Emmanuel Life & Times August & September 2017
Summer Ministry Reflections
Mona and I celebrated our 35th Anniversary at an all-inclusive resort in Jamaica. We had a
great time. Everything about the resort was nice: beautiful grounds and beaches, nice rooms,
amazing food, nightly entertainment. One of the things that made this resort special was the attitude
of the staff. Every staff person at the resort (lawn crew, pool attendants, cleaning staff, restaurant
workers, management staff, etc.) went out of their way to be friendly and supportive. Everywhere
we went, we are greeted with a smile and asked if we were enjoying our stay… did we need
anything. The attitude of the staff was caring and genuine. I think every church should act like a resort when new
people come our way. We need to go out of our way to acknowledge our guests, to ask them how they are doing
and how we can serve them. Too many churches act like convenience stores where people enter, find what they
want and leave without any meaningful human interaction. Let’s commit to making Emmanuel friendly, helpful
and supportive for all who come through our doors!
Some August and September service and ministry highlights:

lessons, and a key verse. We will begin in Genesis and work our way to Revelation.
Serving with you, Pastor Kurt Busiek

MISSION & MINISTRY NEWS FROM MARGARET FREES
Exciting things related to missions and ministry development continue at EBC.
On July 9, we were blessed to have Lori Frees, recently returned from serving in
Cambodia, who shared thoughts and answered questions about life in missions overseas.
On August 27, Mike and Marcy Brown, currently serving in Peru, will be here to update
us on their ministry.
Mountain State Mission Offering - Bridge of Hope - This offering, which will be
collected during the month of Aug., goes 100% to programs within the state of West
Virginia. It supports efforts by the West Virginia Baptist Convention toward Discipleship & Leadership
Development (Golden'eers, Hispanic Ministries), Student Ministries (BCM, Camp Cowen, YMPT/YLC), Mission
Support (Camp Global), Communications (The West Virginia Baptist, websites), Area Ministry (pulpit supply, search
committees), and Convention Auxiliaries ( AB Men, AB Women). These are just some of the programs that benefit
from this offering.
McKinley Elementary and Vandevender Middle - Back-to-School - We will be collecting back to
school items for students at McKinley Elementary in August. Please bring pencils, pens, paper,
notebooks, backpack, etc. by August 31. There is a box in the Narthex for your items. Courtney
Johnson will be coordinating this collection. Vandevender supplies will be collected in
September. Mona Busiek is the coordinator for Vandy.
Operation Christmas Child - Are you interested in being a volunteer at the Charlotte, NC facility in December to
help process shoe boxes? Please contact Brian Brown for more information.
Fall Craft Fair will be held Oct. 7 from 9:00-2:00 in the Fellowship Hall. Last year, we
were at capacity with vendors and several have expressed their desire to return this
year. Spaces are assigned on a first come/first served basis. We welcome back our faithful
vendors and look forward to newcomers. If you are a gifted crafter, or know one, please
consider sharing your talents at the Fair.
This is the major fund raising event of the year for our food assistance ministry. Proceeds
in the past have gone to Old Man Rivers, Latrobe Street Mission and Salvation
Army. This event has room for many volunteers. We need helpers for set-up, take-down, concession, and
cashiers. Additionally, the baked goods tables are a highlight of the event so we need your delicacies. For more
information or a Registration form, contact [email protected] or (304)-489-2745.
If you are looking for an active area of service here at Emmanuel, please consider joining the Mission and Ministry
Development Team. We cover a wide variety of events and projects and would love to share the journey with you.

Starting in September: “SINGLE & PARENTING COURSE”
As a single parent, you know there aren’t many people who truly understand the unique
challenges you face. You deeply desire to do what’s best for your kids, and you worry that
you aren’t. Sometimes, it even feels as if it’s all you can do to get from one day to the next.
“Single and Parenting” is a special group that will bring hope, and refreshing, biblical
teaching on topics important to your life.
In this group, you will:
- Find practical help and hope.
- Watch excellent videos featuring both parenting experts and single-parents
- Take some quiet time to reflect on this information
- Have opportunities to briefly discuss topics in a confidential, small group
This two-month long Course is held on Wednesday evening at 6:00pm. It starts on September 13, 2017. Parents
and children are invited to church at 5:00 for an excellent dinner before the course. Childcare is available with prior
arrangements. The Course Leaders, Keith and Eileen Mayer, both have had experience as single parents themselves!
Space is limited and registration is required.
For further information and to register, contact Dr. Eileen Mayer or Terri Fielder at (304) 485-5171 or ….. You can
also check out the international website at: www.singleandparenting.org.
“ROMANS 12 MEAL”
Who is interested in hosting a “Romans 12 Meal”? In these verses, we are encouraged to express our
kindness toward each other in a variety of ways…including hospitality. To put this in practice, we
propose a flexible, easy format that is designed to foster friendship over a shared meal. The goal of a
Meal is to open your heart and (typically) your home to approximately 8 persons (including you!) for
a meal with time to develop new friendships or strengthen existing ones.
It is so easy to interact with the people with whom we are already familiar and comfortable. It can be
difficult to reach out to people you don’t really know… particularly if they are visitors or new members. The “Romans
12 Meal” format makes it easier to do this with just a few, suggested steps:
1. Pray the Lord guides you as to whom to invite.
2. Particularly seek out persons who are new … or new to you!
3. Prepare a simple invitation with the date, time, your address and contact info.
4. Give potential guests your invitation.
5. Prepare a simple meal and a few “Icebreakers” to foster conversation.
6. Enjoy your time together!
The Meals are about the loving hospitality described in Romans 12...not specific rules to follow. So, be creative and
flexible in where, whom, and how many you (feel comfortable) to host. For further information or to sign up, contact
Keith or Eileen Mayer at (304-834-2563), Barbara Kirsch, or Terri Fielder at the Church Office (304-485-5171).
Oh – and – enjoy the company!
