History

1880- Present

1850-1899

The first N.C. State fair was held in 1853 and was 4 days long. In 1861 the fair was not held due to the Civil War it was reopened in 1869. In 1873 the fair is moved across from the NC State University. In 1877 the NC Department of Agriculture was created

1900-1935

In the year 1900 the first food booths pop up on the fairgrounds, run by churches and civic groups as fundraisers. President Theodore Roosevelt speaks to fairgoers in 1905. The fair moves for the last time in 1928 and the N.C.D.O.A is placed in control.

1936-1950

In the year 1938 the fair features 40 high-type shows and rides, replacing the carnival outfit of previous years. 1941 record-breaking crowds attend Fair and exhibits were so numerous that tents had to be erected to accommodate the overflow of livestock. In the year 1942 the fair closes once again due to World War II. The fair reopens in 1946. One million free tickets issued to North Carolina school children for admittance on Young North Carolinians’ Day in 1946.

1950-1976

In 1952 the State Fair Livestock Pavilion is completed, boasting the world’s first column-free roof. It was renamed the J.S. Dorton Arena in 1961. The cost of Dorton Arena per square foot was estimated at $16.21, which was considered very low at the time. In 1953 The Fair is 100. on 1954 the fair makes TV. Jim Graham Building completed. In 1960 the fairs admission prices are .75 for adults and .35 for child. In 1961 the fair is now 6 days long. President Gerald Ford speaks to fairgoers in 1976.

1986-Present

Fair extends to 10 days in 1986. In 2006 Fair posts an attendance record of 846,724 attendees during Commissioner Graham's last fair. Tickets and ride books are available online at www.ncstatefair.org. Winn Dixie Stores pay a record $41,000 for the Grand Champion Steer at the Jr. Livestock Auction. The fair is 150 in 2003. In 2006 the fair has over 100 rides. The fair shatters attendence records in 3 days in 2007. For the first time in 22 years, officials added a day to the fair, making the this an 11-day State Fair in 2008

Agriculture

I discovered food products from across North Carolina at the Got to Be NC Agriculture exhibit, located just outside the Scott Building. This exhibit displays North Carolina’s agricultural diversity and educates fairgoers on what products that are locally grown.
