Mark 10:12-16“People were bring-ing little children toJesus to have himtouch them, but thedisciple rebukedthem. When Jesussaw this, he wasindignant. He said tothem, “Let the littlechildren come to me,and do not hinderthem, for the king-

dom of God belongs to such as these.I tell you the truth; anyone who willnot receive the kingdom of God like alittle child will never enter it.’ And hetook the children in his arms, and puthis hands on them and blessed them”

After watching the terrible situation inHaiti I was overwhelmed by the grief anddespair that exits there. My heart goes outto the children and I pray that God makesa way for them. God is the answer in trou-bled times and good times. Amen!

In the ancient world, children had nostatus. Back then a person could literallythrow children away by exposing unwant-ed infants at birth. There is a famous letterwritten in 1 B.C. by a poor laborer to hispregnant wife in Alexandria, advising herto keep the child if it was boy and to castit out if it was a girl. The unscrupulouswould collect exposed children and raisethem to be gladiators or prostitutes andeven disfigure them to enhance their valueas beggars This was the world that Jesuslived in a world that did not have time forchildren.

You may think you are much differentthan the disciples who tried to keep thechildren away from Jesus), but maybesome of us resemble them more than wewould like to admit. Sometimes we hinderchildren from coming to Jesus. How?There are at least three ways: (1) By yourattitude “Children are a bother” messy;noisy; do not put money in the offeringplate; waste of time, money, and energy toreach them); (2) by your example: “Dowhat I say, not what I do.” Children canlearn hypocrisy and negativity from theexample of others in the church’ especiallyparents); (2) by our theology; “Childrencannot understand the gospel and besaved.”

Here are three reasons why you and Ishould not hinder children from coming toJesus:

1. Jesus values children just as muchas adults. “People were bringing little chil-dren to Jesus to have him touch them”Notice that it does not say “parents” werebringing them to Jesus. I am sure most ofthese people were parents, but probably

some were not. Bringing children to Jesusis for everyone, not just parents. Some ofthe greatest ministers to children are thosewho never had children. Among them wasJesus. “But the disciples rebuked them”“Them” refers to the people bringing thechildren to Jesus. Why? We do not knowfor sure. Maybe they thought Jesus wastoo busy or too tired to be bothered withchildren. They probably held the view oftheir culture: “Children should be seen andnot heard.”

What was Jesus’ reaction? “WhenJesus saw this, he was indignant.” To be“indignant” means to be “angry orannoyed at the unfairness of unreason-ableness of somebody or something” TheKing James Version says “he was muchdispleased.” Jesus was not just a littleupset; He was very angry in a good way.

Why was Jesus indignant? It wasbecause He loves the little children. ToHim, they are not a bother; they are notunimportant; they are not a waste of time.Jesus wants to bless the little children. How old were these children? We read thatthey were “little children.” Some of themwere small enough for Jesus to pick themup in His arms. Luke writes in His Gospelthat some of them were “babies.” Amen!2. Jesus invites children to come to Him.Children are more likely to come to Jesus.Compare: “Make adults come in” it says inLuke 14:23 and “Let the little childrencome to me.” Maybe I am making toomuch out of the word “let,” but it is a factthat leading an adult to Christ is muchmore difficult than leading a child to Him.

One of our main strategies as a churchshould be to reach young people for Christ.Children have their whole lives to live forJesus. Most children can understandenough of the gospel to be saved. I believechildren can understand that they are sin-ners do bad things, that Jesus died on thecross for their sins and rose again, thatJesus will save them if they ask Him to.James Dobson has said, “Do not just sitback and hope your children, grandchil-dren, or children in your Sunday schoolclass, youth group, or whatever trust inChrist. You have to actively pursue theirsalvation. Amen!

The Apostle Paul wrote in Timothy3:14-15; it says, “Continue in what youhave learned and have become convincedof, because you know those from whomyou learned it, and how from infancy youhave know the holy Scriptures, which areable to make you wise for salvationthrough faith in Christ Jesus.” Amen!

Some people, questioning the validityof childhood conversions, might argue,“Many people who trusted in Christ as chil-dren never go on to live for Him.” That’strue, but it’s also true of many adults.

Jesus talked about this in His parable ofthe sowersoils in Mark 4:1-20. Amen!

3. Jesus says children have the rightcharacteristics for receiving salvation. “Itell you the truth, anyone who will notreceive the kingdom of God like a littlechild will never enter it” Jesus was not say-ing that every child is saved. The Bible isclear that the moment a child is conceived,he or she inherits a sinful nature. Psalms51:5 says “Surely I was sinful at birth, sin-ful from the time my mother conceivedme” Amen!

But what happens to children who die?I think we are given a clue in 2nd Samuel12:18-23. After his infant son died, Davidsaid, “I shall go to him, but he shall notreturn to me” David expected to go toheaven when he died, so David’s state-ment can be interpreted as meaning thatDavid believed his son was in heaven. Ibelieve that God shows mercy to thosewho because of age or mental deficiencyare incapable of either faith or willful unbe-lief Jonah 4:11says, “more than a hundredand twenty thousand people who cannottell their right hand from their left”. Goddoes this not because they are deservingof heaven no one is, but because in Hisgrace He chose to save them. I do notbelieve there is an exact age when a child

becomes responsible for trusting in Jesusoften called the age of accountability. Ithink there is a condition of accountabilityevery child and person is different, not anage of accountability.

Jesus was not saying that you have tobe childish in order to be saved. Jesus wassaying that you have to become like a childin order to be saved. The key word is“like.” We need childlike faith in order to besaved. I believe there are two qualities ofthis faith that are necessary: (1) humilityor feeling of helplessness and (2) depend-ency.

Matthew 5:3 says, “Jesus said,“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs isthe kingdom of heaven.” To be “poor inspirit” is to acknowledge one’s sinfulnessor spiritual bankruptcy. Amen!

Mark 10:25 says “It is easier for acamel to go through the eye of a needlethan for a rich man to enter the kingdomof God”. Rich people are generally nothumble and dependent; they are usuallyproud and self-reliant. Because of this, it isvery difficult for them to become poor inspirit and depend on Jesus for salvation. Now you know why you should not hinderchildren from coming home to Jesus.Amen!

By Lola SearcyMonday, February 1, 2010 marked the

beginning of Black History Month in America. It is the time of year when we as Americans, especially African Americans take time to lookback and reflect on the major contributionsAfrican Americans have made and are stillmaking to this country and to the world.

Even though February is the only monthdesignated as Black History Month, weshould remember that our history—BlackHistory, is worthy of and should be celebrat-ed every day of every year. We, (allAmericans) must remember that there couldnever have been an American history withoutBlack History! You don’t believe me?Scientist discovered the first living cell inAFRICA!! That’s right, AFRICA, the motherland. The land of our ancestors! Knowingthis, it is amazing how little AfricanAmericans know about our own history!Especially our young people. They don’tknow about the vast number of contributionsAfrican Americans made and are still makingto this country and to the world. We don’tknow because it is not taught in the class-rooms, and sadly, we don’t even teach it inour homes! Far too many parents andAfrican Americans make the mistake of rely-

ing on the educational system which is pre-dominately white to teach our children aboutBlack history. And, for the most part, theonly famous or prominent African/BlackAmericans they teach about is Dr. MartinLuther King, Jr. and George WashingtonCarver. Don’t misunderstand me, a lot if notall of the rights and privileges AfricanAmericans / Blacks enjoy today are duelargely in part to the work of Dr. MartinLuther King, Jr. And, lest we forget the morethan 325 uses for peanuts GeorgeWashington Carver discovered. Everythingfrom cooking oil to printer’s ink. He foundmore than 20 used for sweet potatoes andpecans, including synthetic rubber and mate-rial for paving highways. And I read that Ihave George Washington Carver to thank forthe make-up I wear! When AfricanAmericans take to time to learn and study ourhistory, we would really be surprised to learnjust how intelligent, creative, inventive andhard-working we are as a group of people.Contrary to popular belief, we can do much, much more than run fast, dribble a basket-ball, catch and throw a football and hit game-winning homeruns. - or sink a golf ball. AsAfrican Americans, we must take time out ofevery day to teach our children about our

beautiful culture, our rich heritage and ourhistory! We must tell them about inventorslike, Garrett Morgan who invented the stoplight and the gas mask! Tell our childrenabout Benjamin Banneker, who designed andcreated the first working clock. Mr. Bannekerwas also the principle surveyor/architect whodesigned our Nation’s capital city ofWashington, D.C. And by now, I’m sure youknow that The White House, now occupiedby our Nation’s first African AmericanPresident, Barack H. Obama, was also builtby slaves. And did you also know that TheWhite House is said to be one of the mostbeautiful and structurally sound buildings inthe world? Imagine that! You think maybeour ancestors built it to last knowing that oneday one of their decedents would live in it?

When we take the time to learn our his-tory, we would truly be amazed at what weas a people have accomplished. AfricanAmerican hands have designed, created, andinvented the tools, equipment that makes ourlives enjoyable, functioning and viable today! For instance, Harlem born Dr. Patricia Bath. She received her Medical degree fromHoward University. She is dedicated to the

Prayer ClosetPASTOR CLARENCE HENDERSON

ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST

Have you ever discov-ered the value of quiet-ness in effective prayer? We live in a world of con-fusion and endless rush-ing to and from. Eachcentury of our time hasbeen more turbulent andnoisy than the last. SinceAdam, man has allowedthe cares of life to discon-nect his soul from God.

In the midst of ageneration that had for-gotten God, Elijah

became so discouraged that he asked God totake his life. God came to Elijah in still smallvoice! When Elijah heard it, he wrapped hisface in his mantle and prayed! That is Godtalked to Elijah and Elijah talked to God. Inthe midst of the quiet time he had with God,there came a deliverance from discourage-ment and torment.

The psalmist knew the value of quietnessin effective prayer. Indicated in Psalm 37:7,“Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him.Psalm 46;10 says, “Be Still and know that Iam God.”

PAGE 6 www.dfwelitenews.com February 5, 2010

In the parable of the prodigal son, welearned that God will use every tool available(even pigs) to draw His children Home. Ourhighest desire for our children must be to seethem secure in the arms of God. Notice that inthis parable there's no mention of the fatherbetween the time the son left and when hereturned home. The father appears to have

watched his son leaveand then simply wait-ed for his return.

The father musthave known of hisson's condition whileaway. Was the fatherlazy and uncaring? Was this simply theproduct of a machoculture that didn'tshow much emotion?Or rather, was this afather who truly knew

how God's grace could work a difficult situationtoward a wonderful good?

As painful as it must have been, the fatherallowed God to complete His work - eventhough it meant his son would actually long toeat with the pigs! And yes, this father loved hisson.

When someone we love goes astray, let'scontinue to lift them up in prayer - always letthem know they are loved and continually speaka gentle message of truth. Let's NEVER give uphope, but let's allow God to finish the gloriouswork He’s begun. Let's trust Him above ALL elseand love enough to let go.

Sitting aroundthe barber shop talk-ing Black Historymonth came up, itreminded me of thetime whenUniversity ofHouston came intothen SouthwestConference. TheC o n f e r e n c eChampion alwayswent to the CottonBowl, The coach at Arkansas said “sinceHouston came to the conference they thinkthe Cotton Bowl belong to them”. Well TheNFL Probably think since the Rooney Rule theAfrican American coaches think the SuperBowl is their’s……….. oops. 3 coaches in 4years. If the Colts win that will be 2 years in arow.

On a more serious note, looking at theStates top 100 football players and their com-mitment to colleges, of the top 100 players 49either signed with out of state schools or com-mitted to sign. I think these young men needbetter guidance in picking schools. Lets forgetthe NFL there is only 32 teams and if theyreplaced the whole roster (53players) everyear, that would only be 1696 jobs. So nowlets look at a school with the future in mind.

Lets forget that your dad is a USC fan, oryou like the uniforms at Oregon, or you’re anAdrian Peterson fan, and he went toOklahoma. lets not think about how manytimes Notre Dame is on Tv, or how many guysfrom the U (Miami) go to the league.

I know its fun to go to the SEC, an beatone of your buddies that went to Texas Tech,Baylor, TCU, A&M etc. or go to Oklahoma andbeat the Longhorns .Go to Florida and beatyour friend that run on the mile relay at Baylorall of those scenarios are fine, if you’re a highround draft choice an can feed your family, like Arian Peterson and some of those otherguys that were fortunate enough to go to theleague.

It’s time these young men quit thinkingabout ESPN. And start thinking about a fami-ly, and there is a good chance they will haveone or will eventually get one. Its Fun to beatMichigan if you went to Ohio State, but howmuch fun is it to look for a job if you live inMichigan an went to Ohio State. How aboutthat laugh you had while at Oklahoma whenyou beat Texas, now that guy you gave thatdown with the Horns sign to ,is the personalmanager and you’re applying for a job and heshoot you the thumbs down sign.

$27,000 is reported to have come from Brian andCheryl Potashnik, who paid her rent, utilities andbought carpet for a house she owned on Abrams Roadin Dallas. In exchange, prosecutors alleged, Hodgewrote letters endorsing the Potashnik’s effort to getlucrative tax credits for their low-income housingdevelopment projects. Also listed in the plea docu-ments, from 2001 – 2005, Hodge had income totaling$41,465 that was derived in part, from campaign con-tributions she used for personal benefits. Hodge neg-lected to report this additional income on her federalreturn for those years.

According to published reports, as part of her pleaagreement, prosecutors agree to drop all chargesagainst her when she is sentenced.

At Wednesday’s hearing, U.S. District JudgeBarbara Lynn said she wanted sentencing to occur assoon as possible. Stating, “Ms. Hodge will have plead-ed guilty today to a felony and will still be representingthe district,” Lynn said. “I’m not real keen on thatnotion.”

While Representative Hodge will suspend her cam-paign, it does in no way seal the deal forRepresentative Hodge’s sole opponent, Dallas lawyerEric Johnson. Hodge’s name will still appear on the bal-lot, and given that fact that she has held the 100th dis-trict house seat for more than 14 years, she has some-thing Mr. Johnson does not…name recognition. Whilea felony conviction will prevent Representative Hodgefrom holding public office, there are still those loyalsupporters who could very well continue to campaignfor her, and show up on Election Day to re-elect her. Ifthat happens, and her guilty plea is accepted by thecourts, under the law, a felony conviction will disquali-fy her for the November general election. At that time, the Democratic precinct chairs in District 100, wouldpick their party’s candidate. And since there are sev-eral contested precinct chair races in the 100th district, this would make for some very interesting politicaldrama. With the suspension of the Hodge campaign,it appears to pave the way for challenger Eric Johnsonto win the March 2 Democratic primary

Meanwhile, rumors of a lack of trust and animosi-ty for Eric Johnson continue to surface among Hodgeconstituents, who accuse Mr. Johnson of not dealingwith the issues facing the 100th district, but he hasinstead focused on Representative Hodge’s legal woesrather than campaigning on a platform that benefits

the residents of the 100th district. In a statement issued Wednesday morning, Mr.

Johnson had this to say, “As a longtime resident ofHouse District 100, I want to thank Terri Hodge for herservice to our district.” “My wife, Nakita, and I will con-tinue to keep Ms. Hodge and her family in our prayers.”

Court room observers say that while Hodge chokedup several times during the half-hour hearing, as acondition of her plea deal, she agreed to cooperatefully with federal prosecutors. Attorney Jeff Kearneystated, she “shall give truthful and complete informa-tion and/or testimony concerning her participation inthe offense of conviction.” While it is not yet knownwhat information Hodge will give federal authorities, itis going to be interesting to find out just what elseRepresentative Hodge has to say.

Representative Hodge will close her district office inan orderly manner and resign at the time she is sen-tenced.

“I freely admit that I violated the federal incometax laws in this regard, and I am prepared and willingto accept the consequences of my actions”. “As a resultof my guilty plea to a criminal tax violation, I will notbe able to continue to serve in the Texas House ofRepresentatives. Therefore, I cannot in good con-science continue to seek re-election and I believe thatthe only appropriate action for me to take is to imme-diately terminate my campaign activities,”Representative Hodge stated. “I want to take this timeto express my remorse to my colleagues in the legisla-ture, my friends, and my family for my actions, shesaid in a statement. “Most of all, I want to apologizeto all the citizens of District 100 for letting them down.”“My prayer is that my successor will stand up and fightfor the people of our district in the future.” She furtherstated, “because of ongoing legal proceedings in mycase, I will not make any further public statement con-cerning this matter until the Court has assessed mysentence. I ask that the press respect my request thatmy family and I not be contacted for any further state-ment concerning this matter,” Representative TerriHodge also stated.

We will continue to follow this story and we willrespect Ms. Hodge’s wishes and give her and her fam-ily the privacy and courtesy they have asked for.

And while, we are saddened and disheartened bythe incident, our thoughts and prayers go out toRepresentative Hodge and her entire family!

We have been writingout of Psalm 137 for thepast two weeks becausethere is so much sub-stance tied into it. Whenwe sing the Lord’s song, when we affirm bystarting a decided styleof rhythm, rhyme andrhetoric we really seekto mirror somethingmore full of depth andquality. We want toannounce that some-

how, someway God will transform thatwhich I am passing through. A strangeland situation sooner or later comes toeverybody, or every person’s house. Weas Black people in this country have suf-fered through some strange land situa-tion. “They sung through difficult times’it’s our nature to hold on to our song, tohold on to our music when things andpeople threaten and defy and try todestroy our very existence. Strange landsituations will come, and they will cometo your house as well. If you thinkstrange land situations won’t come toyour house, you just keep on living. What is a strange land situation? Astrange land situation is when you get apink slip from your job after workingthere for 35 or 40 years. A strange land

situation is when you are taken to thehospital, and the Doctor tells you there isnothing he can do to save you. Now,that’s a strange land situation. A strangeland situation is when you receive a callin the wee wee hours and one of yourchildren just died, or one of them just o-deed on drugs. It’s a strange land situa-tion when one of your love ones has justleft you because of death, and you havea lonely spot in your heart. But, the goodnews is the affirmation of the sovereign-ty of God has a way of defying context. The Lord’s song goes deeper than rheto-ric and the rhythm, it goes deeper thanany sea, its transcultural, and it’s deeperthan context, deeper than culture andcircumstance. Everyone who has alreadygone through circumstances of despairwill confirm to this statement. When weget into these kinds of situations weneed to get our Bibles and turn to thesescriptures: The Lord is my light and mysalvation of whom shall I fear.” Fret notthyself because of evil does because theywill soon be cut off.” “I will lift up myeyes unto the hills, from whence comethmy help.” “We could sing, make a joyfulnoise unto the Lord, all ye lands.”

I guess you know that we havealready kept the music, we were able tosing: I’m so glad trouble don’t lastalways, and when they did not have

shoes on their feet, and ragged clothesor no clothes on their backs, they werestill able to sing: “ I’ve got a robe, you’vegot a robe, all of God’s children got arobe.” We came from a people who hada defiant faith. It looks hostility in theface and declares it can’t win. Our faithlooks diversity in the face and proclaims,we will ultimately triumph. We believethat, “I must tell Jesus, all of my trou-bles, I cannot bear the burdens alone.” Aman by the name of Thomas Dorseyfound himself in a strange land situationone day, so he picked up his pen andmirrored defiant faith in the word,“Precious Lord, take my hand, lead meon, let me stand, I am tired, I am weak,I am worn.”

For your information I believe in theNOT YET . “ When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like seabillows roll; whatever my lot, Thou hasttaught me to say, It is well, it is well withmy soul.” I know one thing. “Blessedassurance, Jesus is mine; oh what a fore-taste of glory divine; Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of His spiritwashed in His blood.” This I know, and Ican sing it in any Strange Land Situation. Can you do the same?

Let us not forget to read our Bibles.May God bless you real good, and mayHe keep you in His loving care.

Advice Column: Ask Dr. Karen Hollie-McGriffDr. Hollie,

Once again, you havewritten a response tosomeone that I think is soridiculous and narrow-minded. Why is it automat-ic that this lady if wrong forfalling for her ex-brother-in-law? It’s like you wanteverything to be one wayand anything outside ofyour norm is wrong. Wellwhat if this is the man Godintended for her to bewith? Maybe he was theone she was supposed tochoose originally. It doesn’t sound likethey were wrongly pursuing a relationshipwhile she was married. It doesn’t evensound like she purposely pursued it now.She just doesn’t want people to talk. AndI think that those people need to mindtheir business. What if your narrow-minding thinking causes her to miss outon the love that was meant for her and

she finds herself still goingin and out of bad relation-ships because she passed upon a good relationshipbecause she listened to you?Reply for Torn

Dear Reply,This is an advice column!

And what people write in for isadvice. However, they arealways free to do whatever theylike. Therefore, I hold no per-sonal responsibility for connect-ing or disconnecting them withthe “love of their life.”

But I stand by my advice; I believe that theworld is large enough that you can fall in lovewith someone other than your ex’s brother.Maybe I’m old-fashioned that way.

says 2years after these NFL guys retires 85%some say 95%, are divorced, broke, and insome cases homeless. That’s for those thatwere fortunate enough to go to the league inthe beginning.

Lets be realistic 1696 jobs don’t all comeopen every year. One year the Cowboys had12, they were called the dirty dozen. That wasa very unusual year 5or 6 per team per year

is more realistic. 192 new jobs each that’sabout 6per State. If you’re not the best inyour city chances are a little slim. I do notwish to discourage any young man or womenI just want to bring to your attention thedegree of difficulty that’s involved in football. All plans must have the degree of obstaclesinvolved, and if you have a goal and don’thave a plan you have a dream.

CITY BEATThe Church school lesson“Revealed in Rejection”Matt.13:54-58 showJesus experiencing whatalmost every pastor, preacher, and teacherhas in some way experi-enced. In the lessonJesus comes back homeand go to the synagogueto worship where Heread and expounded onthe text the people start-

ed asking how did know so much when hehad never attended any Rabbinical school, they were amazed by his miracles, after allhe had been a village carpenter for manyyears, they knew his mother, brothers andsister who still lived in Nazareth. It isstrange that people who knew you whenyou were young that grew up with you, when God change your life and call youinto ministry have a hard time acceptingyou and your ministry. To some people

you are too young, they changed your dia-pers, fed and burped you, and they werereading the Bible before you could readtherefore you can’t tell them anything. This city missed the blessings they couldhave enjoyed because they could notaccept the vessel it was in. Paul said itbest in 2 Cor 4:7”But we have this treas-ure in earthen vessels, that the excellencyof the power may be of God, and not ofus”. Our morning message was deliveredby our beloved pastor Eld. L.T.Morganfrom the subject “The I AMness of God”Ex.3:1-15. God called Moses on the backside of the desert and introduced himselfas “I Am who I Am” this translated intoHebrew is YAHWEH a name so Holy that itwas never pronounced for fear of profan-ing its Holiness. God want us to know thatnot only was he the God of yesterday buthe is God of all the tomorrows. We shouldrejoice in knowing that God is a neverchanging God.Be Blessed

Andspeaking of Doctors, where would we bewithout Dr. Charles Richard Drew? Dr. Drewstarted the idea of a blood bank and a sys-tem for long-term preservation of blood plas-ma. He found that plasma kept longer thanwhole blood. His ideas revolutionized themedical profession and has saved many, many lives!E lijah McCoy is the engineer and inventorbehind the expression, “the Real McCoy”. George Grant, an avid golfer andone 2 African American to graduate fromHarvard Dental School in 1870, received apatent in 1899 for an improved golf tee.Maybe it’s no coincidence that Tiger Woods is

such a golfing phenom! As I was researching and writing this

So thisarticle by no means even begins to scratchthe surface as it relates to the significantcontributions African Americans have made! That’s the reason our history should be cele-brated 24/7! Every day! One month ofreflection and study is not nearly enough!Black History – African American history is ahistory lesson that should be told every day!Every waking moment there is something wecan and should tell our children and our fam-ilies about who we are and from whence wecame!

For the next 3 weeks, the Staff here atElite News will share with our readers promi-nent African Americans in the Dallas-Ft.Worth area who are helping to write our his-tory! 45th Annual C.A.W. Clark Human Relations Banquet

By Jordan BlairOn Sunday, January 31 Farouk Shami, the

next governor of the state of Texas came toLuby’s on Hampton, the Elite News hosted asmall gathering of entrepreneurs, business menand women, and other pillars of the communityto introduce the next governor of Texas, FaroukShami. Mr. Shami brings with him a host of goodideas on creating jobs for Dallas and Houstonand boosting the economy for the state of Texas.Mr. Shami is a very successful business man, employing over 1,200 people and knows whatcandidate for goverit takes to run the Texas.

According to Shami, entire communitieshave been ignored for too long when it comes toeconomic growth in Texas. Farouk Shami has aplan that will ensure that every Texan has theopportunity to work hard and live the AmericanDream. Farouk has made a guarantee that nopolitician has ever made before, if his plan does-n’t create 100,000 new jobs in Texas in his firsttwo years in office he will immediately resignand pay the state ten million dollars. Accordingto Farouk, he will put his money where hismouth is because he has experience in creatingjobs and he knows how to build a business fromthe ground up. He’d like to use his experienceto re-build the economy in Texas.

Farouk also has grand ideals regarding edu-cation for our children. He believes that thefuture economic success of this state starts withensuring every single Texas child, regardless of

where they live, has access to a top notch edu-cation. Farouk believes we must stop playingpolitics with the education of our youth and startpreparing them for a future where they will com-pete globally.

“Teachers and public schools are vital to ourstate and should be treated as such. We mustprovide students the opportunities and facilitiesthey need to flourish in the 21st century econo-my. Beyond that, Farouk will fight to lower thedropout rate by ensuring our students havementors who can help them see the value inreceiving an education. Most importantly, he willdramatically increase Vocational/Technical train-ing in our secondary schools to teach kids reallife skills that can lead to a high paying job andhelp them become a productive part of the Texasworkforce.”

Elite News 35th Annual Awards Night

Dear Sorors:Alpha Kappa Alpha has prevailed in the

lawsuit filed by Joy Elaine Daley, et al.In a resounding denunciation of the

action, the Superior Court of the District ofColumbia tossed out the lawsuit and dismissedthe case. In her ruling, Judge Natalia M.Combs Greene rejected Plaintiffs' suit on allcounts and, in essence, ruled that the case hadno merit and no substance.

In essence, Alpha Kappa Alpha won!Writing in the Washington Business

Journal, reporter Melissa Castro, noted that thejudge was emphatic in her decision. "JudgeNatalia Combs Greene used just 17 pages —and several pointed words — to eviscerate theclaims of the eight AKA member-plaintiffs."

The judge also accurately characterizedthe case as being "largely about several dis-gruntled AKA members." She dismissed theevidence presented as "unnecessary and frivo-lous exhibits, arguments, counts and facts."

This victory underscores what the leader-ship has been saying all along: that this was asuit motivated by a personal vendetta againstthe leadership. The ruling confirms this.

This triumph is an affirmation of theprocess and the structure of governance thathas withstood the test of time for 102 years.

Our Founders bequeathed to us the gift of loy-alty and a mandate to never exhibit the type oftreasonous behavior that the Plaintiffs demon-strated.

We do not revel in this victory because wehave paid a dear price for it. This has been apainful saga in our history but one that couldhave been avoided had the Plaintiffs held theirvows sacred and not violated the very ritualsthey pledged to uphold.

There is a lesson in this for us and I urgethe membership to view this legal action --andits outcome - as a wakeup call. Let's use thisvictorious occasion to revisit our sacred vowsand recommit ourselves to the sanctity ofAlpha Kappa Alpha and the strength of the sis-terhood. This is what has sustained us for over100 years and will continue to serve as a stur-dy foundation as we begin our second centuryof sisterhood and service.

Now, let's get ready for our biennial con-ference in July. Let's meet in St. Louis wherewe can connect and bond with one another inthe way that has always made Alpha KappaAlpha first in service…first in sisterhood.

Sincerely,Soror Barbara A. McKinzieSupreme Basileus

Ask the Undertaker:I am a single parent with only a minor

daughter. There is no one I trust with herinheritance. I listen to your show and youmention that a minor beneficiary can not usemy life insurance for my funeral services, because they cannot enter into a contract. Ican not afford to purchase a preneed at thistime. All I have is my job insurance. I do notwant my daughter to worry about paying formy funeral expenses. What should I do?

Dear Single Parent:Thank you for listening to the show. I

commend your for being a responsible singleparent and for being concerned about yourdaughter’s future.

There is a way that you can use your lifeinsurance for your funeral service and leave aninheritance for your daughter. I recommendthat you do the following four things. The firstthing that I would recommend is that you ver-ify with your employer if your life insurancebenefit is assignable. If the benefit is assigna-ble, second thing is to decide the amount ofmoney you would like to spend toward yourfuneral service. Third thing you would makethe funeral home of your choice the beneficiaryfor that amount of you chose. The fourth thingis to make your daughter the beneficiary forthe remainder, leaving her an inheritance.
