Chegamos a

No “Scherzo”, as cordas cantam.

With “perfect form, balance andoverarching logic, in addition toinventiveness”, Henrique Oswald
is “the enemy of all that is harsh and banal”.His sounds “develop with splendid flexibility”,allowing for variations that display “greatinspiration and the most skilful technique”.1 These are just some of Mário de Andrade’simpressions of the composer, whom he elevatedto the status of a universal creative force,
overriding any Brazilian quality or nationalistimperative. 2
The son of Swiss parents, before he reachedadulthood Henrique Oswald went to study inItaly, and he only returned from there to settle
in Brazil as he approached old age. His career as apianist and composer was free from nationalisticpigeonholing, and earned him a range of awardsand accolades. His music is not easy to locategeographically: the Florence where he studiedwas awash with German and French music,
and young people there were already enjoyingRussian works by the second half of the 19thcentury.
Two works illustrate the difficulty in labellingHenrique Oswald’s work: the Piano Quartet in G
Major, Op.26 and the Piano Quintet in C Major,
Op.18. Each one transports us to a differentlandscape within the composer’s universe.
In the Piano Quartet we feel the rhythm, thatelement that makes the body react, carrying usalong with it. Some scholars believe that theword “rhythm” only features as a metaphor inmusic, its primordial use being linked to dailylife: the rhythm of work, of the city, the sound ofknocking on doors and of footsteps in the streets. It is this rhythm of life, rather than that of dance, that draws us in at the beginning of the work.
In the first movement, an ostinato invites us toaccompany the work. We feel the rhythmic beatof the left hand on the piano. Then a mysteriousharmony leads us into an introspective moment. These are the last sighs of romanticism thatleave us in suspense. It is common to associate
Henrique Oswald’s style of harmonies with thatof his fellow musician Claude Debussy. Perhapsthis is also an expression of the desire to createpoetry within music, to make the piano, thatmachine, talk. The poetry of the period sought tocreate purely sonorous effects, as exemplified by
Paul Verlaine.
In the second movement, the piano isthe protagonist, and the strings accompanyit along a winding path. At certain momentsthe three string instruments come together toform chords. They construct a ladder, andeach rung is consummately designed. Weare taken to different levels, each with an

unprecedented landscape. All that remains isto discover whether we are looking outwardsor within ourselves.
In the “Scherzo” the strings sing. (Inthe Quintet we will see that the creation ofthis type of movement is one of Oswald’sspecialities.) The piano takes on the role ofbasso continuo. Now we can see how thisgeneration was marked by the influence of the
Baroque masters, principally the Bach whowas rediscovered by Mendelssohn. By lookingback to the old masters the composersof the late 19th century learned differentways of creating musical architecture. The accompaniment is an abundance of
simultaneous notes, as the pianist’s handsextend generously. All of this is merely thefirm, old and beautiful foundation for amelody alternately sung by the strings.
The rhythm rises above the beat of
daily life and invites the body to join in.The quartet goes out for a stroll, alongpavements, greeting passers-by. But thepace does not speed up as in EasternEuropean festivities, nor is it syncopatedas in the Americas, or as in the work ofBrazilian composer Alberto Nepomuceno. In this increasingly cosmopolitan and lesspuritanical environment, it is impossible not
to be reminded of the rhythmic stability of thegroups of urban musicians of the belle époque.
The fourth movement – “Adagio(Romanza)” – is a fugue. The cello leads amelody, a proclamation of long notes, and theother instruments follow in its wake. The pianoreminds us that it is also a string instrument,
joining in with the others as equals.
The bucolic mood continues into the finalmovement, a sunny piece of music, in whicha rural song can be heard – nostalgia for thecountryside in an age of great urbanization. The quartet ends with all the instruments“singing” a sweet refrain.
Right at the beginning of the Piano
Quintet, we sense that this is a workwith a different source of inspiration,
written by a very different Henrique Oswald. Its main motif sounds like a secular song, one
of those that an entire population would beable to sing in unison.
What is notable is how the composercreates diverse melodies that leave a lastingimpression in each section of the work. There are those composers who prioritizemelody and others who create a more purelyharmonic and technical piece of music.

Oswald’s work represents the best of bothworlds: while the most inventive phrasescan be heard, the accompaniment createsdiscreet descants, new lines, one minute onthe strings, the next on the piano. Nothinghinders the principal voice, and this is perhapsthe major legacy that Oswald acquired fromSchubert: accompaniments that only help thesoloist melody.
The “Scherzo” of the Quintet reinforcesthe idea that it is in this musical genre that thecomposer’s work is seen at its best. Accordingto Mário de Andrade, it was HenriqueOswald who “created the most delicious andpure smile that has ever graced a Brazilian
mouth”.3
The curious thing about Oswald’scomposition process is that, even though heis a highly acclaimed and extremely technicalpianist, his melodies are not derived from thatnatural journey that the hands make acrossthe keyboard, nor from a formula that wouldgive rise to a mathematical melody. They areinspired lines, which spring up as if by magic,as can be noted in the “Molto Adagio”.
The final movement has a rousingly fasttempo. During a virtuoso performance fromthe piano, the strings together play theirpart perfectly: the instruments cooperatewith each other, completing phrases andinterrupting each other in an amicable way, to
create a harmonious ballet.
