Whenliftingkeepyourbackstraightbytucking inyourchinandliftwiththestronglegmusclesnot theweakerbackmuscles.Alwaysaskforhelpliftingheavy,awkwarditemsandwhenpossible,usemechanicalassistancetomoveheavyitems.Remember:• Bendyourknees– notyour waist– whenpickingupa

heavyobject.• Liftwithyour legs– notyourback.Keepyourbackas

straightaspossible.• Avoid twistingyourbody.• Avoid liftingobjectshigherthanchesthigh.

Liftingpigscanbeaverydifficulttaskastheycansometimesweighjustasmuch,ifnotmore,thanyou.When liftingpigstherearespecificguidelinesyoushouldfollow.Forpigsweighinglessthan40poundsdo thefollowing:• Positionyourselfparalleltothepigyouarelifting.• Secureyourgripon theoutsidelegwiththehandyouare

usingtolift,andusethesecondhandon theother legifthepigisheavy.

• Usethefrontlegsofthepigtohelpsupport someoftheweightuntilthepigisinaverticalposition.Thenliftthepigstraightup toclearanygates.

• Liftthepigwithyour legsandarms,NOTwithyourback.

Don’thesitatetoaskaco-worker forhelpifyou thinkanobject istooheavy toliftyourself.Thisisnotasignofweakness.Itshowsthatyouwanttobesafe.
