Films such as Titanic, Schindler’s List and Hotel Rwanda have dramatically increased the profile of history in popular culture in the last 15 years. However, to what extent is history accurately reflected and portrayed in Hollywood films? And how do our current beliefs shape the way that history is portrayed in film?

This course requires students to actively examine the dynamic relationship between history and film. Student learning will focus on social, political, and military themes in the twentieth century. Students will assess the historical context of the film and the film-making process, defend their own point of view on given films, and most importantly explain the advantages and disadvantages of using film to convey history. As well, they will be given opportunities to use a variety of research models, develop informed opinions, and present information in a variety of ways. No pre-requisite is required.
