Standing still means taking astep backwards – in other words, change is the only constant.

For all businesses, a period of dramatic technological development, rapid-ly changing market conditions and increasingly globalised competition, mean developing at an even faster rate. Changes and adjustments are besteffected pro-actively, i.e.by looking forward, and not reactively, i.e. throughbeing compelled by circumstances – which is usually too late.We are delighted to inform you about the latest developments and newtargets at TORNOS-BECHLER, based on the pro-active corporate strategyof the TORNOS Group.

Change of shareholder guar-antees TORNOS-BECHLER ad-ditional funds to secure thelong-term success of thecompany

The change of course put into ef-fect three years ago by TORNOS-BECHLER completely transfor-med the company. For our cus-tomers,this transformation is mostnoticeable by the new DECO2000 and MULTIDECO productlines. Internally, it has meant anentirely new production strategy, associated with large investmentsin infrastructure and new meansof production. The result was anunexpectedly large rise in turnoverfor the TORNOS Group fromCHF 169 million in 1996, to CHF290 million in 1998.

The necessary investments werefunded exclusively from the com-pany’s own resources, i.e.withoutadditional bank loans or extra con-tributions from the shareholders.

In order to put into effect the nextphase of development of theTORNOS Group, it was clear thatadditional finance would have tobe pumped into the Group, sincethe potential for self-financing hadalready been relatively heavilyutilised.

In Doughty Hanson & Co, a lead-ing international investment groupin Europe,TORNOS-BECHLERhas found a new principal share-holder, which will support thecompany by carrying on the rapidand sustained growth and contin-uing to promote the developmentof new products with new tech-nology.Modernisation of the meansof production and renewal of theinfrastructure can be continued asplanned. Measures permanentlyto improve the customer andspares service can be speeded up.

The DECO product familycontinues to grow – the mostimportant new products inbrief

The DECO 2000 family is com-pleted

Up to now, we have been able tooffer you a graduated programmeof DECO 2000 automatic lathesin the diameter range of 7mm,10mm,20mm (26mm) and 26mm(32mm). (The figure in bracketsindicates the maximum bar ca-pacity, including bar preparation)

We are pleased to be able to usethis issue of the DECO Magazineto introduce an important editionto the DECO 2000 automaticturning lathe family:

The MULTIDECO family isgrowing

With respect to multi-spindle au-tomatic lathes,we have, for the firsttime, applied the DECO conceptto the MULTIDECO 26/6, the 6-spindle automatic lathe with upto 26 mm bar capacity.

We have the pleasure of intro-ducing the latest offspring of ourmulti-spindle lathe developmentto you in this issue. We wish to putforward the evidence that new di-mensions are achievable in mul-ti-spindle applications, even in thesmaller diameter range, with re-spect to flexibility and precision, without sacrificing productivity. We provide the proof in the formof the 6-spindle automatic lathesfor a bar capacity of up to 20 mm:

The TB-DECO programmingsoftware is getting quicker andsimpler

Release 5.0 sees the first funda-mental revision of the TB-DECOprogramming software.Significantpoints of criticism and suggestionsfrom users have been taken intoaccount in this revised version. The changes in Release 5.0 can besummarised in three key words:

TB-DECO 5.0 – quicker, simp-ler, new functions

“Renouveau I” is followed by“Renouveau II”

Based on the corporate strategy andgeared to the new world marketsituation, which is characterised byever shorter demand cycles and glo-bal competition, an internal pro-cess of change and renewal, vitalto the company’s survival, was in-troduced at TORNOS-BECHLERin 1995. This programme, whichconsisted of a large number ofindividual projects was called“Renouveau“, or as we now call it,“Renouveau I“ and was comple-ted at the end of 1998.

‘As a reminder, the main objectivesof “Renouveau I“ were:

◆ Renewal of the product range.

◆ Improving the flexibility of thecompany so that it is better ableto react quickly to market chan-ges.

◆ Improving productivity andquality.

◆ Reducing the amount of capi-tal tied up.

◆ Renewal of the infrastructure.

◆ Generation of cash flow forthe future development ofTORNOS-BECHLER.

Because standing still means takinga step backwards, because the un-derlying conditions continue tochange and because the potenti-al of the TORNOS Group is far

from being exhausted, we havecreated a new programme entit-led: “Renouveau II”.

The principal aims of “Renou-veau II“ are:

◆ To reduce even further thethroughput time from recei-ving the customer’s order tosuccessful installation of themachine at the customer’s pre-mises. – On the one hand, wewant to be able to react morequickly to rapidly changing mar-ket needs and, on the other, toreduce the lead times for ourcustomers to a minimum.

◆ To cut costs and hence furtherimprove the price-to-benefitratio of our products for ourcustomers. – Because the pres-sure on our customers to pro-duce turned parts more quick-ly, precisely and cheaply is be-coming greater all the time, wehave to make correspondingimprovements in the price-to-benefit ratio of our products.

◆ To manufacture all strategicparts in-house. – This shouldimprove faithfulness to dead-lines and the quality of ourown products and increase thenet product of TORNOS-BECHLER.

◆ To improve the quality andspeed of information flow in theTORNOS Group. – At the fo-refront is the introduction of theSAP software and Intranet, aswell as the extension of the In-ternet range.

◆ To improve reaction time andquality and to expand our ser-vices to our customers. – We areaware that the range and qua-lity of our services have notkept pace with the dramaticgrowth of the company. We arenow specifically concentratingon these areas.

◆ To have the ability to financecontinued qualitative and quan-titative growth. – An essentialrequirement if the long-termsuccess of the company is to besecured.

We would like to thank all ourcustomers for the confidence theyhave shown in us again and again.Their loyalty is a matter of the grea-test importance to us. In the end,all the measures we take are in-tended to make us a better andmore capable partner. This means, that we intend to offer our custo-mers first class products and ser-vices at commercially attractive pri-ces which create for the customerthe competitive advantages nee-ded to secure their own long-termfuture.

The mechanical design of 13 mm-capacity DECO 2000 is com-pletely new and its elements meetmarket requirements. The ad-vantages of the new design in-clude, in addition to the tradi-tional advantages of the DECOconcept, better accessibility andsimplified setups.

The 13mm-capacity DECO 2000benefits fully from the experienceof the previous DECO 2000 au-tomatics, i.e. it has the same mainfeatures such as:

◆ developed kinematics

◆ PNC-DECO parallel numericcontrol

◆ TB-DECO programming soft-ware.

Its specification includes 10 axeswith end-working attachment and

independent pickoff spindle. Itcan accommodate up to 20 tools,15 of them driven and can beequipped optionally with C1 andC4-axes for main and pickoff spin-dles respectively.

Based on the same principles asits predecessors, the13mm-capacity DECO 2000 works witha new version of the TB-DECOSoftware which takes full advan-tage of the power of the modern32 bit operating systems (Win-dows NT,95,98,2000) with 50 %to 200 % faster computing speeds.

The TORNOS-BECHLER expertswill be there in Paris EMO, Hall5,Stand B16, standing by to showyou the new machine in detail.

We are looking forward to pre-senting our innovations and puttingour case regarding the solutions wecan offer modern industry.

Unfortunately,at the time of print-ing this magazine,we did not havea schedule of those who will beavailable at the stand. This list willbe available on the Internet fromthe 25th April on www.tornos.ch(where a surprise will also awaityou).

Modern small parts turning theTORNOS-BECHLER way, inother words, the “DECO 2000concept”, will provide you withnew dimensions with regard todiameters, working methods andpossibilities and will also help youconquer new ground, thanks tothe coherent range of machineswhich is constantly being extend-ed.

Welcome to Paris and see yousoon...

You will be welcomed at the standby representatives of TORNOS-BECHLER Moutier and of all itssubsidiaries (Germany, England,France, Italy, Spain and the Unit-ed States). Some of our represen-tatives and agents will also be pre-sent, providing you with the op-portunity for direct discussion.

A new addition is the 13 mm-capacity versionof DECO 2000.

This new machine will be launched by TORNOS-BECHLER duringthe EMO in Paris The machine is based on the DECO 2000 design, already acclaimed as a lathe classic, combining in one machinethe advantages of a cam-controlled machine with those of a CNC.It has been long awaited, but now with these advantages it meetsthe expectations of all those in bar machining of up to 13 mm or16 mm diameters, the latter requiring bar preparation.

The extraordinary versatility ofthe MULTIDECO, (thanks to theDECO 2000 concept) with itshigh production rates, is highlyregarded on the market:

The need to:

◆ reduce the length of productionruns

◆ increase precision requirements

◆ provide a practical, customisedknow-how

have been fully realised in theMULTIDECO.

The MULTIDECO system replacesmechanical cams with virtual elec-tronic cams which allows profitablemedium-size runs. With change-overs considerably shorter thanfor the cam-controlled lathes,sim-ilar production rates and turnedparts being of a very high preci-sion, the MULTIDECO family fitsthe current trends perfectly.

Based on the same principles asthe MULTIDECO 26/6 (26 mmcapacity, 6 spindles), the MULTI-DECO 20/6 (20 mm capacity, 6spindles) features 18 NC axes with

the parallel PNC-DECO control(including five numeric compoundslides).

The MULTIDECO 20/6 is the per-fect solution for a flexible 20 mmmultispindle.

While benefiting from the ad-vantages of the DECO 2000 con-cept and design (ergonomics,pro-gramming in hidden time off themachine,energy-optimisation,just-in-time motions, etc.),this new ma-chine takes full advantage of thepower of modern operating sys-tems (Windows NT,95,98,2000)

TB-DECO 5.0

Besides the new machinesshown at the EMO, TORNOS-BECHLER S.A.presents a new re-lease of the programming soft-ware for DECO 2000 and MULTI-

DECO automatics.

Since June 1996, after thefirst DECO 2000 machinescapacity 10 mm had beensupplied, the operating sys-tems have been modernisedand the software has beendeveloped.

Like all products, there hasbeen a succession of TB-DECO releases, in accor-dance with changes re-quested by our customers, and improving the avail-able facilities.

The launch of new machine types,13mm-capacity DECO 2000 andMULTIDECO 20/6- coincides withthe presentation of a new TB-DECO release.

Based on 32 bit programming totake full advantage of the powerof Windows 95,98,NT4 and 2000,this version cannot be run underWindows 3.11.

Each generated part creates a TB-DECO (*.pdb) file which per-fectly replaces numerous files(*.cat, *.pgm, *.pce) used in pre-vious generations. The new TB-

DECO Version 5.0 opens old filesand automatically generates pro-grams in the new form.

The machine data that requiredmany files (*.cfg, *.md) is now re-grouped in a single *.dbm file.

Using the new interface this ap-plication runs on a 32 bit operat-ing system. TB-DECO version 5allows “copying and pasting” fromdifferent turned part programmes.

The Windows environment givesyou the advantage of such regu-lar functions as floating toolbars, context menus, etc.

For programs requiring numerousoperation lines (MULTIDECO),the software offers the advantageof a simplified display, allowing agreater number of operation lineson the screen.

If there are no big differences inthe working method of this newversion, then why has it been de-veloped?

The new interface is more userfriendly and is fully integrated inthe Windows 95, NT and 98logic allowing a better and morefriendly programming method.

Saving of time

After testing with several operat-ing systems and various processorconfigurations, our engineers havefound astounding results ! Amongthe tests done, in the worst case,50% of the time can be saved. Inthe best case, the calculation timeis divided by 4!

Moreover, in the case of programmodifications, only the modifieditems are recompiled. Also here,a considerable time can be saved. For example (Win NT, Pentium266 32 Mb ram):

A specific document “from 4.32to 5” will be available on Internet(http://www.tornos.ch/rel5) (may99) explaining in details the op-erating difference between these

both versions. The same docu-ment can be obtained from yourusual TORNOS-BECHLER cor-respondent.

This new version will be com-mercialised from June 99 alongwith the new machines, and it isfully compatible with the formermachines and programs and ob-viously with the year 2000.

Our specialists will stay at yourdisposal on our stand (Hall 5 –Stand B16) at the EMO in Paris.

TRICKS OF THETRADE 1. New G904 macro

for the DECO 2000 – 20/26 mm capacity.

Description: Parting off withconstant cutting speed

When working with large diame-ters, a constant cutting speed willsave time and provide the best toolworking conditions.

Use:

The G904 macro achieves partcutting at a constant rate.

Since the TB-DECO program-ming system and the PNC-DECOparallel numeric control do notcontrol the speed of rotation in re-lation to the diameter being ma-chined (hence the vast improve-ment in productivity of the DECO2000 concept), it is possible to cal-culate a pseudo constant cuttingspeed for cutting operations.

This is achieved with the G904macro.

This facility requires version 4.32of the TB-DECO software.

For further information on theuse of this new macro, pleaserefer to the DECO 2000 – 20/26 mm capacity programmingmanual, section 6.2.2. Extracts ofthis section are also available fromTORNOS-BECHLER or can beloaded remotely via the Internet.

Comment:

This macro only applies to partingoff operations.

The use of bar clamping jaws (op-tion 2900) is not essential to lockthe bar during multiple bar feedoperations. The counter-spindle

Operations 1:9, 1:10, 1:12, 2:2, 2:3 and 2:4 concerning bar clampingby tools T11 and T21 can be dispensed with and replaced by a counter-spindle clamping operation, as described below:

Operation 4:7 executes counter-spindle chuck clamping (M110),operation 1:11 executes bar feed-ing Z1 and finally, operation 4:8executes the unclamping of thecounter-spindle chuck (M111)once bar-feed has been completed. The other machining operationscan continue in the normal way.

Axis Z4 now has to be correctlypositioned to execute clamping. This position depends on partlength. This position can also besimply determined directly inmanual mode on the machine, atthe time of start-up or, in theory,by adding the various programmedlengths (original offset and toolgeometry).

2. Saving time when machining a long part.

Programming:

Basic model V4_10_L, of the DECO_20 machine:

(Long part model supplied as standard in the TB-DECO software)

can do this equally well, bearingin mind the following restriction:

- The diameter of the counterspindle collet must be the sameas the material diameter.

This method offers the followingsavings:

◆ It releases positions T11 andT21 which are normally occu-pied by the clamping jaws, thussaving two positions for tools.

◆ The facility of bar-feeding,with-out having to stop spindle S1,by synchronising spindle S4.

Machining a long part using the special device (option 4900)can be improved by applying the following tip:

The founder Callisto Poggipolini, driven by an unflagging spirit toinnovate and succeed, manned thefew machines that existed in theworkshop, situated then as it is to-day in San Lazzaro di Savena,Bologna.

As time went by, with a watchfuleye on the most up-to-date pro-duction processes, the POG-GIPOLINI company expanded, concentrating not only on in-creasing the firm’s size and capa-bility, but more significantly, onconstantly growing the level oftechnology. The older generation, which played such an importantpart in the company’s expansion, have now handed over the task ofcontinual modernisation, andbringing in new blood and newmarkets.

Today control of the company liesin the hands of Stefano Poggipoliniand his wife Rosanna, respective-ly Commercial Director and Head

of Administration, and Marco Pog-gipolini and his wife Monica, responsible for Production andthe Drawing Office.

Today, the POGGIPOLINI Com-pany can undoubtedly be termeda “small ... big company”, small indimensions, but big in terms oftechnology. The means with whichit has equipped itself through care-ful investment over the years haveenabled POGGIPOLINI Srl toimprove their position in all sec-tors of the market, from automo-bile to motorcycle manufactur-ing, aeronautics to medicine, andprecision hydraulics to pneumat-ics. Choosing production equip-ment of the highest class hasbrought with it production flexi-bility and the ability to adapt tocustomer needs. Among thisequipment are the TORNOS-BECHLER CNC machines and, more recently, the DECO 2000system.

chining of special materials. Thecompany has the ability to project, design and produce parts of anytype to customer specification, from the production feasibilityanalysis, right through to delivery.

Its flexibility enables the compa-ny to satisfy requests for the massproduction of large numbers ofparts, for small part prototypesand small production runs. Thewide variety of machines avail-able lets them accommodate eachand every specific requirement ofa customer, while the productionmeans used are chosen accordingto criteria of quality, precision, cost and quantity requested.

Final product inspection is car-ried out in a centralised, qualitycontrol area.To match its most ad-vanced production technologies,POGGIPOLINI Srl also has aQuality Control departmentequipped with non-destructiveand metallographic testing means. In 1994,the company obtained itsfirst aeronautical qualificationAQAP-4, followed by the DENNORSKE VERITAS certificationto ISO 9002 in 1997 and TUVcertification in 1998.

CLASSES OF WORKPIECES ANDMATERIALS MACHINED

POGGIPOLINI Srl’s outputranges from standard series boltsand screws in Titanium 6A14V andErgal 7075, to parts made to aero-nautical drawing specification, inTitanium alloys, MultiphaseMP35N high-speed steels, Inconel718 and other special materials.

The company’s first encounterwith TORNOS-BECHLER tech-nology came as the result of amarket request for parts in Aisi 316L Stainless Steel Titanium for ap-plications in the medical and den-tal implants sector. In this partic-ular sector, the world-leadingTORNOS-BECHLER machines, initially with CNCs and latelywith the DECO 2000 system, have given ample demonstrationof how they can provide excellenttechnological collaboration, bothin programming of the workpieceand in production, optimising theentire production process.

In addition, the Windows envi-ronment simulations let the op-erator verify in shared time eachsingle operation on the workpiece, from the high production possi-bilities that a 10-axis machinewith 21 tool positions can offer. In a company such as POG-GIPOLINI Srl,where specialised,high-tech workpieces producedin small, medium and large quan-tities are the hallmark, it has al-ways been important to be able tocode workpieces, material, cus-tomers, tool geometry, suppliers ofauxiliary materials and raw mate-rial characteristics, all while the ma-chine is running, resulting in adatabase of information.

CUSTOMERS AND HUMAN RE-SOURCES

POGGIPOLINI Srl is one of themost important European manu-facturers of parts used in the mo-tor-racing world by the leadingFormula 1 car and motorcyclemakers.

For the aeronautical sector, thecompany supplies the leadingAmerican and European manu-facturers with hydraulic couplings, high precision screws and screwstuds, made of materials with hard-ness reaching 200 kg/mm2.

The number of employees totals40 people and sales globally in1998 topped the 10 billion Liramark.

CONCLUSION

Looking back over the develop-ments and growth of POG-GIPOLINI Srl with the founderCallisto Poggipolini and his sons

Stefano and Marco, significantgains been made sine the tech-nological collaboration withTORNOS-BECHLER.

Using machinery that offered highversatility and adaptable to thespecific market requirements forturned components, that thecompany was able to achieve thenecessary flexibility and produceits extensive variety of parts foreach market sector.

The link between POGGIPOLI-NI and TORNOS-BECHLER wasintensified by the DECO 2000system, making machining possi-ble with 4 tools simultaneously, allowing synchronisation betweenthe 10 axes and offering a tailstock-spindle working in hidden time.

The road ahead for POGGI-POLINI Srl is set for demandingtargets, and requires constant tech-nological change. With regard tothe human resources, we feel thatthe company in itself is a guaran-tee for its customers; as for theproduction means, we would

merely like to confirm that theDECO 2000 system, with itsconstant software and hardwareupgradability, will most certainlyfollow the times, providing a guar-antee for the immediate techno-logical future, at least.
