Australian Aeronautical Velocity ChallengeOn Thursday 5 April our junior and senior Australian Aeronautical Velocity Challenge (AAVC) teams travelled to the regional finals at Banora Point High School.

The junior team consisted of Nick, James, Luke and Cooper (photograph below) and the senior team of Jasper, Charles, Nathanael, and Ethan (photograph below right).

The competition was against other high schools in the region with a place in the Australian final up for grabs. The regional winner is determined by measuring which team’s rocket travels the furthest distance. Teams must use Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) principles as well as considering the aesthetic aspects in the design of their bottle rockets.

For our teams this meant the students giving up recess and lunch breaks to apply the STEM principles to determine the best combination of rocket weight,

fin design, nose cone design and to understand the impact of weather conditions to make changes as required on the day of the final. After extensive testing our teams came up with their prototype and had to remember how to rebuild it on the day of the regional final as all rockets must be constructed in a limited timeframe on the day.

Our junior team performed well; with their rocket achieving a distance of 88m this placed them in third place only 3 metres behind second place. There is a chance that our junior team will gain a wildcard entry to the finals.

Our senior team won their final with a distance of 95 metres! They now progress to the Australian final held at the University of Wollongong on 8 June.

This is an outstanding effort from our schools teams, especially the Year 7 students as they were competing against Year 9 students with a lot more experience.

School Plan 2018-2020Following an exhaustive process of consultation with the school community, the 2018-2020 School Plan has been finalised. If you wish to view the School Plan please copy and paste the following link into your internet browser.

learning and looking after themselves and each other. The program instils in students: how to value themselves, to be proud and confident and encourages them to seek further knowledge. Congratulations to Term 1 reward recipients who achieved more than 90% attendance. The girls were presented at the workshop with Broncos backpacks containing a USB recharger.

Congratulations to Tay Davis, Joanne Skinner, Shay Wolfe, Hayley Down, Jannali Goolagong, Zali Riley, Hannah Dudgeon, Madjenta Henderson, Mia Morris and Xaiesha Kenningale. It is pleasing to note that the whole Year 7 cohort is recognised for their attendance, Congratulations girls on a great start to High School. A special mention also to Hannah Dudgeon who achieved 100% attendance, well done Hannah. This term the girls will be earning a Broncos jacket for attendance above 90%. Remember to explain all absences as this is taken into account with their attendance.

We encourage our Beyond the Broncos participants to attend these important cultural workshops, an outline of the workshop content is sent home with permission notes. Please ensure that permission notes are returned to the school prior to the excursion date, this will prevent unnecessary phone calls to parents on the day and delays to the workshop (Photograph below).

Beyond the BroncosResilience WorkshopBeyond the Broncos students were visited by Broncos and QLD Firebirds ambassadors. Students had the opportunity to meet the newly recruited Caitlin Moran, who is halfback to the Australian Jilaroos and has just signed with the Broncos for the women’s rugby league team. Caitlin will also be joining the team of ambassadors, visiting schools regularly and acting as a mentor for the girls in the Beyond the Broncos program. Queensland Firebirds have an ongoing partnership with the Broncos and Firebirds players Lexi Baker and Tara Hinchcliffe who joined the Broncos ambassadors for the term 2 workshop. These girls interacted with students throughout the workshop assisting them to develop and share their ideas.

This visit was for workshop No 2 of the year. The workshop focused on Resilience, the ambassadors shared their own experiences and offered students some strategies to help develop their own resilience. NRL great Justin Hodges, shared a personal story from his childhood, the hardship that he endured to light the fire in him. His story is inspirational and relatable for many of the students sitting in the workshop. Lexi and Tara also shared their personal inspirations and some strategies they use to demonstrate resilience.

The participation of students in this interactive

beginnings of a special connection between student and mentor. The program culminates in a showcase being held during Education Week highlighting the work students have undertaken and we look forward to seeing what they come up with during the next few weeks! (photograph below).

Youth Mentoring ProgramOur 2018 Youth Mentoring Program has begun! Students from years 8, 9 and 10 had the chance to meet and greet the community volunteers who will guide and inspire them over the next 13 weeks whilst students work on a community project of their own choosing.

All the mentors are volunteers and have very kindly donated their time to come into the school and spend time with the students. They are not only passing on their skills and experience, they are fostering valuable connections with the students and building students’ confidence in order to help them negotiate life outside the school setting.

It was a chance for both students and mentors to talk about their interests and passions and build the

Sport newsHayley Bendl (photograph below) qualified and has now competed at the NSW All School Swimming Championships in the 16 years 50m Breaststroke. This saw her competing for Combined High Schools against the best swimmers from the Catholic and Independent schools. Hayley reached the finals and was placed sixth. This was another fine achievement for this talented athlete. Hayley also swam in the 100m breaststroke and placed seventh.

Riley Lack (photograph below left) recently competed for North Coast at the Combined High Schools state U15 Touch football championships held in Mudgee. Riley was North Coast captain and the team finished in eighth place. He commented that the level of competition was much higher than in previous years. On his return from Mudgee, Riley then trialled in Coffs Harbour for the U15 Rugby League Northern Exchange where a North Coast team plays Hunter and a Northern NSW team is selected. Ryan Foran (photograph below right) also attended this trial and both were selected. Mr Forrester was one of the coaches and said that both boys played very well and noted that Ryan was one of the first chosen for the team. The team will now travel to Myuna Bay near Newcastle in Week 5 to compete in the State Championships.

Cooper Stavar (photograph below left) of Year 7 has been selected in an U13 team to represent Football Gold Coast in the 2018 Football Queensland Community Cup state competition. This year it is being hosted in Mackay in the first week of the next school holidays. Jacob Donnelly (photograph below right) of Year 9 has been selected as a shadow player in the U15 team.
