Welcome to Foundations of English! This course is designed to help students improve their reading, writing, and reasoning skills to be academically successful. The course focus is on basic writing, revision, and reading comprehension skills. Using a combination of instructor-facilitated activities and integrated technologies, students will work to improve their ability to generate and focus ideas for essays, compose, revise and edit drafts in addition to enhancing critical reading skills.

1 LP1 Analysis In Learning Plan 1 the focus is building analytical skills by reading deeper into the relationships between ideas.

2 LP2 Inferences Learning Plan 2 introduces inferences. An inference is a conclusion drawn from evidence or implied via reasoning. A greater awareness of inferences strengthens analytical skills.

3 LP3 References Learning Plan 3 teaches how to differentiate between fact and opinion and what makes writing persuasive.

4 LP4 Sentences The ability to clearly describe people, projects, places, and events is essential to writing effective sentences. Learning Plan 4 introduces descriptive expository writing, which uses sensory imagery to appeal to as many of the five senses as possible.

5 LP5 Paragraphs Learning Plan 5 incorporates the skills from LPs 1-4 to create paragraphs, brainstorm ideas and write a descriptive paragraph using sensory imagery.

6 LP6 Essays: Intro Learning Plan 6 introduces essay format, including the thesis statement, paragraph organization and audience analysis.

Learning Plan 7 elevates essay writing skills with the outline. The essay planning process is thoroughly described: from brainstorming to outline, coherent paragraphs and finally a complete essay rough draft.

Deadline Weekly. Original posts are due during the first half of class. Replies are due by the end of classtime.

Description

Students post an original response to the discussion question presented. Each Discussion has a published grading rubric. An original response must be posted before a student can read and respond to other students’ posts. At least one reply to another student must also be posted, and must contain only positive, constructive analysis. Students must earn an average of 75% on all D2L course assignments to pass the course.

Format Directly post into each Discussion. Do not attach a document.

Description

Students complete quizzes as described in the Course Schedule. Students are allowed 3 attempts for each quiz, and will not be permitted to progress until each test is completed with at least 75% accuracy. The tests are closed book.

Final Portfolio (FP)

Value 80 points (40 points for each essay)

Deadline Nov. 10, 2013 by 11:59PM.

Description

Students submit two revised and edited essays. The Final Portfolio will be graded using the Writing Process Rubric, which is located under "Course Resources" in the Content Map. A score of 75% or above on this assignment is required to successfully pass this course.
