Topic Tree Planting The most commonly made mistake in tree care is improper planting. And, theres one chance to do it correctly. Gerry will discuss planting techniques for bare root, containerized and balled and burlapped trees. He will display proper procedures and show the results of improper practices. Additionally, he will discuss proper handling techniques from the nursery to the planting site, methods for determining proper planting depth, and aftercare once planted. This presentation has been given at the INLA Idaho Horticulture Expo in Boise, the Tree, Turf and Landscape Conference in Post Falls.
Topic Tree and Site Selection The phrase Right Tree, Right Place has been used by many people for a long time. But, we still find trees sighted improperly in all sorts of situations. This presentation will go over site evaluation and selecting the right tree for the location. We will discuss soils, site conditions, irrigation, drainage, utilities, tree size and form and adequate growing requirements. Additionally, Gerry has 20 years of experience in the nursery business. He will help people understand how to select quality nursery stock, pitfalls to avoid at the nursery, examination of the root ball to minimize circling/girdling roots and avoidance of injury to the plant from the nursery to the planting site.

Topic Tree Biology To understand trees, one must have an understanding of how they work, the biological processes involved, response to various stimuli, protection zones and much more. Gary will present information to the group about how trees work and how they respond to pruning, injury, climate and soil. From the roots to the twigs, attendees will be offered insight into the biology of trees. This topic has also been presented at the INLA Idaho Hort Expo and at college level classes at Boise State and the College of Southern Idaho.

Topics Outdoor Sessions - Tree Felling, Chain Saw Safety, and Tree Pruning. The Emmett City Park was established over 100 years ago in Gem County. Within the park boundaries are many mature trees, including the State Champion American Elm. Additionally, the City of Emmett has been planting many varieties of younger trees. This gives the opportunity to demonstrate proper pruning techniques for both Structural and Mature Tree methods. We have reserved some trees that need to be removed and will be able to show how to safely remove dead or hazardous trees. And, we will also provide education on Chain Saw Safety. While this is NOT a hands-on session, people learn by seeing things happen. Jeff is a recognized local professional and is highly respected by his peers, his insight will be invaluable to workshop participants.
