, occasionally reaching out for the tender embrace of the Mediterranean or darting inwards to visit a city. It hides secret coves, helps forests take root, provides shelter for working fishermen and offers up flowing ribbons of beach to greet those seeking the tried-and-tested mix of sun, sea and sand.

From beaches created solely by Mother Nature, family favourites (buckets and spades optional) and chic coastal hotspots, to hidden sands on which to escape the crowds, we have rounded up some of the best beaches on the Costa Blanca, as well as those around the cities of Málaga and Tarragona.

Public transport is excellent, though hiring a car will make it even easier to reach some of the coast’s best beaches. Car hire in Spain can be very cheap and the road network is easy to navigate.

COSTA BLANCABenidorm is one of the largest of the sandy playgrounds on this central stretch of coast, but the Costa Blanca’s less-known northern region is well worth a visit. Wildly rugged, this is a place where mountains, not just hotels, reach for the skies. The harbour town of Denia is all at once traditional and cosmopolitan, while around it village after village oozes Spanish charm and hospitality. Moraira, Javea and Albir boast long and pristine beaches, boulevards lined with palm trees and cafés, and just the right balance of entertainment for the evenings.

Here are some of the hottest spots when the time arrives to lay down your towel on the Costa Blanca.

For natureWith the stunning peaks of the Mount Montgo Natural Park at the rear and a dazzling palette of blues on the watery horizon, Les Rotes Beach in Denia is spectacular. Five bays make up the length of Les Rotes, so enjoy some beach hopping to discover your favourite spot. La Marineta Casiana is the sandy bay near the harbour, though it’s the rocky terrain and crystalline waters of the other bays that really tip the nature scale.

For the familyWhen it comes to family-friendly beaches on the Costa Blanca, Benidorm’s Playa Levante easily steals the crown. This generous helping of south-facing seaside splendour is sheltered by the high-rise buildings of Benidorm and kissed by the sun from morning to dusk. Many local buses drop off and pick up near this safe EU Blue-Flag beach, so you can access it from nearby towns and resorts with ease. If the children grow tired of splashing in the shallows and building sand castles, Aqualandia Water Park is just minutes away by road and suitable for all ages. It opens between May and September.

For an escapeOne of the many great things about the Costa Blanca is the sheer variety of experiences on offer. When you are ready to get away from the excitement of Benidorm, the journey to Albir takes just 10 minutes by road. This modern and sophisticated resort features a long stretch of pebbly shoreline and magnificent views to the Natural Park of Penyal d’Ifach, which lies further north. It can get busy in places, though there are plenty of areas along this 600-metre beach where the only sound will be your voice, the turning of a page, and the gentle whoosh of the sea folding over the shore.

For chic surroundingsPlaya de San Juan is located north of the city of Alicante and its pillow-soft white sands spread over more than four miles. There are areas dedicated

to water sports and plenty of hushed spots in the shade of a beach-planted palm… There is even a golf club just minutes from the sand in the resort of San Juan de Alicante.

At the southern end of the beach, a traffic-free promenade is furnished with tables and chairs, which are served by a platter of tempting eateries. Whether you are hungry for a long sun-soaked lunch or just fancy tapas and a cocktail, the views are hard to resist.

The best of the restLa Granadella beach, near Javea and Denia, is the stuff of postcards. Underfoot, shingles of pure white clink as you make your way to the seashore, flanked by pine-clad cliffs, to snorkel above seagrass beds that teem with life. South of Alicante, near the wetlands of Santa Pola, is a beach known as El Carabassi. It doesn’t dazzle like some of its coastal neighbours, but the greenery-topped sand dunes offer plenty of resting places away from the crowds. Arenal-Bol in Calpe, which stands in the shadow of the vast Penyal d’Ifach rock, is also worth a visit.

beyond the city boundaries and runs almost parallel to the famous Costa del Sol. The province goes deep into the mountainous terrain of Spain’s south, though you don’t have to travel far to venture into traditional mountain life. Take enchanting Mijas, which can be reached in less than an hour from Málaga city centre by car or bus. Like a smear of icing on an otherwise emerald landscape, Mijas will put the brakes on your break and show you a slower Spain.

The beaches of Málaga and the Costa del Sol are some of the best in the country. Here are just a few of the finest.

For natureMaking your holiday base in a vibrant town such as Benalmadena or Fuengirola does not mean that your beach options are limited to the urban variety. Take a look between the two and you’ll discover beaches such as Tajo de la Soga, where dark sands and tree-dotted cliffs add a dash of natural beauty. There are sun beds and parasols available and the beach is monitored and cleaned, but you are likely to feel far removed from the bustling sands closer to town. Buses serve the area and there’s a car park if you plan to drive.

The best of the restThe birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the city of Málaga is a great spot in which to absorb Spain’s ferocious appetite for art, culture, and food. Beach life is also important for these city folk, and you can join them on sublime stretches of urban sand such as Playa de la Malagueta. La Misericordia beach is a little further from the city streets and therefore quieter. You will need to hop in the car or board a bus to reach Rincon de la Victoria, but don’t let that put you off – the beach is flat, sandy and often less crowded. The beaches of Torremolinos, just 20 minutes to the south of Málaga, are also something to write home about.

TARRAGONA A rich and varied tapestry of the past decorates the streets of sunny Tarragona, which is on the north-eastern stretch of Spain’s Mediterranean coastline and just an hour outside Barcelona. Peek over the top of the Roman amphitheatre, from the upper steps of this centuries-old arena, and there can be no doubt of Tarragona’s credentials as a seaside city. The Med glitters, inviting sun-drenched swimmers into its warm waters from the shore’s golden sands.

Tarragona is located on the Costa Dorada. Staying in the city is an appealing option, though the nearby resorts of Salou and Cambrils lure holidaymakers with miles of beaches, theme parks, family-friendly eateries,

and a more relaxing vibe than the busier resorts of the south.

Spain’s most popular theme park, PortAventura, is located between Salou and Tarragona (it takes around 10 minutes to reach the park from either direction) and family members of all ages are sure to share lots of exciting times in this fun-filled pleasure park.

Many visitors also swerve the temptations of the city and head for destinations in the province of Castellón – including the historic towns of Morella, Onda, Vilafames, and Peñiscola – which is around two hours to the south of Tarragona.

For natureThe Ebro Delta Nature Reserve (Delta de l’Ebre) is an important area of wetland, known for both its immense size and the unique landscape that attracts hundreds of bird species. Birds are not the only sun worshippers who flock to the Ebro Delta, as the area’s beaches are something to behold. The flatness of the landscape creates skies larger than you can imagine, though lighthouses, sand dunes, friendly villages and flamingo-filled lakes are scattered across the horizon. Having a hire car will make it much easier to reach this distinctive but remote corner of natural Spain. Riumar and La Marquesa are popular beaches here.

For the familyFamilies adore Levante Beach in Salou. The sands are fine and clean, while the waters are shallow and perfect for paddlers of all ages. There is a wealth of facilities close by, which families really appreciate, and prices at the seafront cafés and restaurants are reasonable.

For an escapeIt’s hard to believe that a quiet strip of sand exists between the city of Tarragona and the bustling family resort of Salou, which is 15 minutes along the coast. Exist it does. Take a bow Cala Penya Tallada.

This diminutive pine-scented cove on Cap Salou appears to have been carved straight out of the cliff face and, though it’s not hard to reach, it isn’t well known to tourists. Walking access is from Carrer de la Penya Tallada (a small sign points the way to the shore). It’s a small beach, but the sands are golden, the waters calm, and the vibe is hushed and peaceful.

For chic surroundingsLike the St Tropez of Spain, the town of Sitges exudes charm and style. It is well known for its cultural calendar (including a famous film festival) and Sitges is impossible to resist once you’ve had a taste. Overlooking the central beaches is a whitewashed church. Platja de La Fragata offers the best views of this imposing structure, though any of the 17 beaches in

Sitges are worth a visit. The shops and restaurants of this pleasant town offer a cool break away from the water’s edge.

The best of the restPlatja del Miracle is the main beach in the city of Tarragona. Close to the railway station and a handful of attractions, it’s a busy and noisy beach but the urban buzz is uniquely exciting. To turn down the volume on your beach experience, drive or take the bus to Tamarit, which can be reached in less than 20 minutes. TIME TO LIVETRACIE BUSHELL is a woman who lives life to the full. She works hard and plays hard, which is why she learned how to use her RCI membership to get the most for her family out of timeshare ownership.

Now an RCI Platinum member, Tracie Bushell has been holidaying with RCI since 1996 when she bought a week at

Holiday Inn Orange Lake – West Village (0670) in Orlando, Florida. As Tracie explained to Endless Vacation, using her RCI membership she has tailored her holidays to suit the changing holiday needs of herself and her family throughout the years, ensuring

that her holidays ticked everyone’s boxes.

Fun in FloridaIt was an attempted mugging at her Florida hotel which led Tracie to buy a timeshare. On her first ever US holiday with daughter Shellie, who was just seven years old and excited to be visiting Disneyland, the incident happened in front of her hotel in the first days of her holiday. Shellie was with her…


“It was really very frightening for us both,” said Tracie.

“The next day I had tickets for a tour at Orange Lake and I told the guy showing us round about the incident. Within the hour he arranged to move us into Orange Lake for the rest of our holiday at no cost.”

Tracie never looked back. She loved the spacious accommodation, the privacy it afforded a family and much more.

“That first stay at Orange Lake really opened my eyes to how I could be holidaying.

“After the hotel, the accommodation seemed amazingly luxurious and I really enjoyed the feeling of security being on resort gave me,” she explained.

Tracie and Shellie returned many times to Orange Lake where Tracie valued the home comforts and Shellie loved the activities. “Those early years were all about Shellie.

She absolutely loved Disney and the rides, visiting SeaWorld and Universal Studios. While on resort the swimming pools and space in the grounds to run around in were a real thrill for her. For me, I was happy to kick off my shoes and enjoy the freedom to relax that you just don’t get in hotels. I can’t do hotels for my holidays now – I find them far too claustrophobic and only tolerate them on business trips because I have to!”

ChangesAs a Procurement and Contracts Manager for schools, Tracie from Ruislip in West London, has an exceptionally full work schedule which is why her time away from work is so important to her. Since buying her timeshare she has enjoyed a variety of holidays – and gone on many more of them than if she’d had to book on the high street.

“Because I own a unit that sleeps eight at an RCI Gold Crown resort in the US, I can trade my week’s deposit for as many as three weeks of holiday in Europe. When I got tired of going back to Florida and Shellie had outgrown Disney, travel in Europe was my next big adventure,” said Tracie.

The Balearics and Canary Islands have become favourite holiday destinations

for Tracie, who now takes her 72-year-old mother, Joan, herself still a working woman, on holiday with her. “Ibiza was a pleasant surprise. You hear things about the partying… But Mum and I found it to be a truly beautiful island and really easy to drive around – I always hire a car. We stayed at Ses Fontanellas Plaza (2836) and enjoyed our balcony overlooking the sea. Out of resort, we spent our time scrambling over the rocks and as nobody else was quite that mad, we never met a soul. It was very relaxing,” said Tracie.

“Ibiza was compact, the Hippy Market at Punta Arabi was amazing and way beyond what I expected. The Blue Marlin restaurant by the marina with its exclusive beach was also remembered for a very special lunch. We have been back to Ibiza three times and live as the locals do. It works for me.”

Tracie and Joan have also returned several times to Gran Canaria: “Puerto de Mogán (Port Morgan) is like little Venice – we could sit by the marina and watch the world go by forever, while the walk along the seafront to catch a boat to go dolphin watching is a great way to spend an afternoon.”

But Tenerife has a special place in their holiday hearts. “We have been back to

Tenerife more times than I can count. We absolutely love The Regency Country Club Tenerife (5289). The pool, the accommodation and guest areas are all amazing. We enjoy such a personal service at the Regency. The staff always remember us and you can see they really do enjoy being there with you, in fact I consider them to be like family.”

When Tracie can’t exchange into Regency, The Villas at Chayofa Country Club (6813) is her next option. “The villas at this resort are superb, so pretty and spacious.” she said. Tracie and Joan spend much time on holiday walking, having combed every inch of Tenerife during their visits. “We eat in the local residential areas where the Spanish eat, we drive up the dirt tracks of Teide, pull over, take a walk and listen – you literally can hear a pin drop as you take in the beautiful views.”

It was ideal for

S tart at Boston’s Logan International Airport, but don’t pick up your hire car just yet. Boston is known

as America’s walking city and a stroll through its bustling centre will help shake off the jet lag. Take the ‘T’, its efficient subway line, straight to its historic heart at Boston Common.

Here, by the Visitor Center, is the start of the Freedom Trail, a 2.5 -mile marked route that connects 16 key sites in America’s history. Few other cities have preserved so many colonial buildings. Among them are the Old Statehouse, the Old South

Meeting House where the Boston Tea Party began, and the home of patriot Paul Revere.

Another colonial landmark, Faneuil Hall, is the anchor for a festival marketplace of food vendors and colourful local shops. The North End with its Italian restaurants, Beacon Hill with its cobbled streets and elegant mansions, and the Waterfront offer more to explore, while Back Bay features the Public Garden, two outstanding fine art museums, and fabulous views from the John Hancock Tower.

Out of townNow it’s time to collect your wheels and head for the beach. From the southeast corner of Massachusetts, the Cape Cod peninsula stretches out into the Atlantic like a sandy scythe. Dotted with more than 60 public beaches and dozens of lighthouses, enjoy the walking trails along its pristine coastline and the Cape Cod National Seashore.

Cape Cod remains an idyllic, timeless place of clapboard houses, sleepy harbours and windswept dunes. The mid-Cape villages of Hyannis and South Yarmouth, a 90-minute drive from Boston, are good bases for exploring its many, charming small towns.

Ferries sail to the nearby islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. There are whale-watching excursions and seasonal festivals. But above all,

Take a walk on the High Lane, a fantastic elevated park and promenade built on an abandoned railway line. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to 34th Street, with gardens, artworks and benches where you can admire views of the Hudson River and cityscape.

With the completion of the skyscraper at One World Trade Center, New York is once again home to the tallest building in the Western hemisphere. An observation deck is due to open this year, as is the impressive Westfield Shopping Centre. The complex also includes the moving National September 11 Memorial and Museum, on the site of the former Twin Towers.

Lake Wallenpaupack, marks its northern boundary. This diverse region offers countless activities for a family holiday and, at the end of the day, you can cosy up in a romantic mountain retreat.

Pocono is derived from a Native American name meaning ‘the stream between two mountains’. But the Delaware River that runs through this region is no gentle brook. The Upper Delaware, which has been designated

as a Scenic and Recreational River, churns with whitewater and you can take heart-pounding raft rides through the rapids. The middle stretch of calm water, part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, is a perfect spot to paddle a kayak or to drift lazily down the river in a float tube.

There’s no main city hub in the Poconos. Instead you’ll find dozens of small to mid-size communities

scattered throughout the region. Many people live here year-round, so there’s a friendly, small town atmosphere. Some towns, like Stroudsburg and Milford, have old-fashioned downtown streets and the quaint shops and art galleries lend a traditional appeal to shopping excursions. The Poconos is especially known for its antiques shops, though there’s a designer outlet mall too.

The town of Jim Thorpe, named

after a Native American athlete and Olympic gold medalist, was the home of the first US railroad. You can still see the mansions of early railroad tycoons. It’s one of several historic sites to be discovered.

The Pocono Mountains are delightful in every season. Some say they’re best in the autumn when the trees are bursting with brilliant shades of red, orange and gold. Others love the ski areas and

variety of winter sports. When the snow melts, there are plenty of golf courses, adventure parks and water parks. Spring and early summer are good times to see the region’s many waterfalls, including those at the Dingmans Falls Visitor Center or Bushkill Falls, called the ‘Niagara of Pennsylvania’.

Nine state parks offer a myriad of outdoor sports and adventures. You can amble along old canal towpaths, hike through forests and wetlands, or climb rocky trails to rewarding views. There are miles of challenging biking trails through the gorge or along mountain tracks. Kick back in a boat with a fishing rod, or go birdwatching at the nature sanctuaries where you’re likely to see a bald eagle.

Shenandoah ValleyBack on the road, as you continue south-west through Pennsylvania, a detour beckons. Just a few miles off I-81, the town of Hershey is home to the famous chocolate company, with several attractions to tickle your sweet tooth. Lancaster, about 30 miles further, is surrounded by the so-called Pennsylvania Dutch country, where you can see the traditional Amish and Mennonite lifestyle. The famous Civil War battlefield at Gettysburg is another short 25-mile detour off the Interstate.

The Pennsylvania state line is a cultural as well as a physical border, and when you cross it you are well and truly in the South. Your destination is Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley, which stretches for around 200 miles between the

Blue Ridge Mountains in the east and the Allegheny Mountains in the west. Its lyrical name comes from the river that runs through it.

This is a gracious region, full of charm and Southern hospitality. Many of the quaint downtowns are listed on state and national historic registers, and are lined with old-fashioned storefronts housing restaurants and wine bars, bakeries and cafés, art galleries and gift shops. There are gardens and historic sites to visit, from elegant mansions and plantations, to museums featuring quilts, pioneer and Civil War artefacts.

Fertile farms and pastures cover the rolling landscape of the Shenandoah Valley. You can shop in friendly farmers’ markets, and visit orchards to pick your own apples. Follow the Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail, which features some 20 wineries that produce boutique wines. Many are family-owned and set on farms or estates with wonderful scenic views.

This is one of the most scenic roads in America. The 75 lookout points along the ridge give stupendous views over the valley. In the autumn, the undulating blanket of reds, greens and golds across the treetops is an awesome sight.

The curvaceous road is shared with walkers and bikers, and has a 35 mile-per-hour speed limit. The park contains abundant wildlife, waterfalls, and numerous trails. You can even hike a portion of the famous Appalachian Trail.

Myrtle BeachHop on the Interstate and plunge into the Deep South, surfacing on the coast of South Carolina, and head for the beach. South of the city there are quieter communities such as Surfside Beach and Garden City Beach along the South Strand. Murrells Inlet, a laid-back fishing village, is lined with seafood restaurants along the Marsh Walk. Nearby are Brookgreen Gardens, a wildlife preserve famed for its sculptures. Pawleys Island has a casual, shabby-chic vibe, with upmarket restaurants and charming boutiques. OST OF US WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO PASS A WEEK’S HOLIDAY ON MEXICO’S RIVIERA MAYA, SIMPLY LOUNGING ON THE BEACH WITH SOME GOOD BOOKS AND A FROSTY BEER. BUT FOR A CHANGE OF SCENERY AND TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT, THE YUCATÁN PENINSULA IS AN 80-MILE STRETCH OF COASTLINE OFFERING A WHOLE HOST OF THINGS TO DO – DAWN TILL DUSK.

Mexico By DayEven locals don’t quite know what to call the hybrid amusement parks of Xcaret and Xel–Há. Both parks embrace environmental sustainability, but their aim is mostly to entertain – which they most certainly do. Each park requires a full day and some holiday spends to get the best out of a visit.

Xcaret (pronounced ISH-ca-ret) has plenty of animals (parrots, manatees, jaguars, tapirs, and dolphins you can swim with), featuring performances throughout the day with rodeo tricks, ceremonial dances and more.

Children love to float down the cool, freshwater underground river where you pass through illuminated caves.

Xel-Há (SHELL-ha) has similar attractions, with a lazy-river tube

float, dolphin swims and kayak trips. Go snorkelling, and you’ll feel as if you’re swimming in an aquarium. Bring swimsuits, as lockers, showers and life jackets are provided. (xelha.com)

The reef-protected waters off Akumal Beach, about halfway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, are home to dozens of loggerhead, hawksbill and green sea turtles – some with shells three-foot wide. Snorkel right off the beach (rent gear at the dive shop) to spot them munching on grass, surrounded by tropical fishes, plus you might also spot the odd barracuda and moray eel. A short drive north on a dirt road takes you to Yal-ku Lagoon, an even more protected and somewhat tamer environment that shelters brilliant parrotfish, angelfish, blue tangs and more.

The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, features 1.3 million acres of canal, lagoons and mangroves, home to a protected habitat for more than 330 bird species. The reserve, with its 75 miles of coastline, begins about 10 miles past Tulum. A full-day tour with CESiaK (Centro Ecologico Sian Ka’an) includes a guided walk on a jungle trail and a boat ride through grass-lined canals once used by the Mayans. You’ll spot pelicans, great blue herons and osprey; see a crumbling Mayan temple; and don life jackets to float in the freshwater streams. After lunch, perhaps some grilled chicken, rice, black beans and plantains at the Ecological Center with its stunning ocean view – your guide

Playa Del Carmen is the hub of the Riviera Maya and everyone eventually finds their way to its Fifth Avenue, or Avenida Quinta. Pedestrians rule this car-free street from Avenida Juárez north to Calle 30. Amid the souvenir stands are quirky shops, intriguing folk art galleries and cool fashion boutiques.

Pick up some pieces of rare Mexican amber at Ambar Mexicano, a family-run jewellers. You might be impressed by the chunky yellow and orange pendants hanging outside – but wait until you see the real treasures tucked behind glass inside the shop. Avenida 5, between Calles 4 and 6.

Stay cool and stylish in Playa’s tropical

temperatures with a loose skirt, trousers, halter top or shirt made from lightweight cotton voile at D’Beatriz Boutique. The shop’s amber and turquoise jewellery will complete your look. Just off Calle 2, between Avenida 5 and the beach.

When in Mexico, a browse around a tequila shop is a must. Casa Tequila offers samplers for $5 and some of the hand-painted bottles are more valuable than the tequila inside; they make great keepsakes. Avenida 5, between Calles 14 and 16.

And for the chocolate lovers out there, you must buy a wooden molinillo (traditional Mexican whisk) at Ah Cacao, so you can make that frothy Mexican hot chocolate back home. Plus, with soaps, body creams, vanilla beans and ground coffee – your family and friends back

Consider renting a car for a couple of days to take in the sights. You can’t get lost. There’s only one major road, Highway 307, which runs parallel to the coast from Cancún in the north to Tulum in the south. That way you can make your own choices about what you want to do, perhaps stopping en route for a beachside lunch or browsing the souvenir stalls.

Xcaret México Espectácular presents the country’s history – from pre-Hispanic times to today – through nightly re-enactments and classic dances. In a tribute to Mexican culture, more than 300 actors in traditional costume tell the story of this incredible country. Tickets include entry to the enormous Xcaret park complex three hours before the show, so you have time to walk through the folk art museum or visit some of the resident manatees and macaws. When I was asked to suggest an accessory, I started with the obvious, from phones to tablets. Devon’s Great British GrapesPlanted in 1976, Yearlstone Vineyard (yearlstone.co.uk) was the original British pioneer and offers fascinating tours of its superb winery, where many an English winemaker has learnt their craft. The vineyard and its Deli Shack Café have wonderful views of the River Exe as it flows to the sea. Sample its sparkling Vintage Brut with its attractive orchard fruit and complex biscuity aromas.

Sharpham Estate (sharpham.com) produces a large range of excellent wines and delicious cheeses on a beautiful bend in the River Dart, near Totnes. It makes sparkling wines, highly praised Pinot Noirs and superb dry whites. The tours, tastings and delightful café give you the opportunity to try the Sharpham Estate Selection dry white. Made from Madeleine Angevine grapes it’s light, fruity and refreshingly crisp.

Lily Farm Vineyard (lilyfarmvineyard.com) is another sparkling specialist whose fine Rosé Brut won a silver medal in the International Wine Challenge 2014. The wine is delightfully fruity with vibrant strawberry aromas. When taking a tour, bear in mind their vineyards are very steep.

Another steep, south-facing vineyard is the wonderful Old Walls Vineyard (oldwallsvineyard.co.uk) which is named for the nearby ruins of a bishop’s palace. The whole range is good, as is the tea shop, and it produces an exceptional example of Bacchus, England’s signature white grape. This has a distinctive floral and herbaceous character that will appeal to lovers of Sauvignon Blanc.

The award winning Eastcott Vineyard and Wine Estate (eastcottvineyard.co.uk) is in a stunning location on the edge of Dartmoor and makes superb sparkling wines from the classic Champagne grapes. It’s one of the very few English producers to carry out every stage of the traditional method on site - so who needs to go to Champagne to see great sparkling wine being made? Indulge in a glass of Sparkling Brut with the crisp apple and citrus flavours bursting against your palate.

An Algarve VarietyThe Algarve conjures up images of sun- drenched beaches and perfectly manicured golf-courses rather than wine. The wine produced in the Algarve has rightfully earned recognition over the last twenty years.

As a major tourist destination, it’s fitting that the region’s wine renaissance was kick-started by an outsider. Cliff Richard has been coming here for decades and in 1997 he decided to create a vineyard. His Adega do Cantor (winesvidanova.com) is a beautiful estate near Albufeira with breathtaking views and good wines made from Syrah and Aragonez, aka Tempranillo. Its Vida Nova Tinto offers rich raspberry fruit, perfect with some of the delicious local roast goat. Tours are by appointment only.

In the late 1990’s, Rui Virgínia planted some vines on his family’s orange plantation, Quinta do Barranco Longo (quintadobarrancolongo.com) near Algoz and Albufeira. The results continue to be first rate. His reds are blends of Aragonez and Touriga, while his excellent whites are made from Chardonnay and Arinto. I recommend the Quinta do Barranco Longo Branco, a fresh, creamy and mineral dry white that’s a perfect accompaniment for the local freshly caught fish. Tours and tastings are by appointment.

Quinta do Morgado da Torre (morgadodatorre.com) is an old estate. Family-owned since 1865, it had fallen into disuse by the 1990s, when the family decided to plant new vines and build a modern winery. It is a lovely place, producing excellent wines from a wide range of grapes and there are several options of tour, including one with a meal in a local restaurant. Of its wines, a personal favourite is Alvor Vinha da Barradinha a super ripe, rich red bursting with red fruit flavours.

The only winery in Tavira is Quinta dos Correias. (quintadoscorreias.com.pt) It has been in the Correia family for centuries, and in 2000 the vines were replanted and the winery modernised with impressive results, as its Terras du Luz Tinto testifies. It’s full bodied, oaky and tannic, so don’t leave without buying a bottle of this unique Tavira wine.

Algarve cuisine and wines go hand in hand. With Cataplana, the regional speciality made with local fish, shellfish and chouriço sausage, I suggest opening a bottle of Quinta do Barranco Longo Rosé. Rich and fruity, it stands up to the complex dish, while a glass or two of Quinta do Morgado da Torre’s

Alvor white goes down very well with Queijo de Cabra, goats’ cheese served with Doce de Abóbora, a sweet pumpkin preserve.

Puglia’s Fine ItalianTuscany and Piemonte might get all the fame, but Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot, also boasts some stunning scenery, fabulous food and wonderful wines.

The most evocative part of Puglia is the southern Salento peninsula where you will find the historic city of Lecce, rightly regarded as the jewel of Puglia. Don’t miss Otranto. While most of the coastline here is wild and rocky, Otranto boasts pristine sandy beaches, one of which is right in the centre of town.

Apart from the olive trees, the most iconic image of Puglia is the trulli or stone roundhouses dating from the 19th century and reminding us of how rural life was lived. Puglia was a sleepy backwater until quite recently, but is now awake and making exciting wines from local grapes.

Primitivo (aka Zinfandel) is the region’s most recognised variety - Primitivo di Manduria being the finest example, with its rich blackberry fruit and spicy character.

Negroamaro (literally ‘black bitter’) is the

most widely-grown grape and can be found in all the important wines of the region, including Salice Salentino and Copertino. Typically, wines made from this grape have a rich, savoury, rustic charm that goes superbly with the local food.

Uva di Troia is another important black grape. Thought to have been brought to Italy from Troy by the ancient Greeks, it’s used to make many wines including Castel del Monte, this is named for the beautiful local castle and is famously a tannic red, although dry white and rosé versions are also made.

Modern international grapes feature in recent plantings, so you will find plenty of Cabernet and Syrah with their softer and fruitier flavours.

White wine accounts for less than 20 per cent of production, but Fiano and Greco, as as well as Chardonnay and Sauvignon, show promise. The excellent crisp dry Rosés make

refreshing summer drinking and are perfect with the local cuisine.

Puglia is full of amazing food too and cheese is a real speciality. Canestrato Pugliese, Burrata di Andria and Marzotica are all superb local cheeses which go well with a glass of the region’s wine, while sat gazing over the vines tumbling along the terraces.

Desserts often involve almonds, honey, fresh fruit and a rich fig concentrate called vincotto di fichi. Do make sure you order the sumptuous Moscato di Trani dessert wine, made from sun-dried Muscat grapes, it is a rich blend of honey, nuts, caramel and raisins in a glass.

While in Puglia, I’d suggest visiting: Tormaresca, having estates in Castel del Monte and Salento (tormaresca.it/en); Masseria Altemura between Brindisi and Taranto (masseriaaltemura.it); Castello Monaci, an actual castle near Lecce (castellomonaci.com); Agrinature S.r.l., a producer of organic wine near Apulia.

Texas Wines of the WestStrange as it may seem, Texans began fermenting grapes long before they started

wearing cowboy hats or playing the steel guitar.

In fact, The Lone Star State was making wine a good 150 years before California got in on the act. Development has been slow and although Texas is now the fifth largest wine producing state in the US with around 270 active wineries and 4,400 acres of vines, this is a drop in the wine ocean compared to the Napa Valley’s 500 wineries and 43,000 acres of vines, let alone the rest of California.

There are eight American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) in the State and wherever you are in Texas you won’t be far from a winery. The largest AVA is Texas Hill Country, which really is the centre of the Texan wine industry and contains two smaller appellations within it; Bell Mountain and Fredericksburg. Pretty much any grape you can think of is grown, but increasingly it is the Mediterranean varieties like Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Roussanne, and Viognier, even Picpoul and Albariño, which are important here, as well as lots of Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre blends.

enormously, from the fresh acidic whites of Picpoul and Albariño to the fatter, richer whites from Viognier and Roussanne. Variety is the watchword for the reds too, from the smooth Grenache-based blends to the firm and richly tannic Cabernets.

Texas Hill Country is located to the west of Austin and San Antonio and both of these cities are worth exploring. The Alamo is, of course, San Antonio’s most famous attraction, but there is much more besides, while Austin is world famous as a live music town with fantastic night life and a great atmosphere.

Texan wine is largely sold at the cellar door, so the best way to experience it is to visit the wineries. Make sure you don’t miss: Bending Branch Winery (bendingbranchwinery.com), Duchman Family Winery (duchmanwinery.com), Pedernales Cellars (pedernalescellars.com), Spicewood Vineyards (spicewoodvineyards.com), Wedding Oak Winery (weddingoakwinery.com) and William Chris Vineyards (williamchriswines.com).
