Endings and BeginningsMay 9, 2011

Congratulations and ThanksWe are bucking the trends of media downsizing which is happening across the state and the nation. We are for the most part maintaining staffing where we maintain enrollment and we are even adding time to media positions at some schools.People were amazed at the email I sent out to the MEMO list looking for media candidates to fill the openings that we will have. It does place an expectation on us to perform.2Reflections and PlanningSignificance and Urgency How Much Time Do I Actually Have to Teach Each Student?38 potential class periods at once a week (35 hours/yr)With holidays, field trips, testing and other interruptions-29-35 class periods ( 26.5-32 hours/yr)Take away transitions, behavior, book checkout, etc(22-28 hours/yr)Compare with reading instruction (330 hours/yr)Your time is equal to about 2 weeks of reading!Focused Instruction

The superintendents visionhow can it play out for us? There is so much that we have to do. How can we narrow it down?

Create a solid core of instruction that is consistent across grade levels and across the districtEveryone who teaches media to fourth graders (for example) will deliver these four units and even though you can adapt the units to suit your school and your instructional style we want the standards to be addressed and the concepts to be delivered. Hopefully the units will be generally replicable for all to use.7Atlas RubiconTechnology Use and Concepts: Lesson RepositoryExpanding Literacies: Lesson RepositoryInquiry, Research & Problem-Solving Lesson RepositoryEthical Participation in Global Society Lesson Repository

Beyond that we want to have excellent and substantial lessons available to address the rest of the standards and written in a standardized format.Lets take a look at Atlas to see what I mean. Todays MissionThoroughly examine and improve one lesson for PROCESSHas clearly stated learning targets (students know what theyll be learning and be expected to know)Designed to engage learnersDesigned to manage behaviors and student actions/interactionsProvides for assessment/evaluation by both teacher and learnerProvides differentiation for multiple modalities of learningvisual, aural, kinesthetic and for different skill levels

Todays MissionView the lesson through an observers eyesWhat would they see the teacher doing? What would they see the students doing? What would a student tell them about their learning?

How To ProceedDiscuss every element of the 55 minutes, from the moment the students arrive to the moment they leave. How do you greet them, seat them? What do you say? Questions you askhow students are expected to respond (orally, written, raising their hands, discuss with their neighbor, etc.) what would be the strongest and best way to get the most out of the lesson and into the kids creating curiosity, memory, solid knowledge, vital connections, enhanced skills etc.Analyze how the technology you use supports rigor or merely appeases the kids desire to use itHopes for Next YearLesson Study will be focus of Media PD in 2011-12Engage in Lesson Study four timesForm the Basis for District-Wide PLCsBecome part of your PDPsVideotaping of cooperatively developed lessons Use Curriculum Connect to reinforce this workIncorporate lessons into Atlas RubiconTodays Agenda8:00 am Arrive and sign in (please register in eCompass if you haven't yet) Get some treats8:30-9:00 Greeting, skit and announcements (auditorium)9:10-9:30 Introduction to Lesson Study and divide into today's work groups (media center)9:30-11:10: Work in small groups to focus on one lesson11:15-11:30 Reconvene in media center to share "aha's"
