Emigrants from Leistadt (Kr. Bad Dürkheim), Rheinland-Pfalz,Bundesrepublik Deutschland, to the American Colonies

Compiled by Edward N. Wevodau

Modern Germany identification:

Leistadt, District of Bad Dürkheim, State of Rheinland-Pfalz, Bundesrepublik Deutschland

(or Leistadt, Bad Dürkheim, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany)

Postal Code: 67098 Leistadt

In her work Palatine Origins of Some Pennsylvania Pioneers, Annette K. Burgert presented her compiled research of emigrants from various Rheinland-Pfalz villages. Leistadt sits just outside the periphery of this work. Using abstracted church records available via the LDS FamilySearch website, I have identified a number of emigrants who left this village and others adjoining those analyzed in Ms. Burgert’s work.

The Ship Harle, which arrived at Philadelphia on 1 September 1736, carried a large number of immigrants from the Rheinland-Pfalz region. Recognizing a few names on the passenger manifest, I searched select Palatine villages for evidence of probable emigrants.

The analysis below pertains to suspected emigrants from the village of Leistadt. Some are certain, some are probable, and some are possible. I supplemented my own research by looking for evidence of Leistadt emigrants posted online by other researchers. I have included their findings and speculation—with attribution—below.

I am not a professional researcher; however, I have 20 years of experience working diligently with Colonial Pennsylvania records. My passion is piecing together early settlers, documenting their origin, settlement, and (if) subsequent migration. My primary area of focus is South Central Pennsylvania (viz., Franklin, Adams, York, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, Lancaster, and Berks counties).

I have not had opportunity to examine the original Leistadt church books, which may identify other emigrants to the Middle Colonies. My work on the European side is rather primitive—relying primarily on abstracts available via familysearch.org. The actual church records should provide more information than abstracts placed online—including actual village of residence (some may have resided in satellite towns of Leistadt) and places of birth of the parents.

Page 2: pennsylvaniasettlers.com Emigrants... · Web viewThis area, located so near to Alsace, historically saw the flight of French (& Norman heritage - Grym) Protestants into the nearby

This work is an attempt to collect together as much information as possible for—as we know—they traveled in groups. And analysis of groups often gives evidence of migration that otherwise could not be known.

Abstracts of Eighteenth Century Leistadt Lutheran baptisms and marriages can be examined via familysearch.org. Narrow your search to FHC Film 488300. IMPORTANT: Burial records and confirmation records were not (yet) abstracted by volunteers. Please consider the information herewith as a guide to determine ancestral possibility. The original records MUST be consulted for verification. (Based on my life circumstances, I am unable to order and read FHC film; however, if it comes available via familysearch, I will update this file.)

My personal research focuses on South Central Pennsylvania. In this area, I only find evidence of Peter Nargang, who settled in Oley Township, Berks County. I suspect the other Leistadt emigrants settled in Eastern Pennsylvania or Maryland. I welcome any church, estate, land, or tax data that can help pinpoint families that I could not locate in Colonial records.

Above: Google satellite image of Leistadt (A). The village directly to the east is Kallstadt, from which Annette K. Burgert identified a few 1736-1738 emigrants in her work Palatine Origins of Some Pennsylvania Pioneers.

1736 Harle: Johannes Hanenwald, age 231736 Harle: Anna Elisabeth Hanenwald. age 271738 Thistle: Michael Hubach1738 Thistle: Andreas Hannewalt

I have found these immigrants difficult to pinpoint in Colonial records. They appear to have come from Leistadt; however, further research and verification is necessary.

Note: A Jacob Hubach on the 1738 Thistle. I did not find this name in available Leistadt records.

COLONIAL RECORDS:

Not yet located with reasonable certainty. The surname Hubach allegedly evolved into Hoppach, et al. This surname is in Western Pennsylvania by the close of the Eighteenth Century.

1736 Harle: Daniel (X) Nargang, age 201736 Harle: Johan Peder Nargang, age 331736 Harle: An. Maria Nargangin, age 231736 Harle: Andreas (N) Nargang, age 37, with Catharina Nargangin, age 40

This surname can take the following forms in early records:Narregang/Narragang?Nargang/Norgang/Norcon/Naregang/Nargang/Narrowcank/Narrowgang

This unique surname makes it relatively easy to locate. I have not fully pursued Pennsylvania records. Of interest, the Andreas Nargang who arrived in 1736 appears to be childless. If he left an estate, records could link together the entire family in Colonial America.

Louise,

I have an interest in the Narragang family. To my knowledge, no one else is studying the Bucks, LehighCounty Narragangs. My interest in the Narragang's is in trying to tie out the 1700's and early 1800'sWolbach (Woolbach) families of Bucks, Northampton & Monroe Counties. From your posting, it appears that you have church birth records in Springfield Twp. available to you. This is other assorted informationthat may be new to you.

My specific interest:Anna Margaret, widow of John Woolbach (d. after 1773 Springfield Township, Bucks) remarried JosephNarragang about 1776. The children of John Woolbach were Jacob, Peter and Michael, per John Woolbach's intestate records in Bucks.

Overview of the Narragang Families:The Narragang families were Palatines which arrived in the Philadelphia as follows:

Ship Harle, Sept 1, 1736: Daniel, age 20; Johan Peter, 33; Andreas, 37;Catharina Nargangin, 40; An Maria Nargangin, 23.

Ship Jamaica Gallery, Feb. 7, 1738/9: Jacob Nargang, age 28

My information on the Narragang family skips a few years after their arrival. The family members nextappear in Berks and Lehigh Counties:

Berks County Naragangs:1767 Tax records, Orey Township, Berks: Single man, Peter Nargang

July, 14, 1768, PA Gazette, probate notice for Danel Nargang, late of Alsace Township, Berks Co.

Lehigh, Bucks, and adjacent County Naragangs:1755, Marriage record of Michael Naregang and Anne Elisabthe Fegele, St Paul's Evangelical LutheranCongregation, Upper Saucon Township, Lehigh

Buck Co. Tax records: 1775, Richland Twp. Haenry Nargang; 1778, Springfield Twp, Jacob Neargang; 1780, Springfield Twp, Jacob Narrowcank and also Henry Narrowgang, 1787, Peter Narrowgang

Northhampton Co. Tax records, 1780, Lower Saucon Twp., Widow Narragang

1790 Census, Bucks Co: Peter Narawcong, Henry Narawcong, and Hery Naragong

1782 Probate record, Northumberland Co. Catherine Norcon (last Catherine Smith) was appointed coadministrator of the estates of Daniel Norcon and John Smith.

Hope this is helpful. I live in Washington State, and the above reflects only what I have found usinglocal sources.

1736 Harle: Michael Jochim, age 33 (with Anna Maria Jochimin, age 30)1736 Harle: Andreas (A) Jochim, age 40 (with Margreth Jochimin, age 34)

As with some other Leistadt emigrants, I have had difficulty identifying this family in Colonial records. Their emigration from Leistadt appears certain. The surname Jochim may evolve to Yocum.

The Leistadt records give Vincentz’s surname as Schauquin; however, he signed his name as Schacken upon arrival at Philadelphia.

Perhaps Arndt Kurtz should be moved to the possible emigrants section; however, based on circumstantial evidence, it is highly likely that he was part of the Leistadt emigration.

POSSIBLE EMIGRANTS:

1736 Harle: Valentin Voight, age 331736 Harle: Matthias Voight1736 Harle: Mathias Bruch, age 231736 Harle: Daniel Brunn, age 161736 Harle: Andreas Grimm, age 18

Whereas I am reasonably certain that the persons of Leistadt analyzed above emigrants to the America Colonies, I cannot say the same for the figures examined below. They possibly came from Leistadt. I find no evidence in available online abstracts that they continued to reside in Leistadt—and there is an immigrant of the name of an appropriate age listed near to emigrants from Leistadt or nearby villages.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1736 Harle: Valentin Voight, age 331736 Harle: Matthias Voight

If the Valentin Vogt of Leistadt is the same person on the 1736 Harle, then his wife must have died in Germany or on the voyage, as a female of this name does not appear on the women’s list.

I have included this Valentin Vogt/Voight as it is an unusual name, appears in Leistadt records, and on the ship manifest near to other probable Leistadt emigrants (or those from surrounding villages).

The Matthias Voight on the Ship Harle does not appear on List A where ages are given; however, a person of this name signed Lists B & C next to Valentin Voight. I do not find the name Matthias Voight in online Leistadt records.

Further research is necessary.

Message Board Post:

And I am a direct male descendent of John George Bruch, Frederick's brother. Interestingly, John George married Anna Barbara Repscher, and sister of Anna Catherine Repscher who Frederick married.

Frederick and John George's parents seem to be Michael Bruch and Maria Elisabeth (maiden name unknown). Michael Bruch seems to be the son of Johann Matthias Bruch and Anna Barbara (Reisser?). J. Matthias Bruch immigrated to Pennsylvania aboard the ship Harle in 1736 from Leistadt, Pfalz, Germany. A good book documents the early Bruch's: "Matthias Bruch, His Life and Times" by John-Richard Cedric Prugh, available from LuLu Publications. Strangely, my mother also arrived at the same conclusions back in the 1970's and 80's, researching the tree completely separately from JRC Prugh's research.

1736 Daniel Brunn

This emigrant is pure speculation based on the following:1. An emigrant of this name appears on the Ship Harle, signing near to other emigrants from

Leistadt as well as nearby villages.2. The age of the Daniel Brunn on the Ship Harle matches the age of a Daniel Brunn baptized in the

Leistadt records.

Cavaet: The baptized child was named Daniel Jacob Brunn whereas the emigrant on the Ship Harle signed his name as Johann Daniel Brunn.

Brunn family researchers should consider the Leistadt Daniel Brunn as a figure for further research.

“Two primary candidates for the father of Andreas (Andrew) Grim(m) have been postulated; Johann Daniel Grimm, a butcher, of the Rheinland Pfalz area and Hans George Grimm of Berwangen, Kirchstadt, Baden.

In my opinion, the most likely candidate father of Andreas (and brother Alexander Grim) is Johann Daniel Grimm. I base this on a LDS search under the name Alexander Grim which resulted in the following information:

Johann Daniel GrimmIn the Evangelisch Leistadt Pfalz Bayern Germany, Johann Daniel Grimm and wife Anna Eva had these children;Maria Catherine Grimm christened July 10, 1713Maria Agnesa Grim christened 1716Andreas Grimm christened July 21, 1718Unknown Grimm christened February 16, 1721Johanna Sabina Grimm christened March 19, 1724Alexander Grimm christened February 7, 1726

The factors of date and location shown are in the favor of Johann Daniel Grimm as father of our Andreas. To explain:

Page 21: pennsylvaniasettlers.com Emigrants... · Web viewThis area, located so near to Alsace, historically saw the flight of French (& Norman heritage - Grym) Protestants into the nearby

First, besides having the same first name, the fact that the birth year of the Andreas Grimm listed above is the same as Andreas Grim(m)'s given birthdate from the Luther Grimm book is, I believe, no small coincidence.

Second, I have a historical problem with the advocacy of Hans as the father. Berwangen, Kirchstadt, Baden is located high up against the Swiss border, and thus was farther from the areas in religious turmoil, farther from passage down the Rhine to embarking ships, especially when compared to the Kusel area of the Pfalz which is a better candidate location as part of the Palatinate movement. This area, located so near to Alsace, historically saw the flight of French (& Norman heritage - Grym) Protestants into the nearby loosely administered German kingdoms.**

Lastly, Hans George Grimm (b.1695) is established by records researchers as the father for immigrant Johan Egidus Grim, of Berwangen, of Kirchstadt, Baden, the oldest of the so-labeled "7" Grimm brothers who came to America in the 1730s (later to become a well-established Eastern PA Grim family). But whereas records researchers have proven a Hans-Johann Egidus connection, such is not the case to date with a Hans-Andreas one.

I welcome any further investigation and evidence to establish a definite father for Andreas...for nom my bet is on Johann Daniel Grimm.”
