What & Why

Do you Speak EMV?

Stands for Europay, MasterCard, and Visa. EMV is a set of global standards for smart card payments and acceptance terminals.

E-M-VFraud liability shift – Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover have

announced that on October 1, 2015, counterfeit fraud liability, which has traditionally been assumed by the card issuer, will be absorbed by the party that does not enable EMV during the fraudulent transaction.

Dip/Dipping – Instead of swiping a card, customers insert an EMV card into the POS terminal, much like an ATM. Inserting the card and removing it is called “dipping.”

Dynamic Data or Dynamic code – EMV cards generate a “dynamic code” which means the security code changes for each transaction. That way, if a card is copied or compromised, the data

cannot be used to make multiple transactions. In contrast, the data transmitted by magnetic stripe cards never changes and, once compromised, can be used over and over for countless fraudulent transactions.

Tap & Pay or Wave – When using a contactless card, there is no dipping. The card is “tapped” or

“waved” against the POS terminal. One quick tap establishes connection and verifi es authorization.

Chip & Pin – EMV payment cards are commonly referred to as “chip & pin” cards because the chip card is often coupled with a PIn code for advanced security.

Don’t let yourself become a target!

As of 2011, the payment card industry announced the EMV migration to the U.S. Over the next couple of years all businesses will be required to upgrade to EMV technology. The longer you wait, the more susceptible you are to thieves.

Here’s a quick guide to some of the terms used.

The party that is the cause of a chip-on-chip transaction not occurring (i.e. the issuer or the merchant) could be fi nancially liable for any resulting card-present counterfeit fraud losses.

Liability shift for any in-store POS fraudulent transaction on non-EMV compatible terminals.

October 1st 2015Forecourt liability shift for fraudulent transactions on non-EMV compatible terminals.

October 1st 2017

FRAUD LIABILITY SHIFT

A chip card is used at a magnetic stripe only terminal.

RULE 2

If the purchase is a counterfeit transaction the

merchant generally holds liability, because the issuer has made the investment

in chip technology to make transactions more secure while the merchant did not invest in upgrading to chip technology.

A traditional magnetic stripe card is swiped by the customer at a magnetic stripe terminal.

RULE 1

If the purchase is a counterfeit transaction the

merchant is generally not liable, just like today.

A chip card is used at a chip-enabled terminal that has

been activated by the merchant.

RULE 3

If the purchase is a counterfeit transaction the

merchant is not liable, and the issuer will continue to bear the

responsibility of counterfeit fraudulent activity.

Compared to magnetic stripe transactions, EMV transactions require 10x more data transfer and much higher back-and-forth messaging between CRInD and POS. Therefore, enhanced site wiring is required to support EMV connectivity.

PROPER SITE CONNECTIVITY

• Less noise interference• Protects circuitry against lightning• better long distance transmission

**If using 2-wire (non-twisted pair), a test should be done to determine successful connectivity. To do so, temporarily connect the dispenser with the longest run and verify connectivity via the bRCM’s webserver. If this fails, you will need to pull new twisted pair wiring.

* The bRCM and DCM are needed to covert twisted pair/2-wire to Ethernet Protocol

EMV IMPLEMENTATION PLAn

TIP: Evaluate current forecourt and POS equipment capabilities and the availability of equipment and service providers. The key thing is to conduct an age assessment of dispenser payment terminals – are they 5 years old, 10 years old, 20 years old? This may help determine which upgrades will have to take place.

Start today – It’s a Long Road1. Consider an EMV site survey to check your site connectivity and obtain all necessary equipment information.2. Conduct an age assessment on your equipment to determine what can be retrofi tted and what needs to be

replaced.3. Check with your fuel brand or network to see if they off er incentives for equipment upgrades and if they have

established a time frame for rolling out EMV-ready software.4. Work closely with your Distribution Partners to create a ‘shopping list’ to avoid manufacturing constraints and

potentially extended lead times.5. Plan a schedule with your Service Providers to avoid technician shortages.
