Enchanted Rock State Natural Area Interpretive Store Project Proposal 

Purpose Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is one of the most popular parks in the state.  During peak times, the park’s Headquarters is often cramped with lines extending out the door. The HQ also features an in‐depth exhibit about the geology and the natural resources of the park, but the exhibit does little to engage the average visitor, especially during peak times when visitors just want to get to the rock.  Park store items are fit into the open spaces in the lobby area, but additional space and a more dedicated location are needed. 

The purpose of this project is to address these issues – visitor flow patterns; outdated and unengaging exhibits; and lack of sufficient park store space – in an integrated way that creates a new experience for park visitors.  Interpretive Services proposes creating an “Interpretive Park Store” in collaboration with park staff and the Business Management program. This document outlines site needs, proposed actions, and a conceptual design for the space.     Site Needs

Remove Carpeting and Replace with Tile (this FY)  Remove Exhibits on Shelf Display, Refinish Shelf and Add Countertop (this FY)  Remove Wall with Etched Glass and Hologram (this FY)  Remove Existing Exhibits  Add Slat Wall System to Long Walls   Install New Exhibits integrated with Park Store Items 

 

Conceptual Design The following floor plan and elevations depict the proposed concept for the space.   Please note that the drawings are not to exact scale.  As the project progresses, more detailed and accurate depictions of the space will be given to the Site Lead and project stakeholders for review.

Features 

Slat Wall for Merchandise Display  Interpretive panels relate directly to merchandise.  Interpretive Panels address crucial management issues, like sun safety, while visitors wait.

This view shows center island in elevation.  Center island features interpretive exhibits that can include tactile elements.  Base of island serves as secure storage for extra merchandise or other items.
