This report describes the outcomes of a workshop with RJ practitioners, other stakeholders in criminal justice and social innovators. The aim is to understand how a digital tool could help engage young victims on Restorative Justice.

OVERVIEW

The workshop was conducted by Livework on behalf of the Restorative Justice Council and involved participants from various backgrounds including social innovators, Ministry of Justice, NESTA, RJ practitioners and two young offenders. Discussion and activities were organised around young victims in order to understand victims’ needs after a criminal incident and opportunities for a digital tool to help them.

BACKGROUNDEmpowering young victims with digital tools

Livework © 2015

In previous engagements with the Restorative Justice Council, we worked with frontline youth workers and police officers to gain an understanding of the specific needs of young victims of crime and find opportunities to better engage them in Restorative Justice.

One of the primary findings from the previous engagement, was the need for better communication channels with young people and the digital tools to support them.

Digital solutions could provide a central point of reference for a victim, enabling them to understand what is going on at all times and stay in control of their case.

The aim of this workshop was to understand the role and scope of such digital tools.

Anna’s journeySERVICE INTEGRATION

Anna was a victim of a possible criminal incident, but was not sure what she could do about it.

By using the self-support assessment tool Anna discovers that what happened is actually a crime, and decides to report it to the police.

On the victim support social media channel, Anna and her family learn more about what she is able to do and what her rights are.

Anna is able to follow her process online, and see what has been completed and what steps are left to do.
