Dear Colleagues and Partners: The success of our organization ultimately depends on our people meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs.

Our people are bound together by a sense of purpose which goes beyond just doing their jobs. At Esco, we design, manufacture, sell and service life science tools which have the potential to enable researchers to make the world a better place. Although we are not the only company in our industry, let us remember every day that by doing our work diligently, we are in a small way contributing to the advancement of human kind.

On March 19, 2014, SEFA held a dinner reception at The Fairmont Hotel in Dubai, UAE to present an award to Campus for Research Excellence And Technological Enterprise, (CREATE) Singapore as the 2013 R & D Lab of the Year.

During the event, SEFA grabbed the opportunity to recognize efforts of its members. The Sales and Technical Manager for Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) region received the award in recognition to Esco’s participation in the CREATE project. Esco provided its most advanced products to equip laboratories in CREATE that will help boost success of their research projects.

Esco products intensify cancer research around the world with their advanced features ensuring that every experiment is accurate by providing comfortable and safe environment for the researchers. These products include Labculture® Biological Safety Cabinet that was featured in the recently concluded event sponsored by Analis Belgium, one of Esco’s distributors in Europe. The event aims to receive donations that will fund researches against cancer.

This is not the first time that Esco’s products have been used to aid cancer research. Two of the many top institutions that uses Esco’s Biosafety Cabinets are the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research located in Maryland, USA, using 128 units of Labculture® Biosafety Cabinets, and the Sanofi’s Global Cancer Research Center in Massachusetts, USA where 47 Labculture® Reliant Biosafety Cabinets are installed. These facilities have chosen Esco’s cabinets for their unique features that deliver safety, efficiency, reliability and ergonomics.

Cancer is one of the most fatal illnesses with 14.1 million cases around the world in 2012. This number is expected to increase to 24 million in 2035 according to the World Cancer Research Fund International. There were estimated 8.2 million deaths, 126 cancer deaths for every 100,000 men in the world, and 83 for every 100,000 females. This is the main reason why there is a worldwide continuous research about various types of cancer and how to beat them.

Researchers in Singapore and Sweden have come up with a way to harvest and grow human embryonic stem cells without killing the days-old embryo they come from.

This new method is considered a major breakthrough since embryonic stem cell research has been a highly controversial issue that it raises serious ethical question about the beginning of life. This will also allow scientist to produce unlimited high-quality, uncontaminated cells that can used in the clinic, taking stem cells a step closer to the time when they can be harnessed to replace damaged cells and cure serious illnesses.

Professor Karl Tryggvason of Sweden’s Karolinkska Institutet and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore headed the research and together with colleagues at Karolinska, developed a cocktail of laminins which make the stem cells feel at home in the laboratory.

Specific types of these fibrous proteins are normally found together with stem cells in the embryo as it starts developing.

Growing the stem cells on laminins meant that they thrived and, within a few days, researchers had culture plates full of 99% pure embryonic stem cells.

This paved the way for the team’s second breakthrough: Because the laminin environment was so “fertile”, the group was able to create a stem cell colony from a single cell taken from the eight-cell embryo.

Taking just one cell from each surplus in-vitro fertilized embryo means that it can be re-frozen and implanted. A similar procedure is already done during pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, where tests are done on a single IVF embryo cell to uncover genetic diseases, said Karolinska Institutet. If no mutations are found, the embryo is then placed in the woman’s uterus.

This breakthroughs bring stem cell one step closer to being used in treating degenerative illnesses such as Parkinson’s

and Alzheimer’s disease and may even be the cure to cancer and AIDS.

In fact, Karolinkska Institutet and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore, the two involved organizations in this particular breakthrough have purchased large quantities of Esco’s Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) that may have aided them in this recent scientific discovery.

Reinforcing biosafety awareness in Egypt

Esco’s safety awareness education program

Esco held a one day seminar on March 30 at the Children’s Cancer Hospital Egypt 57357 in Cairo which aims to educate and inspire each participant in working comfortably and safely in their laboratories. The discussion focused on the proper and safe use of Biosafety Cabinets in Clinical Pharmacies. It was attended by clinical pharmacists both from within the hospital and other medical facilities around Egypt. The Sales and Technical manager for Esco Middle East headed the main presentation and Q&A sessions. All attendees were very interactive and many follow-up meetings were held the following weeks. Due to the success of this event, Esco is planning to conduct more seminars around Egypt this year.

Esco Lifesciences (Thailand) Co., Ltd. has been conducting a series of seminars, trainings and workshops through its Esco’s Safety Awareness Education Program. This program aims to promote understanding in biological safety and chemical fume hazard containment in hospitals, universities, research centers, private laboratories and pharmaceutical companies in Thailand. 500 participants joined the event including those from Mahidol University, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mae Fah Luang University, Olic (Thailand) Co., Ltd., Chulalongkorn University and Kasetsart University.

Esco has imparted substantial information that made this event successful, memorable and helpful. In fact, Mahidol University, one of the top medical and science research universities in Thailand, became interested in making this event as one of their annual activities. Due to responses like this, expect that Esco will continue to do even more beneficial activities as such, to ensure operator, product and environmental safety, and to uplift awareness laboratory safety in the country.

Esco will not get tired of supporting their dealers around the world. During the recent Arablab trade show at Dubai, Esco representatives grabbed the opportunity to hold a meeting with its dealers. This activity was headed by our South/Eastern Europe Business Development Manager together with the MENA Region Sales and Technical Manager and the Product Specialist for Thermostatic Products.

All the participants enjoyed the presentation and product updates, and are grateful with the opportunity of having the time to mingle and meet their business partners in MENA region. This has also been an opportunity for Esco to meet new dealers to continuously expand their reach and share their expertise around the world.

Pittcon 2014

Esco returned to exhibit once again at Pittcon this year, not missing the opportunity to be a part of a must-attend event for laboratory scientists around the globe! In Chicago, IL at McCormick Place on March 3-6, 2014, approximately 100 laboratory professionals had the chance to see and explore Esco’s Biological Safety Cabinets, ULT Freezers, CO2 Incubators, and Food Safety Cabinet.

By far, the product gaining the most interest at the booth this year was the ULT Freezer. The National Director for Sales filmed a product piece courtesy of Technology Networks. The show was a tremendous opportunity for the North American market to become familiar with the ULT Freezer right before it becomes available in the region.

Arablab 2014

ARABLAB is one of the largest laboratory trade fairs in the world with 10, 874 visitors from 99 countries meeting 812 exhibitors. It connects people from all over the world and showcases the latest laboratory and instrumentation equipment from all the leading manufacturers.

Esco, being the leader in the development of laboratory equipment solutions, exhibited its latest products on March 17-20, 2014 at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. These products include biological safety cabinets, ULT freezers, laboratory refrigerators and freezers, PCR cabinets, and laboratory incubators and ovens.

Esco conducted workshops and one-on-one meetings to those very interested customers to share its expertise in equipment design and to impart additional knowledge that will ensure laboratory safety. These activities attracted more than 250 visitors and some even bought the products on display.

We thank all the people who supported us during the event especially those who visited and took part in the success of this activity. Esco is certainly looking forward to being part of this exhibit next year and we hope to see you again.

Analytica 2014

Despite a pilot strike, visitors from around the world flocked to the trade-fair centre in Munich from April 1-4 for the 24th Analytica. The trade fair for laboratory technology, analysis and biotechnology attracted more than 35,300 visitors to Munich.

Analytica 2014 was a huge success for Esco and a great chance to showcase the new ULT temperature freezer and software as well as the latest microbiological safety cabinets. Analytica is our biggest European show, and we love the opportunity to show customers, press and the general public our latest products.

Among the products on display included the eSafe® Biological Safety Cabinet and the Lexicon® II Ultra Low Temperature Freezer.

Pharmaconex2014

Pharmaconex, the leading industrial pharmaceuticals event in North Africa and the Middle East, held at Cairo International Convention Center on April 1-3, 2014, was participated by Etico Scientific, Esco’s exclusive agent in Egypt. The booth has been the place for workshops conducted by the Esco team. They were visited by current and potential new customers who enjoyed viewing and inquiring about the exhibited Esco products. Among the displayed units are the Airstream® Biosafety Cabinet, Airstream® Vertical Laminar Flow Cabinet, Frontier® Acela Fume Hood, Isotherm® Laboratory Incubators and Ovens and CelCulture® CO2 Incubator. The success of this event signifies that Esco is truly recognized in every part of the world.

Interphex2014

INTERPHEX (International Pharmaceutical Expo) is the single source for complete biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical manufacturing solutions to confidently process all dosage forms for life-enhancing drugs.

Esco’s Pharma division exhibited at Interphex 2014 for the first time ever this year at the Javits Center in NYC, NY on March 18-20. The company’s first experience as an exhibitor at Interphex was a tremendous success! It was the first opportunity the public has had to see our latest pharma products. Over 100 people stopped by the booth to take a closer look at the General Processing Platform Isolator, Containment Screen, and Weighing and Dispensing Containment Isolator. Esco’s Pharma team was met with great interest and compliments!
