POWERFUL – UNLIMITED – FREE

Wind is the cheapest, most powerful, and greenestsource of energy on the high seas.

Now, with SkySails, modern cargo ships can use thewind as a source of power – not only t o lower fuel costs, but significantly reduce emission levels as well.

The worldwide patented SkySails propulsion system con-sists of three main components: a towing kite with rope,a launch and recovery system, and a control system forautomated operation.

SkySails can be installed effortlessly as an auxiliary pro-pulsion system on both new builds and existing vessels.

The SkySails propulsion system is efficient, safe, and easyto use – and the fact that wind i s cheaper than oil makesSkySails one of world’s most attractive technologies forsimultaneously reducing operating costs and emissions.

The SkySails system tows the ship using large, dy-namically flying towing kites, which generate upto 25 times more energy per square meter thanconventional wind propulsion systems. This equalsup to 2,000 kW of propulsion power in goodwind conditions.

Experience has proven, one kWh of SkySailspower costs just 6 USD Cent, or only about half asmuch as one kWh from the main engine.

REDUCE FUEL COSTS

“There is enormous, free windenergy potential on the high seas. With SkySails, we can cut fuelconsumption of our ships in halfon good days and save an averageof 10-15% in fuel every year.”

Gerd Wessels, Managing Partner -WESSELS Reederei GmbH & Co. KG

Saving fuel also saves emissions. SkySails can re-duce shipborne CO 2 emissions while decreasingthe output of such pollutants as sulfur and nitrogen

oxides at the same time. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) estimates that up to 100 million tons of climate-damaging carbon emissions can be eliminatedworldwide every year with the help of SkySailstechnology alone – an amount equivalent to 11%of Germany’s CO2 emissions.

LOWER EMISSIONS

”In a world of finite resources, environmental stewardship makesgood business sense. As one of t he world’s largest charterers ofdry bulk freight, we take this commitment extremely seriously. In addition to lowering greenhouse gas emissions, the SkySailstechnology aims to significantly reduce fuel consumption and

costs. We are very impressed with the technology and see itsinstallation on one of our chartered ships as the first part of anongoing, long-term partnership.”

Gert-Jan van den Akker,Energy, Transportatio n, and Industrial Platform Leader, Cargill

… AND ACT SUSTAINABLY

Consumers are increasingly calling for productsthat will not harm the climate, a trend that is stronglyinfluencing the rising demand for environmentally

friendly and low-emission logistics.Companies that use SkySails demonstrate agenuine commitment to achieving measurablecarbon abatement thus supporting the credibilityand visibility of their corporate sustainabilitystrategies.

INNOVATIVETECHNOLOGY -The towing kite is the core of SkySails propulsion.Together with the control pod and towing rope itforms what is called the “flying system.” Steeredby the control pod, the towing kite performs regu-lar dynamic flight maneuvers in the air ahead ofthe ship to generate propulsion.

This tractive force is transmitted to t he ship througha towing rope made of high-strength syntheticfiber. A specialized cable integrated within thisrope ensures the supply of power to the controlpod and the communication with the controlsystem on the ship.

The launch and recovery system, along with thecontrol system, are on-board components that aredesigned for easy integration and installed perma-nently on the ship.

The components are designed according to therequirements of the main classification societies.

PROVENCOMPONENTSAll deck components and the “flying system” arehoused in the bow area so as not to reduce theship’s cargo space.

The system does not impair the passage underbridges or loading and discharging operations inport since there are no obstructive superstructuresand the towing kite is recovered as the ship ap-proaches land.

SkySails collaborates with a powerful network ofleading development partners and suppliers fromthe shipbuilding and aviation industries. In es-sence the SkySails technology is a combination ofcarefully tested and proven components from bothindustries, one example being modified moor-ing winches from the offshore sector. SkySailshas been working closely for many years withDSM, the manufacturer of Dyneema®, the world’sstrongest fiber™, and Gleistein Ropes to developand manufacture the towing ropes.

The ship’s officers operate the SkySails system us-ing a control panel installed on the bridge. Thelaunch and recovery process is partly automatedand requires only a few simple actions by thecrew on the foredeck.

First, the telescopic mast raises the towing kite, which is folded like an accordion, from its storagecompartment. The mast then exte nds upwards afterwhich the kite unfurls to its full size and is ready tobe launched. The winch releases the towing ropeuntil the kite has reached its operating altitude.

The towing kite is controlled automatically at alltimes while in flight mode. An autopilot softwareensures that the towing kite flies defined patternsbased on wind direction and velocity, as well asthe speed of the ship, so that it generates opti-mal propulsion. The SkySails control panel on t hebridge keeps the crew informed at all times aboutthe system’s operating status.

SAFE & EASY OPERATION

SkySails propulsion’s multi-level security andbackup systems ensure safe ship operations.Emergency actions can be initiated from thebridge at the press of a button.

Recovery of the towing kite is performed in thereverse order as the launch: The winch retractsthe towing rope and the kite is docked onto themast. The towing kite is then reefed, after whichthe telescopic mast retracts, andthe kite and control pod are low-ered into the storage compart-ment.

The launch and recovery of theflying system each take about15 minutes.

The regular crew number is sufficient for operat-ing the SkySails system, which means that noadditional personnel costs are incurred.

SkySails offers customized training programsthat not only acquaint participants with the theo-retical principles, but use intense hands-on train-ing sessions to thoroughly practice operatingthe system. This training program fully preparescrews to manage and use the system safely andeffectively. In addition, it puts them in the posi-tion to train other crew members.

“SkySails propulsion integrates perfectly into on- board operations. The system is safe, can be usedeasily by trained crews and does not get in theway of loading or offloading. Plus the ship remainsfully maneuverable while the kite is in action.”

The SkySails system is suitable for being installedon new builds and retrofitted onto existing ve ssels.

Your personal SkySails representative, togetherwith our technical project manager, will assist andsupport you through the entire installation process.

FIVE SIMPLE STEPSTO YOUR SKYSAILS

The SkySails system is installed on the vessel at thelocation of your choice and under guidance of ourSkySails service team. The ship can remain afloatduring installation.

There are five simple steps to your Sky Sails propul-sion on board:

1 Preparation of the foundations and laying thecables and hydraulic lines.

2 Installation of the SkySails components on theforecastle and the control panel on the bridge.

3 Connection of the components to the electricaland hydraulic systems, winding the towing rope

onto the winch and stowing the towing kiteand control pod in the storage compartment.

4 Inspection and approval of the entire systeminstallation on board the ship by the owner'srepresentative. System commissioning, sea tri-als and first flight.

5 Training on the job and handing over the systemto the crew.

"Installing SkySails propulsion on our ships was remarkablyeasy. We encountered no problems integrating it into our new builds or retrofitting it. The SkySails service team proved to bean extremely dependable and competent partner during boththe installation process and ongoing system operations."
