Highway improvements are underway in the GTAOntario is making major improvements to
the province’s highways, roads and bridges, which is supporting more than 20,000 con-struction jobs and making travel easier for families and businesses.
Key highway improvements in the Greater Toronto Area include:• Replacing pavement and repairing 14
bridges along Highway 401 westbound col-lector lanes from Keele Street to Kipling Av-enue in Toronto.
• Repairing six bridges within the Highway 401/400 interchange in Toronto.
• Repairing three bridges along the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) in Hamilton.
• Resurfacing six kilometres of Highway 401 from Renforth Drive to Highway 410 in Mississauga.
• Repairing eight bridges along Highway 403 – four in both in Mississauga and Burlington.
“Our government is committed to im-proving Ontario’s infrastructure across the
province,” said Minister of Transportation and Minister of Infrastructure Glen Murray. “These projects will create jobs, strengthen the economy and help keep goods and people moving for years to come.”
Investing in modern infrastructure is part of the government’s plan to create jobs, help Ontario seize new opportunities for economic growth and help people in their everyday lives.
QUICK FACTS• If passed, the 2013 budget proposes an in-
vestment of more than $35 billion toward infrastructure over the next three years,
which would support over 100,000 jobs on average each year.
• More than 4,000 jobs will be created or sus-tained in central Ontario during this year’s construction season.
• Ontario has 16,900 kilometres of provincial highway which, placed end to end, would span Canada twice.
• Ontario uses new technology and greener construction practices whenever possible, including recycling existing pavement, us-ing recycled and shredded tires for bridge embankment fi ll, and rapid bridge replace-ment, which can reduce a year of traffi c de-lays down to two days. ●

Build a stylish business wardrobe The transition from college student or stay-
at-home mom to full-time professional re-quires a number of changes. Those changes include updating your wardrobe to give it a more professional feel. Clothing that’s accept-able for a jaunt to the store or a night out may not be appropriate for the offi ce.
Just what constitutes a professional ward-robe has changed over the years, and the guidelines for such attire are no longer as fi rm as they once were. But it still behooves a woman to add some classic, professional pieces to her closet. While skirts and panty-hose may no longer be mandatory, dressing conservatively and cleanly in an offi ce envi-ronment is always a safe bet.
In order to achieve a wardrobe transforma-tion without breaking the bank, the fashion experts at Marie Claire advise adding sepa-rates to build around a base suit. Find a suit that is fl attering to your fi gure and make it a workplace staple. Then purchase coordi-nating pants, sweater sets, shirts, another skirt, and accessories that can be mixed and matched with elements from the suit to create different looks. If your budget allows, pur-chase another suit in a different color so you can continue to build wardrobe possibilities.
When selecting base pieces, opt for neutral colors of tan, gray, black, and blue so that these items can be worn repeatedly without being noticed. Accessories and blouses can offer pops of color when necessary. A nice handbag or pair of shoes can quite easily add color to an otherwise monotone ensemble.
When selecting items from the rack, look for those that fi t well but aren’t too con-strictive or racy. Inquire with your new em-ployer’s hiring manager or human resources
department to fi nd out if the workplace has any restrictions on wardrobe. There may be employee guidelines, particularly in certain industries, such as law or education. If no
such restrictions are in place, keep skirts to knee-length and avoid particularly low-cut tops. Save more revealing items for nights out with friends.
Many employers have adopted dress-down days as perks for their employees. Although you may be invited to dress more casually, avoid dressing for a day at the beach or hanging around the house. Opt for trou-ser-style jeans that are free of rips and embel-lishments. If athletic shoes are allowed, make sure they are clean and not the pair you wear while tending to your garden. Avoid graphic T-shirts that feature potentially offensive or suggestive messages. In more conservative companies, dressing down may be opting for khakis instead of suits. It is important to know the difference.
Women who are adding to their wardrobes can include these all-time business staples.• Classic black pump shoes.• Crisp, button-down white shirt.• Fine-knit sweater in a bright color.• Camisole or shell in a neutral color to wear
under blazers.• Cardigan in black or white that can be worn
over tops or dresses.• Fitted, sleeveless dress that can be paired
with a suit jacket or cardigan.• Straight-hemmed skirt in a neutral color.• Flat-front black, gray and tan pants.• Neutral-colored wool coat and a rain jacket.
Over time, women can add to their ward-robes as budgets allow and they learn more about what is acceptable at their places of hire. ●

TO SET UP AN INTERVIEW CALL:
The Ontario government is launching the country’s fi rst microloan fund to help social enterprises – businesses that have a positive social, cultural, or environmental impact while generating revenue – create more jobs and strengthen local communities.
“Ontario’s social enterprises help create a vibrant and diverse economy with more opportunities for people of all abilities and backgrounds,” said Minister of Economic De-velopment, Trade and Employment Dr. Eric Hoskins. “Ontario is proud to work with so-cial enterprises to address the social, environ-mental, cultural and economic challenges no government can solve alone.”
The province has partnered with the Cen-tre for Social Innovation, TD Bank Group, Mi-crosoft Canada, Alterna Savings, KPMG and Social Capital Partners to launch the Ontario Catapult Microloan Fund. Under the fund, social enterprises that help solve a social, en-vironmental, cultural or economic problem, such as youth unemployment, may qualify for a loan of $5,000 to $25,000 and support services like mentorship.
“This microloan fund is an important step in accelerating the work of social entrepreneurs across Ontario,” said CEO for the Centre for Social Innovation Tonya Surman. “The Cen-tre for Social Innovation is delighted to bring our vision, experience and track record to this emerging collaborative of partners dedicated to building a pipeline for social enterprise.”
Ontario is also launching a new Offi ce for Social Enterprise led by Special Advisor
Helen Burstyn. The offi ce will promote social entrepreneurship across Ontario, partnering with the private, not-for-profi t and public sectors to coordinate and expand the tools available to social entrepreneurs.
Providing the right climate to attract in-vestment, create jobs and grow the economy is part of the new Ontario government’s plan to build a prosperous and fair province for all.
QUICK FACTS• The Ontario Catapult Microloan Fund is
open to Ontario-based social enterprises and will begin accepting applications in June. It will be managed by the Centre for Social Innovation.
• An example of a social enterprise is To-ronto’s Evergreen Brick Works, which uses revenue generated through paid activities, donations, event rentals, and even onsite parking meters, to deliver accessible and in-clusive community programs that bring na-ture back to cities –improving the environ-ment and promoting health and wellness.
• Ontario’s 2013 Budget introduced the govern-ment’s Youth Jobs Strategy to help more young people fi nd jobs or start their own businesses, while helping employers fi nd the skilled work-ers they need to thrive in the global economy.
• The government is holding consultations on the Youth Jobs Strategy across the prov-ince throughout May and June.
• Ontario has created 401,900 jobs since June 2009, exceeding the number of jobs lost in the recession by 136,100. ●
