NEW LOGO

You will also notice that EMS has a new visual identity. Since taking on the remit of CMFS, Enterprise Music Scotland’s activities are more diverse than ever before, and we felt that it was a good time to refresh our logo to create a more inclusive and versatile identity for these multiple strands in a bold and clear way.

NEW WEBSITE & TOURS BOOK

As many of you will already be aware, EMS has launched a brand new website at www.enterprisemusicscotland.com. The new website has easy-to-use navigation and new features which will make many aspects of EMS easier to access and explore. We believe that this will make EMS more inclusive than ever before, and we are already seeing the benefits.

For the first time, the Tours Book will be managed and hosted online. This is an exciting opportunity for artists to reach a wider audience, and a more convenient means of submitting entries. We have responded to the demand for a more efficient and easier process, and have also added improvements such as the opportunity to include video and audio examples of work. The deadline for Tours Book entries is 21st June 2013.

As well as being sent hard copies of the book as usual, promoters will also be able to access all the Tours Book information online. We are currently compiling submissions from ensembles, and the Tours Book will be viewable online from the 29th of July, with hard copies also available around this time.

We would like to thank Becky, Allan and Raymond at Level Up for working with us to develop the new site. It was a pleasure working with them! www.thisislevelup.com

THE EMS CREATIVE EXCHANGEPROJECT SUMMARY

The EMS Creative Exchange was the first project running as part of our new widened remit. We want to proactively support chamber musicians and strengthen the chamber music sector in Scotland.

The project was made up of three sessions in which several different ensembles came together in the fantastic setting of Crear in rural Argyll. Each residential session gave ensembles the opportunity to make use of Crear’s “Space to Create” through concentrated rehearsal time, collaboration and discussions. Musicians had the chance not only to develop within their ensembles, but also to learn from others who they may have otherwise never had the chance to meet and work with. On top of this, EMS representatives were on hand to facilitate a series of ‘Creative Conversations’ to consider and discuss all our roles in how we can all work together to help benefit the future of chamber music in Scotland.

“It was interesting to hear what other people are doing to promote themselves and manage their careers. I definitely came away feeling inspired and motivated. It was also reassuring to chat with the other musicians about the things that we all find challenging.”

WORKSHOPS UPDATE

A selection from over 30 workshops which took part this past term alone and which reached over 2,000 children…

IAN PEASTON started off the second term by visiting Invergordon Academy. He entertained the young people with Violin Variations, a concert-talk about music and creativity using an electric violin, pedals and a laptop, with half of the students at the workshop attending the concert that evening!

“Just back from the school and the workshop seems to have been a great success. We are very appreciative of EMS’s support and do think that the experience of these workshops will be with pupils for a very long time, hopefully giving them a real interest in music”. – Peter Cheyne, Invergordon Arts Society

The NAVARRA QUARTET gave a masterclass to the talented string players of Aberdeen City Music School while the pupils at Campbeltown Grammar School and the surrounding primaries were treated to workshops by the KANDINSKY PIANO TRIO & CUILLIN SOUND.

The JEANA LESLIE ENSEMBLE visited St Eunan’s Primary School in Clydebank working with the whole school over the course of a day on their theme of Scottish Music. The ensemble later visited Our Lady & St Patrick’s High School to deliver workshops based on SQA concepts to all the music students with upcoming exams.

FONTANELLA QUINTET travelled to Newton Stewart to work with the local adult recorder group and to visit a primary and secondary school group before their concert that evening while TRAVELLING BY TUBA visited Moffat Academy and the local primaries.

“The musicians were top class and made the workshop relevant to all pupils. The pupils all had an enjoyable learning experience because they were treated to a very accomplished pair of musical performers.” – Beattock Primary School

Other workshops over the term have included STEVE BINGHAM performing workshops in schools around Moffat over two days, LIQUID ARCHITECTURE at Whithorn Primary School and RED PRIEST at Banchory Primary School.

RESIDENCY PROJECT UPDATE

ATHENAEUM WINDS

The Wind Quintet has had a great start to the year, taking part in a 4 day residency at Crear with Britten Sinfonia leader, Jackie Shave, performing at PLUG festival and embarking on the first few dates of their EMS subsidised tour, taking in Westbourne Music and Cottiers Chamber Project!

“The past year has provided us as group with many great opportunities and experiences, in particular working intensely with Jackie Shave during our first residency at Crear. Through her innate musicality, we were able to further our musical ideas and develop our group sound. Preparation is well underway for the rest of our scottish tour, having already performed at Merchant House and at the Cottier’s Music festival, and of course for our second residency with the acclaimed guitarist Allan Neave.”

MAXWELL QUARTET

The Quartet is in their second year of the Residency Project and has a new commission, residencies in Crear and a Scottish Tour to look forward to! We are delighted to announce that London-based, Scottish composer Anna Meredith has been commissioned to write a new work for the Quartet. Anna has been Composer in Residence with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, RPS/PRS Composer in the House with Sinfonia ViVA, the classical music representative for the 2009 South Bank Show Breakthrough Award and winner of the 2010 Paul Hamlyn Award for Composers. The Quartet is very excited to be working with Anna on this new work and will be performing it during their forthcoming EMS tour:

AREA PRESENTATIONS 2013

This year for our Area Presentations, Enterprise Music Scotland visited Easterbrook Hall in Dumfries on 19th April, the Tolbooth in Stirling on 26th April and Eden Court in Inverness on 27th April. The day was an amalgamation of presentations and open discussions on all of the new updates and opportunities being received and offered by EMS.

EMS’ Chairman Roy Alexander opened the presentations with the latest funding reports, restructure of management and expressed his enjoyment in his new position. The promoters had the opportunity to hear from General Manager Paul Tracey who accounted all of the updates on our staffing, funding and new extended remit. He discussed EMS’ partnership in the Promoting Equalities Programme and relayed the exciting updates on the Residency Project, Traditional Arts, new website and the success of the Creative Exchange at Crear. Lesley-Ann Smith, Education & Projects Officer, gave a report on the increased number of workshops and participants reached this year, the provisional date for National Chamber Music Day and a general overview of Music Education Matters: EMS’ first music education conference planned for 2014. Promoter James Munro finished off the day by discussing the club evaluations.

“...It is so good to see all the educational work going on and I was all fired up about what Lochaber might be able to have this year...” – Clare Reynolds, promoter

The visits were a great success reaching 42 promoters representing 28 clubs. It gave EMS the opportunity to meet and spend the day with the promoters and for the promoters to engage with other music clubs. Thank you to all who attended and we hope to see even more of you there next year!

“The group of us who attended from Gatehouse Music Society would like to say how useful we found the Area Presentation and the update on all that is happening. We appreciated the opportunity to meet Roy Alexander, the new Chairman of EMS and to talk with the representatives of the other Societies.” - Jean Green, promoter

NEW DIRECTORS

EMS welcomes two new directors to the board, Catherine Earnshaw and Stewart Aitken.

Catherine has worked for Children’s Classic Concerts since 2005 and was appointed General Manager in 2010. Heavily involved in chamber music, she is a member of Arctic Winds, the Scottish Wind Ensemble and a founder member of the Scottish Reed Trio.

She enjoys the challenges of being a performer and a promoter and the unique perspective that this offers.

‘I am delighted to be joining the Board of EMS. Many of my first professional performing experiences were on the EMS circuit and chamber music is such an enjoyable and inclusive way to make and share music. Now that I am also a promoter, I realise how lucky we are as musicians and audiences to have an organisation like EMS championing live chamber music in Scotland and I am looking forward to becoming more involved’

Stewart works in Aberdeen as CEO/Artistic Director of Aberdeen International Youth Festival. His interest in theatre and the performing arts started through youth theatre and after school he trained in acting at Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh. Stewart worked for many years as an actor, workshop leader and director with many Scottish companies both professional and community-based including; Scottish Opera, Byre Theatre

Our Projects Assistant, Sophie Gordon, is moving on to pastures new, taking up a position with the NSPCC. We would like to thank her for all her hard work over the last 9 months, in particular her fantastic work on the new website, the Creative Exchange project and the creation of our new logo and marketing materials. She has been a real asset to EMS and a pleasure to work with. We will miss working with her but wish her all the best in her new exciting opportunity in London.

As a result of this we are currently recruiting a new Projects Assistant and Intern who we hope will be in place to take up their positions in July.
