Enabling MRSA reporting via NPEx
Mark Hasselholdt
Contract Manager
Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership
• Transfer of Microbiology services from Tameside to MMMP at
Manchester Royal Infirmary in October 2016
• Previously Tameside Microbiology referred some Virology work to
MMMP
• Requirement for work to be processed electronically from end-to-
end
• Both sites use Telepath
• NPEx selected as preferred method
Background
Challenges
• No previous electronic links between sites. Tameside previously
printed Virology reports from MMMP via remote printer
• No previous experience of processing Bacteriology tests via NPEx
either at MMMP or X-Lab
• Volume of work increase (Bacteriology, NPEx)
• Different link to previous NPEx links at MMMP (size, dynamic)
• Timescale (contract deadlines, staff)
• Resources (staff, lack of experience of setting up referred
Microbiology tests in Telepath or NPEx)
MRSA Screening
• Large volume (~2,000) swab samples per
month
• Requirement for positives to be reported to
Tameside ICN
• Differences in Telepath setup
• No. swab sites
• Field used to book site
• Test added in NPEx
• Mappings added in NPEx for both sites
• Reports defined for both sites in Telepath, with accompanying rules
added to Tameside rulebase
• Tameside Medical Authorisation group added in MMMP Telepath
• ICN reporting enabled
• Routine added in MMMP Telepath to scan in swab site

eliminates booking in errors
• Simplified resulting – Less chance of errors
• Speed of reporting
• Cost, environmental benefits
Enhancements
The Future
• Lab Automation – Site no longer important
• Potential switch to new LIMS
• Overhaul reporting method
• Improve test, specimen type mapping
• Direct mapping of results into Tameside
