Sunday’s Scripture Segments

Scripture readings for this Sunday,

February 21, 2016, Second Sunday in Lent, are:

Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18

God promises a childless and doubting Abram that he will have a son, that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars, and that the

land of Canaan will be their inheritance. Abram’s trust in God is

sealed with a covenant-making ceremony, a sign of God’s promise.

Philippians 3:17--4:1

Although Paul’s devotion to Christ has caused him to be persecuted,

he does not regret the course he has taken. Writing from prison, he

expresses confidence in a glorious future and encourages other

Christians to follow in his footsteps.

Luke 13:31-35

Neither Herod’s plotting nor Jerusalem’s resistance to maternal

love will deter Jesus from his sacrificial mission.

Sermon Title: “God Speaks, God’s Initiative,

God’s Intrusive.” Pastor Dave Daugs

Sunday Morning Ed Opps

Join on Sunday mornings for:

“Good News of Luke”

8:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall with rotating leaders: Pastor Daugs - Jack Kelly - Kurt Queller

February 21: Connection to “Good News of Acts”

2016 is the year of Luke’s Gospel. By next Thanksgiving, 2016, we will

have read through most of Luke’s Gospel at Sunday morning worship. Join us for this compelling overview of Luke’s Gospel. It will most definitely

bring clarity to behind the scenes information and messages Luke writes into his Gospel. Beautifully written with many sub-themes;

join us in Biblical Discovery… Pastor Daugs

J.A.M. for children through age 12. Following the Children’s Sermon, J.A.M. leaders will escort the kiddos

down to the Fellowship Hall for crafts, games, songs, and a snack. Children will return to the Sanctuary just prior to Holy Communion.

Prayer Pieces Book Study Sunday mornings at 8:30 in “The Gallery.” We will be reading several of the stories from The Book of God by Walter Wangerin, Jr. during Advent and into the New Year. This is the Bible as you have never read it before -

told with passion and depth. We are beginning with the story of Mary. Please come join us whether you "knit or not." It is available through

Amazon - paperback for $15.70 or on Kindle for $5.99. Contact Carol Nelson with questions at [email protected].

Mid-Week Lenten Services Every Wednesday

February 17 through March 16.

Join us for the Wednesdays of Lent (2/17, 2/24, 3/2, 3/9, 3/16) led by Pastor Daugs, downstairs in the Fellowship Hall.

Soup Supper - 5:30—6:00 PM Lenten Devotions - 6:00—6:55 PM

Read on to learn more about our Lenten Evening Theme:

NOTE: There will be J.A.M. - Jesus and Me! held during our time of devotion for kids through age 12. Children will rejoin their

parents as we conclude our worship with Holden Evening Prayer.

Confronting Death: A Christian Approach to the End of Life with Walter Wangerin, Jr.

“You and I sooner or later are going to experience what comes to all people: we are going to experience dying. But there is a difference

between us and the would—the world looks away from that fact and tries to hide it as much as possible—but we as faithful people have the power and

ability to look death straight in the eye and understand it.”

Drawing from his own recent experience with cancer, Wagerin explores:

Discovering serious illness Grieving before death

Caring for the one who is not sick How do we handle the pain? Confronting the dying itself

During our Lenten Evenings we will

Journey through Grief with Stephen Ministries

Pastor, clinical psychologist, author, and founder of Stephen Ministries, Rev. Kenneth C. Haugk, Ph.D., has devoted his life to caring for others

and equipping others to care.

In 2002, his work took on deeper significance when his wife, Joan, died of ovarian cancer. In Journeying through Grief, he shares from the heart, drawing from his personal

and professional experience and from the insights of many others.

Journeying through Grief— Explains the grief process and encourages the bereaved to grieve in

healthy ways. Helps people to understand that the craziness they might be

experiencing during grief is normal Describes the varied and intense feelings that typically surface during

grief and suggests healing ways to deal with and express those feelings.

Looks at grief from a biblical perspective, gently helping grieving people work through any faith struggles they might be encountering.

Provides hope that—even when they might not see it or feel it—God is present, working from the inside out to heal their broken heart.

Lets grieving people know that someone is thinking about them, empathizes with their pain, prays for them, and really does care.

Each of the four books is 44 pages long with short, easy-to-read chapters written in a caring, friendly style. The pages are interspersed with Bible passages, poems, and quotes about grief.

Thank you to the following

PASTOR’S DISCRETIONARY FUND The Pastor’s Discretionary Fund is used by the Pastor to assist individuals and families that are in need. Most often it is used to assist people who stop by the church office and request assistance for basic needs. Community organizations may also refer to Pastor, persons who need assistance. Pastor investigates each case by checking in with the Sheriff’s Office and or Latah County Social Services both of which share a common data base that can spot repeating requests and persons to keep an eye on. These requests to the Pastor’s Discretionary fund may be: They are homeless and need a place to stay for a night or two. The fund

can provide temporary hotel housing for up to 3 nights while other arrangements are being made. Pastor will assist these people in connecting with local resources. Most people may receive housing assistance up to 2 times per year, however circumstances and situations may direct more assistance…especially when there are children involved.

They may need assistance with utilities that are about to be denied. Pastor calls the utility provider and helps to set up a payment plan that incudes an initial payment from the Discretionary Fund.

They are traveling through town and need gasoline or vehicle repairs so they can continue to their destination. Their personal resources are depleted. Pastor assists them in purchasing fuel or finding a mechanic who can repair their vehicle for a reasonable rate.

People need to see a doctor or need medicine. Pastor uses the Moscow Clinic to provide these services. They may need a prescription filled and this is done through Rosauers Pharmacy.

People may need food. They are connected with our local food bank and/or food is given from our ELC kitchen surplus or is purchased by Pastor.

Preschool families sometimes need assistance with, rent, utilities, food, medicine, clothing or tuition.

ELC has the gracious ministry of “loaves and fishes,” assisting people with their most basic needs. This is a very “hands on” ministry through our Pastor.

The Pastor’s Discretionary Fund is in need of your financial support. Could your support for the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund be above and beyond your

usual gracious giving? If you are able to, pease give a separate offering ear marked for the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund.

(Our Church Treasurer and our Pastor administrate the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund.)

Dear Emmanuel Lutheran Family,

Most of you know Steve, the husband of our beloved music teacher and teaching assistant Tina, has been fighting cancer. He and Tina are both people of great faith and were an awesome witness for God during his illness. On February 14, he was taken home to be with Jesus. Please keep Tina and her family in your prayers. Steve McClure's Celebration of Life will be this Saturday, Feb. 20, at 11AM. It will take place at the Nazarene Church (1400 East 7th Street) here in Moscow. Many of you have been outpouring in providing financial and emotional support for the family. Love has shown through in many ways. Tina has asked that flowers not be purchased and if you would like to financially contribute to the McClure family, please see Nikki Cox and/or stay posted on additional links being created to financially support the family. Tina is surrounded by friends and family. Her faith is giving her the peace and the strength that she needs at this difficult time. Thanks so much for your love and prayers. Blessings, Emmanuel Preschool Staff
