WHAT’S INSIDE:

Starting out in a New 4-H Year Winter is slowly approaching and the 2015-2016 4-H year has begun! We have celebrated National 4-H Week and new members have begun to enroll. It is a great time to be thankful for our 4H leaders and volunteers for all of their hard work. It’s also a good time for 4-H members to share with others all they have learned through 4-H! Remember that 4-H is a “family affair”- the more you and your parents become involved, the more you will get out of the program and the more it will benefit your life! I can’t wait to see the impact that 4-H will have on all of your lives!

We would like to welcome all the new 4-H members and their families to the Emmet County 4-H Program. We are starting another exciting year of 4-H in Emmet County! I encourage 4-H members to get involved in the county and multi-county 4-H activities and events being offered.

As we approach the Holiday Season remember community service and giving to others in need is a BIG part of 4-H and I encourage you and your clubs to look for ways to give back to those in need in your communities.

We wish you all a happy and healthy Holiday Season!

What 4-H’ers Need to Do: *The Iowa COOL Coalition has a simple affidavit that can work for all species of livestock (beef, sheep, swine, poultry, goat). This affidavit is located at, http://www.extension.iastate.edu/sites/www.extension.iastate.edu/files/4h/Example4HAffidavit.pdf Page 1 explains the steps needed to be taken as well as example documents that can be used for an audit trail. BUCKET BOTTLE CALVES

BEEF BONANZA

HORSE JUDGING TEAM

The 2016 Northwest Iowa Beef Bonanza will

be held on February 13th at ILCC in

Emmetsburg. All 4-H and FFA members are

invited to participate in this day of learning

all about the Beef project area. Be watching

for more details soon!

If you have a bucket-bottle calf that you

plan to bring back as a breeding heifer in

2016, you should have the calf

vaccinated for brucellosis before 10

months of age.

Who: Any 4-H member 4th-12th grade interested in horses

What: Participate in the State 4-H Horse Judging Contest, March 6, 2016 at the Ellsworth Community College Equestrian Center in Iowa Falls

Youth will place 6-8 classes of four horses each. Classes include halter, western pleasure, hunter under saddle, pattern classes, etc. They will also learn to explain their reasons for their decisions on two of the classes. Members learn tons of life skills through this judging process: decision making, speaking, organization, notetaking, etc. For those who also show horses, participants learn what judges are looking for in each class, which tends to make them more competitive.

Cost: Most counties help pay the registration fees for the contest. Travel to and from Iowa Falls for the contest and travel to practices would be the responsibility of each family. Some choose to come the night before, as the contest will begin early on Sunday morning.

Practices: We will begin practices on December 5. Practices will be held most Saturdays until the contest.

4-H IS BASED ON RESEARCH

4-H Carnival & Awards

The Emmet County Awards Night was held on Sunday, November 15 at Forest Ridge School in Gruver, IA, to honor 4-H members, 4-H Clubs and 4-H Volunteers. The night included the recognition of 4-H Alumni Award winner: Terry Feger and Honorary 4-H Members, Robin Lary and Tim Danielson.

Our Emmet County 4-H Alumni Award Winner for 2015 is Terry Feger. As a youth, Terry was a member of the Rural EE 4-H Club. He showed pens of 5 beef cattle, breeding heifers and cow/calf pairs. He preferred not showing lead steers but spent plenty of time helping his sis-ters prepare theirs for the fair. Terry has also helped his nephew, niece and her friend by allowing them to keep their 4-H calves at his place. Terry has volunteered by serving on the 4-H Beef Committee for several years.

Our first 2015 honorary 4-H Club Member Award recipient is Robin Lary. Robin has been an important part of the Emmet County 4-H program since her kids joined the organization. She was a very active 4-H parent supporting both of her kids for many years by attending meet-ings and workshops with them. She has loved the many experiences and lessons that 4-H's gain through the program. Robin also volunteered annually at the fair helping the photography exhibits and whatever else needs to be done. She has been very instrumental in the Ellsworth Go-Getters club, helping with club projects and activities. She also does volunteering within to community and schools corresponding to the values of 4-H. Robin has always supported 4-H events and willing to help out.

Our second 2015 honorary 4-H Club Member Award recipient is Tim Danielson. Tim was basically a “town kid”. He was born and raised in Estherville and primarily learned community service through the Boy Scout program, even going on to reach the highest distinction in scouting, his Eagle Scout Award. After marrying a “country girl”, he learned the life of a hobby farmer when he and Nancy purchased an acreage in 1989 when their girls were young. Soon after that, the oldest daughter joined 4-H and their life became consumed with his three daughters, Amber, Amy and Abby showing beef, swine and sheep projects. Tim even helped his niece with a poultry exhibit at the fair one year. Static exhibits were also a big part of their 4-H years and Tim enjoyed applying his Boy Scout experience to outdoor projects and helping the girls build bird houses, light boxes, and other woodworking exhibits. He even helped them experiment with bread making exhibits. In 2003, Tim served on the Swine Committee for two years and once his youngest daughter, Abby, graduated in 2005 and finished with 4-H, he began serving on the Sheep Committee. He has continued to serve as a member of the sheep committee for the past 10 years. The First Presbyterian Church and their staff was recognized “Friend of 4-H Award Recipients” for all that they do for the Emmet County 4-H program. They have been supportive in allowing their facilities to be used for various 4-H events including workshops, leader trainings, coun-ty and intermediate council meetings. The 2015-2016 County 4-H Youth Council was inducted on Sunday. Members are: Suzy Anderson, Brianna Birkland, Caressa Frank-lin, Claire Herum, Tiegan Huntley, Zoey Huntley, Claudia Kinnander, Faith Lutat, Brock Mace, Ethan Marth, Landra McClellan, Lauren Newgard and Scarlett Rose.
