two facts are sufficient to account for the extreme marginal conditions in the current fiscal year 2013/14. Last fall saw the smallest potato harvest in Europe for decades, and, from the end of May 2014 in the Wietzendorf factory, we will be processing residual quantities of this crop into starch! This has by necessity been reflected in our activities on the market. Right from interim allocations to the final, current spurt to meet our budget.

A good pricing discipline has allowed the price of potato starch to peak above that of grain starch by as much as € 250. It is now a matter of continuing to stabilize the price at this level.

It remains to be seen what effect the heterogeneous solutions adopted by individual countries will have with regard to their decoupling from subsidies. The fact is that the Emsland Group, together with the two other German starch potato processors, has the worst position in Europe.

The difference of approx. € 100/t potato starch has forced us to endure significant losses of market share in non-sensitive applications and markets.

Which makes it all the more important for us to vitalize our expanded innovation center as soon as possible, so that we may implement customer innovations with the very highest levels of value-added.

The strategy for the next five years has been fixed, and it is now a question of implementation. The path must be clearly delineated to allow us to mobilize all the forces available to us.

The movement to high-quality potato products is also placing intense demands on our company. In the wake of € 40 million spent in the year 2014/15, the next four years will see a total outlay of € 80 million for the restructuring of the Group. The main focus is on the new Emsland-Food plant in Emlich-heim, which will start producing potato flakes as soon as the fall of 2014. But resources for improving cost structure and quality are also flowing into all the other plants, as well as into the further development of the sites in accordance with our corporate strategy.

The objective is to stabilize the Group’s EBIT at today´s level whilst increasing remuneration from potatoes to ensure long-term supplies of the raw material.

To do this we need our new ERP program, which must of course be fully functional. Significant progress is already discernible, and, with the go-live at the Hagenow site on 01.06.2014, all the factories will be on stream. As of the new

fiscal year 2014/15 we will be posting only in the new ERP program. We will devote the first half of the new business year to comprehensive optimization; in the second half of the year we will begin to integrate raw material supplies into the system.

We thank you for your past support and patience and would like to ask you for further input to make our processes more efficient.

The customer is at the heart of our business development; all divisions have their key accounts firmly in mind and dedicate their work to the success of our customers.

A prerequisite for this is the efficient and competitive manu- facture of high-quality products. Security of supply and high-performance logistics are also basic requirements for a business partnership in today’s world. We will only get ahead of the competition if our group of companies can work together with all the participants in the supply chain to provide a better service to our customers.

We need to align our organization and subordinate our thinking and actions to this goal!

We must find ways of compensating for the competitive disadvantage in starch; this will require us to reduce our costs. On the other hand, the dehydrated and pea-based product fields offer abundant potential for an increase in Group sales to over € 600 million in the medium-term!

Help us seize this great opportunity and make further progress under the banner of this vision: “Emsland Group - on the way to becoming a customer-oriented solution developer.“

We are, as always, grateful for suggestions arising from the following news.

Dear business partners and co-workers,

The development of faster and faster machines in recent years along with the use of special paper (lowest paper densities, highly porous paper types) and the latest nozzle application systems have led to a steady increase in the requirements placed on paper bag adhesives. As the market leader in this area, the Emsland Group decided to take this challenge head on. Based on our decades of experience, state-of-the-art develop-ment and production systems, and our close cooperation with leading machine and paper bag manufacturers, we were able to develop custom solutions for any set of needs.

After extensive testing and trials on-site at our customers pre-mises, the Emsland Group experts introduced a market-ready, highly concentrated paper bag adhesive that can be used with both all newer generation Windmöller & Hölscher (so-called

New, highly concentrated nozzle adhesive Emcol KM30 Jet successfully intro-duced to the market

Crop year 2014 is the second year in a row that members and raw material suppliers of the Emsland Group have been offered the opportunity to purchase seed potatoes directly from the Emsland Group’s raw material department. In order to meet the increasing demand on the producer side, Mr. Jan Speulman has been put in charge of planning, sales and consulting. He receives support from Mr. Christian Tieben, who is managing logistics, processing and invoicing. This is meant to ensure that the right amount of the right varieties at the correct stage of cultivation and sorting size are shipped to our raw material suppliers: both in 1,250 kg big bags and as bulk loading.

Seed potatoes are a spring business for which the months of March and April account for about 90 % of total volume. This is a very dynamic season, both exciting and hectic at the same time, in which there is a constant need to reconcile supply and demand. Every year brings new challenges.

Seed potato propagation is either being carried out by the Emsland Group itself or contracted out to VO companies in Germany and the Netherlands. The highest quality seed potatoes are grown in the north, especially in clay soils in coastal regions. The subsequent stages of growth are handled more in the interior, although here too by propa-gation farms that specialize in healthy growing conditions.

Selecting the right variety is an important matter when it comes to cultivation. On the one hand, we at the Emsland Group impose special requirements on the quality of raw material (percentage of starch and reduced sugar content). On the other hand, producers too have certain expectations that the varieties they use on their farms and fields must meet.

Variety characteristics such as resistance to nematodes, cancer, Phytophthora infestans and viruses play as importantly a role as storability, stability, safeness, and resistance to drought.

Seed Potatoes: the basis for a successful crop

The Emsland Group has set up test plots for observation, harvesting and evaluation in all growing regions in order to find out which characteristics the varieties yield in practice. Exclusivity agreements for certain varieties have been made with some potato breeders in the Netherlands and in Germany.

Our variety guidebook “Starch Potato Varieties for 2013“ provides producers with comprehensive information about each variety.

The experts at the Emsland Group are constantly on the lookout for new and interesting varieties, but at the same time these varieties must meet ever higher requirements. This is certainly not always so easy, considering that breeders need about 10 years to bring a new variety onto the market. We therefore already need to know today what will be in demand 10 years from now. This requires correspondingly foresighted planning. In addition to this research, we are also producing mini-tubers in greenhouses at the highest level. They need another five to seven years of propagation generations on the field, however, before they are ready for our producers. Producing what is in demand thus plays an important role.

Our order forms give raw material suppliers the opportunity to decide on their seed potato shipments for the next crop years. This in turn allows us to provide the propagation planning.

Although the Emsland Group seed potato supply depart-ment is effectively still under construction, demand and development are already looking quite satisfactory!

NAtIoNAl

The Emsland Group can look back on very positive develop-ment in the Employee Suggestion Program. The financial year 2012/13 saw an almost 600 % increase in the number of suggestions submitted relative to the previous year. In the current financial year, too many effective sugges-tions have been submitted throughout the Group on how to optimize the processes in the company, for example the suggestion of June 2013 at the Emlichheim facility submitted by Mr. Jürgen Velsink in the area of the wastewater treatment plant. As a result of his suggestion to switch the pH value adjustment vapor condensate in the pea working season from hydrated lime to chalk, an irritant substance was replaced with an unmarked substance. This reduced lime scale in the liner pond, leading to a reduction in the amount of cleaning work for his colleagues. This and many other creative suggestions are already leading to considerable savings and improvements in working conditions and environmental protection, which have been duly rewarded.

However, the responsible persons still see great potential in the administrative area, such as management or research and

development. In particular, there are numerous opportunities to benefit from the Employee Suggestion System in the optimization of processes and with regard to the means of communication.

For all future optimization ideas relating to your own area of work or also other facilities, you can find appropriate idea cards on the Intranet or request them from the responsible persons for the individual facilities (see below).

The Employee Suggestion System is a basic pillar of sustainable corporate development. It increases our competitiveness and thus helps to secure our jobs.

For the future, too, we hope to benefit from the creative potential of all the employees in our organization (not only that of the managers and experts) and thus further develop the subject of the Employee Suggestion System.

The topic of work health and safety has become more and more important at the Emsland Group in recent years and is now firmly anchored in the Group’s IMS (Integrated Manage-ment System). A new safety engineer, Ms. Katrin Neumann, was hired in 2013 to provide an additional impetus to further drive this topic forward. The key tasks in this are preventing work accidents, reducing health risks on the job and preventing job-related illnesses.

Work instructions are a major part of work safety. The Instructions Manager was revised as a tool to ensure that operational processes run smoothly. The following topics were added in January 2014:

• Working with ladders and stepladders• Working with cranes• Forklift operators • Healthy backs (particularly of interest for those who work

in front of computer screens)

These instructions are meant to teach behaviors that are important for work health and safety.

Following previous Works Council elections in 2010, voters were once again asked to cast their ballots on March 4th and 5th, 2014. During those two days, nine representatives were elected to form the Works Council in Emlichheim. A total of 83 % of the 387 eligible voters exercised their right to vote. Each voter was asked to cast a minimum of one and a maximum of nine votes, and the average number of votes per person was 5.2. During a previous constitutive meeting, Mr. Berthold Reiners was elected as chairman and Mr. Berthold Lammers was elected as vice chairman.

Additional steps for Work Health and Safety

Results of the 2014 Works Council Election in Emlichheim

Furthermore, Mr. Derici, an occupational healthcare profes-sional from AMZ Nordhorn, began serving as our Company Medical Officer in January 2014. He also contributes his expertise towards optimizing our work safety measures. Several employee discussions on “computer desk jobs“ were held in early March 2014. All of the participants responded very positively to the opportunity to participate in health consultation talks with the company physician. These talks are meant to promote awareness so that workers can practice healthier work habits.

In addition to the Group-wide training programs (such as the in-house Dräger training on “clearance measurements and working with the Dräger equipment“) and projects (such as “TIL-Transfer for innovative solutions“ on the topic of future-oriented personnel policies in the food industry), the Group is asking EVERYONE to help improve work safety - so that WE can all stay healthy while at work!

The other plants are also due to hold elections this year, but not all sites have held their Works Council elections yet.

On behalf of the management as well as the newly elected Works Council, we thank you for the high voter turnout. Special thanks goes to the Election Board, which did an excellent job in carrying out this election.

The Works Council will represent the interests of Emsland Group employees, making it an important committee within the corporation.

The IHK Osnabrück - Emsland - Grafschaft Bentheim Chamber of Industry and Commerce has successfully initiated the “Energy Scouts“ project in the region. The opening event at the chamber of commerce served as a platform for 35 apprentices from ten companies in the region to gather information about the fundamentals of energy technolo-gy and uncover the potential to save energy. Three apprentices from Emsland-Stärke GmbH are also taking part. By the end of the year, they will have developed and implemented their own operational energy-saving projects. Once the project has been completed, they will have the opportunity to present their results in the nationwide “Energy Scouts“ closing event in Berlin.

The “Energy Scouts“ are part of the “Energy Transition Initia-tive for Small- and Medium-sized Companies“ that has been organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) and the Federal Ministries for the Environment and Economics. “More than 15 IHKs throughout Germany are going to start

“Energy Scouts“ apprentice project

“Energy Scout“ projects this year,“ explains IHK spokesperson Juliane Hünefeld-Linkermann. She is very impressed by the project: “The apprentices learn to come to grips with the situati-on within the company, as well as recognize and implement the potential to save energy.“ In doing so, they will also motivate other employees to handle resources more carefully. As part of the opening event, speakers Norman Lentzsch from the Wirtschaftsvereinigung der Grafschaft Bentheim e. V. trade association and Carsten Mücke of Mücke Energieberatung gave examples of where to find significant potential to save energy in business. The next step will involve the apprentices carrying out interviews at their respective companies and gathering data about energy consumption. In June, lecturers will be fielding questions in a Q&A session as part of a practical afternoon held at the Career and Service Center of the Osnabrück Trade Association (BUS GmbH). The operational projects in which the apprentices develop concrete suggestions for saving energy will follow this event.

Certificate: Environmental Manage-ment System after DIN EN ISO 14001

In 2013 the Emsland Group once again received a number of comprehensive certifications as part of the group-wide implementation of IMS (Integrated Management System).

IFS Food / IFS Broker certification was acquired for the site in Hagenow in April 2014 with the integration of Mecklenburger Kartoffelveredlung into the Emsland Group.

All starch and food plants were able to re-certify according to the BRC standard in 2013.

Kosher and halal certifications were also acquired. The plant in Wietzendorf has been halal certified since 2013. The plant in Hagenow underwent a review for its current kosher certification and will apply to expand its kosher certification to all of its products in the next certification step.

The goal of establishing a matrix system as part of the environ-

Current certifications as part of IMS mental management certification was reached in 2012. The site in Wittingen is now also DIN EN ISO 14001 certified. The plant in Kyritz is expected to receive its certification this year. There will also be an Ethical Trade audit for the Emlichheim and Hagenow sites.

The audit will review the following key areas:• Working conditions • Wages and working hours • Health and safety • Environment • Management / business practices

These certifications guarantee that the Group will continue to offer first-class quality in its products and services at all production sites within the Group.

Current status of ERP system implementation

With a scheduled switch-over of the systems in the Kyritz and Golßen starch plants, the beginning of 2014 was all about ERP introduction. Following extensive and gradual preparations, as well as integration tests in which the go-live experiences from Emlichheim and Wietzendorf were also included, the modern Infor-systems were implemented successfully. In March and April 2014, the go-live continued with the food plants at the sites in Cloppenburg and Wittingen. At the same time as the switchover at the Cloppenburg plant, the accounting department at Emsland Food was also completely switched over. This makes the accounting department the first department to completely switch over. However, until all of the plants switch over, many bookings still need to be made manually.

The next challenges are also already in the starting blocks. The switchover of the Hagenow plant is planned for June 1st. What sets this apart is the deliveries to food retailers. What’s more, the switchover of raw materials procurement and the launch of the new food line in Emlichheim mean we are faced with two further major challenges.

As there is a lack of time, many elements have been postponed until an optimization phase in fall 2014. Following the last go-live, it must once again be considered which measures are required for efficient working with Blending.

Separate to the future optimization, users can already solve many problems themselves. It is often helpful here for them to exchange tips between each other. However, the key staff, key users and coordinators remain on hand to answer any questions. With continuous training courses and system optimizations, we continue to see this large project as a positive milestone in the history of the Emsland Group.

Go-live WittingenOn Monday, March 31st, 2014, the ERP team set off for Wittingen to assist with the go-live on site. Prior to this, the inventory takeover had already begun and was successfully completed in the afternoon. All interfaces were launched and were waiting to be fed with data. On the Tuesday morning at 6am, the first members of the production and logistics team were on site to initiate the production and stock control in Blending with their Wittingen colleagues. A little later, the other ERP team members came to assist in the lab and in loading.

The team members discovered optimal conditions: there was a large, well-equipped room for the team, catering was provided, and even the sun cooperated, treating the team to a pleasant 20 degrees. But the best and most important were the employees in Wittingen, who set to work with excellent training and motivation - which makes a go-live a sheer joy.

There were minor problems here and there, but it was possible to resolve them very quickly. The support from Infor and Emsland IT also provided the foundation for a good launch.

We would like to offer our express thanks to all our colleagues in Wittingen and the ERP team for their excellent, friendly collaboration!

TQM (Total Quality Management) stands for “optimizing the quality of a company’s products and services in all functional areas and at all levels with the cooperation of every employee.“ This is certainly not an easy task for a company as large and internationally active as the Emsland Group. The complex pro-cess steps and natural variations in the growth process of raw materials especially present a particular challenge in this area.

The Emsland Group has compiled a project team that will systematically address the problematic nature of this task and tackle this challenge head on. The aim of the Six Sigma DMAIC process*, which provides a number of methods and tools, is to establish another basis in addition to the already existing CIP activities to achieve fundamental and sustained process improvements. The DMAIC process helps us to fulfill a variety of project objectives:• Meeting market and customer requirements• Reducing the number of complaints• Improving customer satisfaction / enhancing customer

loyalty• Improving adherence to schedules and deadlines• Improving the product quality• Reducing production cost due to less reworking• Implementing / establishing a new, universal under-

standing of quality in the organization• Improving the flow of information and transparency

Quality that pays off - tQM

and that’s just to name a few. TQM puts the customer at the center of everything that happens - a situation that will come to reflect the relationship between the company and its customers more and more often in the future.

In line with the Emsland Group’s future strategy, the im-plementation of the TQM program is moving “away from specification – and towards process stability”. We are no longer satisfied with keeping within the specification limits - we are simultaneously striving for high process reliability with minimum variations within these limits. This is a situation that will generate a great deal of interest, both within the company and with our customers. In the end, this will require the support of the entire workforce not just the project team.

Those responsible are already working on a specific customer inquiry which requires a sustainable use of methods and tools in day-to-day business.

It is certainly going to take some time to set out the require-ments and develop the foundations; however, for the Emsland Group, quality before quantity will pay off in the long run.

INTERNaTIoNal

The surfaces of products made from fibrous materials such as wood, cellulose, plastic, textiles, or fiberglass are routinely coated in order to improve their optical, haptic, or functional properties. The materials used for this coating are often made up of pigment dispersions with additives consisting of one or more binding agents and other functional additives such as rheology agents or optical brighteners.

It may be necessary to utilize rheology agents to achieve the material´s desired viscosity, for example, or to control its water release properties. Materials widely used for this purpose inclu-de substances based on cellulose ethers or synthetic polymers.

Starches registered as utility patents to improve fibrous material coating com-pounds

We are now offering our customers an alternative to these product groups in the form of a rheology agent made up entirely of starch (100 % starch based). These starches have recently been registered as utility patents.

The proprietary starch derivatives can be dissolved without being boiled, or even dosed directly, and have a much higher level of biodegradability than conventional cellulose ethers. They exhibit excellent thickening qualities while at the same time increasing the water retention value of the fibrous mate-rial coating compounds.

The Group has two new trade fairs on the agenda for this year. For the first time, Emsland Group will be at the IFT Food Expo, one of the food industry’s biggest events. Some 22,000 visitors are expected to attend this trade fair in New Orleans from June 21st – 24th, 2014 in search of new products, tech-nologies and services.

The Fi Global Summit 2014 is a new event organized by the Food Ingredients Europe Team. An impressive list of participants and a very selective audience are a promising sign that this will be a very high level show. The Emsland Group has opened a new office to meet the growing demand in Asia and to be able to offer professional on-site service. The heads of the Emsland Group welcomed agencies and partners from different nations to celebrate the opening of the new EAFI in Bangkok, Thailand, on April 2nd, 2014. There were various presentations and talks about the branch’s positioning and focus alongside the official commencement activities. The office will serve as a customer center for tech-nical and distribution/sales matters and provide consultation and support services for customers in the region. With the “one stop shopping” positioning for potato starch, flakes and granules as well as pea and tapioca starch, the innovation focus will be on Asian food product applications. Research

and development work will also take place at the new site. One example of the R&D work being done can be found in the new generation of dehydrated potato and pea products in the Embalance® line. These products feature excellent water absorption and are low on unwanted by products like sugar, asparagine and glykoalkaloids, leading to a reduction in the level of acrylamide.

The opening ceremony included dinner and a tour of Bangkok.

With Mr. Georg Rübenkamp and Mr. Raoul Zimmermann, two important positions are being re-staffed at the Emsland Group location in Emlichheim. Mr. Rübenkamp has been working as head of financial accounting at Emsland Group since May 1st, 2014. After studying at the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund with a focus on controlling and marketing, he worked, among other things, as the head of controlling/finance at Ado Gardinenwerke GmbH & Co. KG as well as in commercial management/controlling at DTF Deutsche Textilfabrik GmbH & Co. KG. His extensive experience in the development of cost accounting for production and sales, working with foreign companies and overall responsibility for corporate budgeting give Mr. Rübenkamp all the right qualifications for his new responsibilities.

As head of financial accounting, Mr. Rübenkamp is responsible for the preparation and monitoring of monthly, quarterly, annual and consolidated financial statements. Besides the preparation of monthly reports and the optimization of existing systems, he also plans to cooperate closely with Group departments and companies.

Mr. Rübenkamp is 50 years old, married and has a daughter and a son. They live together in Papenburg.

Mr. Raoul Zimmermann has been responsible for customer service within our Group since the beginning of 2014.

New faces at Emsland Group

He primarily focuses on issues such as the definition and alignment of customer service as well as the formal and operational process. He is available both internally and externally as a contact for issues concerning cooperation and coordination. The development of standards for work optimization and representation of customer service interests are, in addition to sales support, also on his agenda.

After his training as a wholesale and foreign trade merchant and a degree in business administration, Raoul Zimmermann can look back, among other things, on several years of expe-rience in customer service management.

He was head of customer service at Citibank in Nordhorn for five and a half years and served as head of customer service at The Phonehouse Telecom in Münster for 11.5 years.

Mr. Zimmermann (49) is married and lives with his wife in Gronau-Epe. In his private life, he is an enthusiastic traveler, cook and motorcyclist.

We wish all new Group employees a great start, all the support they need and loads of success in fulfilling their responsibilities.

We look forward to working with you!

This year’s “Girls’ Day” provided a great number of school-children with an insight into professions which aim to broaden the traditional, gender-specific spectrum of career choices. “Girls’ Day” has been a compulsory career orientation module in schools providing general education since 2001.

At the future day for girls and boys, which took place at the same time, young visitors at Emsland-Stärke GmbH were also able to scale lofty heights. The schoolchildren were treated to a breathtaking view over the county during a visit to the largest potato starch silo in the world.

Apart from a general insight into the business, the boys and girls were able to learn about the various apprenticeship professions that are offered at the main plant in Emlichheim. These include occupations such as laboratory technicians, industrial management assistants, IT specialists and logistics

specialists. They were also given a tour of the company’s laboratory, the metalworking shop and the electrical work-shop and were able to try their hands at all kinds of jobs.

As is tradition, a varied and exciting day ended with a meal in the new canteen located in the social building of the Emsland Group.

The Emsland Group is proud to have staged yet another interesting “Girls’ Day”, where girls and boys were able to gain targeted, hands-on experience of technical and technology-related occupations. In doing so, the Emsland Group strengthens an early interest in sound vocational training among young people by offering a way into a professional career and at the same time offering insight into an international, forward-looking company.
