By Lola SearcySAY IT AIN’T SO!! WHAT?!! Would some-

body please tell us what’s really going on?Nobody told us anything officially when “Wig”and Nanette left! You, know we all heard therumors…disagreement with management; per-sonal issues; personalities clashed, etc. That’swhat I heard when “Wig” and Nanette left. Andto be honest, even though I didn’t like it (andwho cares what I think, anyway). I made theadjustment because we still had Skip, Sam andChris! Then Skip moved to the grown up andsexy late night show, I’ve heard Nanette doinga few commercial spots on the show and I don’tknow anything about “Wig’s” whereabouts! But, c’mon now?! What ya’ll gonna do, K104?Skip Cheatum and the ‘Da Playground? ‘CauseI gotta be honest, when Skip Murphy, “Wig”,Nanette, Sam & Chris were a part of the morn-ing show, I would not dare get in my car andbegin my morning commutes to Dallas with anyother radio station; it was Skip Murphy and themorning show! When Skip Cheatum and ‘DaPlayground took over, I would not purposelymiss you guys, but if I found myself driving toDallas and realized I wasn’t listening to ‘DaPlayground, I would eject my Beverly Crawford,Kathy Taylor, Anthony Hamilton and India ArieCD’s to listen to K104 cause I knew Sam’s newsand weather reports would make me laugh andthink all at the same time, and I knew Chris

would keep me on top of my game! They madefor intelligent, interesting and funny conversa-tion! They made the people and the situationsI have to deal with at work a little more tolera-ble! I’M SORRY SKIP CHEATUM AND DAPLAYGROUND…YALL AIN’T FUNNY!! ATALL! I don’t know what is going on at K104;but…do you really think that was a smart move,Management?! I mean Chris Arnold has been apart of the K104 team since 1978! I was still inHigh School then! And when Skip Murphy andthe home team came on board in 1993; alongcame Sam Putney, the “Wig”, Nanette and Chriswere already there; it just brought such arefreshing and welcoming change to morningradio!

So, I guess we’ll never know what hap-pened. They wouldn’t tell the truth if it killedthem. I’ll just say this… I know times are hard,so it may have been about contract negotia-tions; but if it had anything at all to do with per-sonalities, K104: YOU IN BIG TROUBLE!!!JUST LOST ONE LISTENER! By Lola SearcyEldrick “Tiger” Woods is BACK! Tiger Woods will

be making his return to golf this week during theMASTERS tournament scheduled for Thursday, April8th – Sunday, April 11th. Tiger will return to thefamiliar, comfortable and successful greens at theAugusta National Golf Course in Augusta, Georgia. It’s been a few months since Tiger and his wifeSwedish model and Actress, Elin had their “episode”and video footage has been shown, and every televi-sion show has talked about it! Everybody that is any-body has had their say about what happened withWoods and his wife. Well, what ever happened, sinceTiger left, the game of golf has not been the same. Imean, let’s be real. Tiger Woods is the reason mostof us started watching golf, I know that’s the onlyreason I did! Truthfully, the Golf world missed him awhole lot more than we did! Let me see a show ofhands of all of our readers who have even botheredto watch a game of golf since the Tiger and Elin fias-co? Just what I thought! So, that means that adver-tisers were paying all that money to advertise onnational television and no one was watching! Nobodywas rushing out to by the golf clubs he used…Carsare way too expensive to just run out and buy any-way, but seriously though, Tiger Woods is the reasonI started looking seriously at the new Buick cars!Have you seen the watch? It took the golf commu-nity long enough! I’m surprised they waited this longto get him back. You know his stint in rehab was justso the PGA (Professional Golf Association) could jus-tify his return to the sport, don’t you?!

Welcome back, TIGER! You’ve been nice enoughto the media! Don’t do anymore interviews aboutyour personal life! When they ask, just say, “NOCOMMENT”! It’s none of our business anyway! Eventhough I don’t agree with what you did, you don’thave to answer to me or anybody else for that mat-ter! And the women…well, all I know is…A LADYnever tells!

So, give them something to talk about, Tiger!Your Golf game and the reason you are THE GREAT-EST GOLFER IN THE WORLD AND THE FIRST BIL-LION DOLLAR ATHLETE!!! YOU LOOK GOOD INGREEN!!

I’m sure many of you, by now, havereceived the email telling of PresidentObama and the First Family, and Mrs.Marian Robinson, mother of Mrs.Michelle Obama, their visit to AllenChapel African Methodist EpiscopalChurch, in Washington, D.C.’s 8th Ward,on Easter Sunday morning. Well, forthose who have not had the opportunityto read about this event, this is youropportunity.

“President Obama, First LadyMichelle Obama, daughters Melia andSasha and Mrs. Marian Robinson, motherof Mrs. Obama, attended the 11:00 a.m.Easter services at Allen Chapel, AfricanMethodist Episcopal Church, in SoutheastWashington’s Ward 8.

The motorcade left the North Porticoat 10:45 a.m. (The South Lawn was setup for the Monday Easter Egg Roll),rolled down 15th Street, past the TidalBasis, where throngs were examining thefaded cherry blossoms, to the church at2498 Alabama Av. SE. The Church’s sub-

title is “The Cathedral of Southeast.’’The overflow crowd of congregants

was standing, clapping and singing“Alleilua’’ when the first family enteredvia a side door at 11:05 a.m. and walkedalong the edge of the sanctuary to sit farstage right in the second pew, setting offapplause, cheers and cell-phone cam-eras. The altar was flanked by theAmerican flag, in front of the Obama’spew, and the Episcopal Church’s flag onstage left.

The pool was positioned at the backof the church, 20 pews behind theObama family. Ten badged ushers in darksuits and bowties and white gloves linedthe two aisles.

A 50-person choir arrayed on threerows in the sanctuary facing the congre-gation sang several gospel songs, clap-ping and waving to the beat of a key-board ensemble. The president swayedgently to the strong beat and the amped-up sound system.

A number of speakers referred to the

president’s attendance. “The president ofthe United States and his family,’’ “ourblack president,’’ “the commander inchief,”

The Rev. Dr. Michael E. Bell Sr., pas-tor of the church, referred to the presi-dent as the “most intelligent, mostanointed, most charismatic president ofAmerican.’’ He called Mrs. Obama “hisbeautiful wife – TV cameras don’t do herjustice.”

“God has His hand all over you,’’Pastor Bell said, referring to the presi-

ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST

I mentioned in lastweek’s prayer closet, that God made manfor his glory and tosatisfy His desire forfellowship, conversa-tion and appreciation. When God mademan, He blessed himand spoke to him. That was the begin-ning of a heavenlycommunication sys-tem. It was the love

device by which God poured out hisheart to man and man poured out hisheart to God. Their richest joys camewhen “The voice of Lord God camewalking in the garden.” They walkedand talked together. God told man howhe loved him. God told man his will forhim. Man discovered that God is thesupplier of all his needs. It was then andeven now that man seeks to please Godby fellowship, conversation and appreci-ation and it all begins in prayer.

By Jordan BlairThe Texas Relays in Austin has been a

wonderful event to attend for many years. Many diverse black people come in loadsfrom all over the Country to see this mas-sive event every year. With the economy insuch bad shape, this event brings about amajor economic impact to Austin in thetune of 8 million dollars or more as esti-mated by the Chamber of Commerce. The83rd Clyde Little Field Texas Relays wasvery entertaining and captivating as it isevery year. The weather was very trackfriendly with the sun beaming and very fewclouds. This year DISD only had DallasMadison men’s track team and Skyline girl’strack team that entered the track meet.Other districts like Mansfield, Desoto, andLancaster made an appearance at themeet. Where are the rest of the trackteams in DISD? It’s almost as if we don’thave any more talent coming out of thisgreat sports city of Dallas. The TexasRelays Is a meet that brings talent from allover the Country and even abroad, HighSchools, Colleges, Universities, you nameIt. Athletes and many others gather eachyear to give the High School students theopportunity to show case their talents forscholarships ,Etc…

This was the same case back In 1985,during that record breaking meet and thedual between Hawthorn High School trackteam from California and Roosevelt High

School track team from Dallas thatchanged the way the Texas Relays hasoperated since.

Not all records, apparently, are made tobe broken. It’s been 25 years since a pio-neering school team journeyed fromCalifornia to challenge Texas’ fastest run-ners, including one still considered bysome to be the best over prep sprinter,“The Robot,” Roy Martin. The clash helpedchange the fact of the Texas Relays, and itproduced a pair of races that were electricand indelible. The time of 3 minute sand7:40 seconds that Mike Marsh and hisHawthorne, CA. teammates scorched to inthe 1,600 meter relay still stands not onlyas a Texas Relays record, but as a nationalhigh school standard.

Also remaining on the Relays’ recordbooks is a 10.18-second 100 meters thatMartin blazed to that weekend. Theshootout between the schools and theirsuperstars was so intense that neitherMarsh Thomas nor Martin talked toreporters after their final event, the 1,600-meter relay. The defeat in that race stillstings Martin, who half-joked that he wouldbe sure to stay in Dallas when informedthat the Hawthorne relay team would behonored Saturday at Myers Stadium.“That’s almost more than I can take,”Martin said with a sign. “I'd give anythingif we could go back and do it again.”

instant. Pain, sorrow, hunger, anger, confu-sion, and desperation. God please help, andshow us how we can help one another.

The song writer wrote a wonderful praisechorus with the words, "As the deer panteth

for the water so mysoul longeth afteryou." We have sungthat song many timesbringing to mind ourlonging after God andour great anticipationand desire to be inHis presence.

Psalm forty-twoand forty-three wereoriginally written as asingle psalm. This canbe seen by reading

the two psalms together and witnessing theconsistent flow and seamless message. Inthese psalms the writer remembers what itwas like to praise God, but is currently at apoint where praise does not seem possible. Helongs to be with God but he can't.

Psalm forty-three continues by asking Godfor vindication and protection; "rescue mefrom deceitful and wicked men" (Psalm 43:1).The writer desperately wants to praise but isunable. God seems distant and uninvolved, and the enemy is fierce. But in spite of thechallenges, the writer is confident he will oneday return.

"Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why sodisturbed within me? Put your hope in God, forI will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God."Psalm 42:11 and 43:5

A deer that pants after water desires some-thing it cannot have. There is a barrier keepingthe deer from the water, and so the deer pantsin frustration. The writer is at the frustratingpoint of panting, but is reassured that therewill one day be true reason to praise.

Many people woke up this morning wonder-ing if they will ever be able to praise God.Some are facing earthquakes and death, butmany others are facing the separation and painwhich keeps them from God. And yet, we haveso many reasons to praise, so many reasons todeclare His goodness and grace. Jesus told uswe would have troubles in this world but thensaid, "But take heart! I have overcome theworld" (John 16:33). Through all the confu-sion, anger and doubt, He is still our "refugeand strength, an ever-present help in trouble"(Psalm 46:1).

I pray that God will use these words to min-ister in a mighty way today. I pray they will findtheir way to those who are in great need. Weall have reason for hope. He will never leaveus, will never stop calling our name. Let'sresolve to face our trials, no matter how great, and confidently proclaim "I will yet praise!"

dent. “Anyone would be foolish to come up against him.”Pastor Bell called Mrs. Robinson “a true AMEer” who

was “born an AMEer.”Pastor Bell said “it was no accident that he (Obama)

is here in light of what happed here last Tuesday,” refer-ring to the drive-by shooting deaths of four people in theAfrican American community in one of the worst out-breaks of violence in recent Washington history. Thepresident’s presence was “helping our community heal,”Pastor Bell said.

Pastor Bell said attendees included Washington, D.C.Mayor Adrian Fenty and family, and Marion Barry, D.C.Council Member from Ward 8.

Mrs. Obama wore a cream-colored scooped-backelbow-length dress. The president wore a dark suit. Meliawore a pink dress and Mrs. Robinson wore a bright rose-colored dress. Your pooler could not spot Sasha.

Pastor Bell announced that the Obama family wouldleave after they receive communion. The first familykneeled at the communion rail, far stage right, as the Rt.Rev. Adam Jefferson Richardson, Jr., presiding bishop, recited the Lord’s Prayer and then distributed communion, starting far stage left and working his way to the first fam-ily. History of Allen Chapel, AMEWhen the Civil War started in 1861, the future of

Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church had already recorded at leasta decade of service to free Blacks in the community of“Good Hope”, the earliest settlement in the “Anacostia”area of Washington, D.C. Following the war, Allen Chapelbecame the focal point and center of activity for a grow-ing congregation. It attracted many former slaves whopurchased small plots of land and settled around GoodHope Hill.

Rev. A.W. Wayman and later Rev. J.H. Shorter ofIsrael A.M.E. Church (now C.M.E.) provided early leader-ship, and by 1860, the church was organized and firmlyestablished on Hampton Road, which was renamedAlabama Ave. in 1924.

At least one structure was destroyed by fire. The stur-dy “little white church” served the congregation from the1920’s until the Rev. James Williamson led them into thenew brick sanctuary in 1963, located at 2498 AlabamaAve. S.E., Washington, D.C.

In 1989, the church completed construction on thepresent multi-purpose building, which is used continuous-ly for church activities and community events. In 1991,the Church proudly dedicated the newly reconstructedsanctuary that we use today.

Rev. Michael E. Bell, a dynamic preacher and teacher,is now Senior Pastor of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church. I’msure this was a momentous occasion for Rev. Bell and hisentire congregation. Way to go Allen Chapel!

Relays, Continued from Page 5

Fans, however, were anything but dis-appointed by those 1985 Texas Relays. Most of 11,000 who filled the MemorialStadium that unforgettable Saturday leftthinking they had just caught a sneak pre-view of a couple of future Olympic goldmedalists. They had, but not even thesprinters could have anticipated who theyturned out to be.

Even by Texas’ lofty standards, the1980s were a special era in high schooltrack. “It was just an awesome time to berunning high school track,” said JoeDeLoach, who won the Class 4A 100 and200 meter state titles in 1984.

Former Dallas Roosevelt coach EarnestJames still maintains that no one, not evenCarl Lewis, was a better high school sprint-er than Martin. More than another fastphenom, Martin was an entertainer, a rockstar in spikes. .”

In closing I still ask the QUESTIONWHERE WAS THE DALLAS TEAMS? Wemight have missed the Robot of this era, ohI forgot he was stuck In Dallas and didn’tget to perform on the biggest stage toshow his wares.

Flozell “the Hotel” Adams no longer aCowboy. A1998 2nd round draft pick wasreleased Friday along with safety KenHamlin. That would seem to suggest thateither Doug Free is ready for prime time orthe Cowboys will make a move in freeagency or both.

With an uncapped year coming up andthe Cowboys having ideas of participatingin the first Super bowl at Jerry’s world, itwould be unheard of to enter such animportant season with two key positions assafety an left tackle being questionablepositions.

After investing so much money in TonyRomo to have his blindside unprotected orquestionable protection. Adams releasebrings mixed emotion from Cowboy fansthat’s just the nature of the position.Adams received quite a few penalties, thatwas the nature of the position also.

Left tackle usually pit’s the largestoffensive lineman against The smallest, quickest, most athletic defensive linemen. That works well for the offensive lineman ifall plays were running plays and the biggerman is going forward. That changes great-ly when it’s a passing situation an the big-ger guy has to back up.

When the Cowboys won their firstsuper bowl it was Ralph Nealy, Ralph got somany holding calls, people would call himgrabbers. Every body spoke negativelyabout Ralph, all but Roger Staubach, Rogercalled him friend. In the Jimmie Johnsonera Skip Bayless said the Cowboys wouldnever win a Super bowl with Mark Tuineaat Left tackle, they won three. Holding, tripping, hands to the face are often callsleft an right tackles usually get, and some-time it’s the type plays need to help quar-terback stay in the game and some casesthe league. Skip said Mark couldn’t blockthe likes of Clyde Simmons with out help. That’s a fact of life most left tackles, evenHall of Fame types need help, when downan distant favor the defender.

The tackle position is a very visible, andvery importantposition. An infrac-tion quite oftendraws a penalty amistake sometimesbrings the para-medics on the fieldand in some case aconcussion for theq u a r t e r b a c k .Concussions hasbeen the demise ofmore qb’s than interceptions.

To the novice those type penalties stopdrives, changes momentum an take teamsout of scoring position. Causes coaches tolose their job, but it causes quarterbacksand running backs to buy Rolex watchesfor Christmas and season end for saidoffenders.

Each of the tackles I mentioned, therewere a lot of people that wanted them outof here and Flozell was no different. Talk totheir peer group, Justin Tucks one ofFlozell”s staunches rivals was ask who wasthe best left tackle in the league, FlozellAdams was the answer. Doug Free mightgo down as the best left tackle to ever playin the NFL, or the Cowboys could make atrade or draft the best to ever play. Thatwon’t demean the career or the effort thatFlozell gave the Cowboys. Before you cele-brate flozell’s leaving lets salute what hedid while he was here.

If President Obama wereWhite there never wouldhave been such thing as “T-Parties”. There never wouldhave been slander remarksmade against certain peoplein the Congress. There neverwould have been signs withPresident Obama’s picture onit portraying Hitler, a monkeyetc. If President Obama wasWhite there would neverhave been disrespect showntoward him, simply becauseHe is the President of the

United States of America. There have been other presidents who

passed or tried to pass bills, which were unpopu-lar to American people, but they never lostrespect for the President because of the positionhe represents. In President Obama’s case it’s dif-ferent, because the Southern White’s, especiallythe male factor do not think a Black man is capa-ble of leading this country. President Carter madethis plain sometime ago, and people booedCarter for making that statement. Don’t get uswrong here, I know that this does not apply to allsouthern Whites, because I have talked with afew young White males who believe PresidentObama is trying to help all people. The reasonwhy he is president today is directly or in-direct-ly because of the young White voters. You doknow that thirty three million Black voters nevercould have put President Obama in office againstthe other 274 million people, which means thathe had to carry most of the votes from that 274million people who were not Black. If President

Obama was White these news commentators onFOX TV and some other news stations would notdare to disrespect a President of the UnitedStates the way they have President Obama. It isa shame how this country has treated thisPresident, it would not make any difference if hewas green, he is still the President of this coun-try, and we as a people should respect him as thePresident.

If President Obama was White, he couldhave done what Bush did without anything beingsaid to the contrary. As we all know Bush and hisstaff lied about Nuclear weapons in Iraq in orderto send troops there. Bush almost broke SocialSecurity the first three months he was in office. No one said anything about the stimulus moneyhe gave to the rich. He gave the poor $360.00,that was to keep the poor people quiet, but thebig companies and rich received millions of dol-lars. No one, or no commentator on the newssaid anything about it. If President Obama wereWhite, he would be respected as President ratherthan be called a lie on National TV by a Whiteracist. If President Obama were White he wouldbe called President Obama on the news insteadof “Obama”. President Obama was hand pickedby God to do what he is doing. There is notanother Black man in this world that would be ascalm about all this as President Obama is. Whatreally bothers this 21st century racist, is the factthat there has never been another electedPresident in the White House with the mind thisman has, except John F. Kennedy and JimmyCarter, they come real close. What most peopledo not understand is the fact that God put him

wonderful “ResurrectionSunday” as the body ofChrist again celebrated ourking’s victory over death.Union Hope participated inSunrise service with theSinai District Association atthe Good Shepherd PrimitiveBaptist church where theElder Charles William servesas pastor. Elder JohnRichardson pastor of Zion

Chapel Primitive Baptist church delivered thenews that the tomb is empty. Church schoollesson was “The Community faces Pain andJoy” John 16:16-24,20:11-16. We saw that thedisciples were like many today they heard Jesusteaching that he would suffer and die yet theydid not grasp what he was talking about. Hesays “a little while, and you shall not see me:and again a little while, and you shall see mebecause I go to my father. He was trying to pre-pare them for his crucifixion; they heard but did

not understand. Jesus taught them how todirect their prayers in the future assuring themthat “Whatsoever” they would ask the fatherhis name, he would give them. This did notmean what many take it to mean today, thatwhatever we ask in his name the Father is obli-gated by this promise to do it. Jesus is speak-ing in relation to ministry not houses and cars. Our King conquered our last enemy death, andarose on the third day “Victorious “that allmight be assured that death has been con-quered that there is life after death. Our morn-ing message was delivered by our pastorEld.L.T.Morgan from the subject “From doubt tofaith” John 20:24-29. For the doubters we haveThomas the disciples who doubted the reportthat Jesus was back from the dead anddeclared that he would not believe unless hecould feel the nail prints in his hand and placehis hand in the wound in his side. Jesus madeanother appearance just for him and allowedhim the opportunity to examine him with hishands. He ever lives!!

Be blessed

there “FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS”. No matterwhat he comes up with it will work because ofthe only wise God our Father.

If you read Tuesday’s paper over in thebusiness section you saw positive signs of theeconomy moving upward. Just look at what thenews say, In the 3rd paragraph, “and they saythey no longer fear a double-dip recession-inwhich the end of government stimulus moneywould tip the economy back into contraction.”the economy added 162,000 jobs last month. The most in nearly 3 years, which means wewere in a down economy 2 years beforePresident Obama became President.Businesses are hiring at a higher rate now, andthere is a reason for all this, “GOD”. “FOR SUCHA TIME AS THIS” I am sure that many of ourreaders are aquatinted with the book of Esther.Esther becomes queen, because KingAhasuerus loved her more than the others. When she was made queen, she was now in a

position to save her people, and that is whyMordecai, the only father she knew told herthat “Thou art come to the kingdom for such atime as this.” That is what God is doing withPresident Obama right now. President Obamawas made president by God in order to carryout the will of God for a people at this appoint-ed time. This is why everything he comes upwith will pass for the good of the people of theUSA. President Obama is our blessing from GodHimself. Watch this, President Obama will winthe next election by a wider margin than he didthis time.

This is a question of the day. There areabout 14 or 16 states protesting to courtsagainst the Health Care Reform. What wasPresident Obama’s very successful professionbefore he became involved in politics?

Let us not forget to read our Bibles, andmay God bless you REAL GOOD, and may Heever keep you in His loving care.

He was reared from age two atthe Bethlehem Baptist Church,Dallas, TX under the pastorate of

the late Rev. Fred Bookman. The late James McGlover,a choir member at Bethlehem, was named his godfa-ther. McGlover played a vital part in Pastor Smith’s for-mulative years, his early religious growth, and his pathto the Mt. Pisgah Church.

He then answered the call of Sims Chapel,Dallas, TX and served there faithfully for four years. InMarch, 1972 Pastor Smith assumed leadership of theMt. Pisgahresulted in a ministry that is recognized on national, state, and local levels. Rev. Smith had a love forpreachers and has been fruitful in producing manysons in the ministry.

Pastor Smith’s deeds speak for him. He devotedhimself unselfishly and tirelessly to a host of humani-tarian causes. His activities were extensive and hefound the time and energy to serve, to work, and to

lead, assuming innumerable burdens with humor andgrace.

He united in marriage to Bernice Brewster on June17, 1957 and to this union six children were born. Shepreceded him in death on February, 12, 1988.

On June 25, 1994 Pastor Smith was joined in holywedlock to Joyce Hessert and they embarked on a lov-ing journey that lasted for fifteen years, nine monthsand four days. Affectionately known as “Pops” by someand “Packy” by others, he lovingly touched the lives ofmany who will cherish his love and legacy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, MaryPollard and Vivian Smith, wife and mother of his chil-dren, Bernice Brewster-Smith, one daughter, CarolynD. Smith and sister, Diane Booker.
