Happy New Year!
We’re mere days away from the official half-way point of
the year – the end of Session 4. This is a great time to
connect with your student (s) about future plans including
post-graduation education & training programs, investi-
gating Running Start & WANIC options for next year, and
simply checking in about how school is going.
Remember you can always request a progress and/or
planning meeting with your child’s advisor and counselor
– there doesn’t need to be a crisis or problem for you to
check in. Students tend to do better when parents/
guardians are involved and engaged in educational plan-
ning.
As we begin the new semester, please remember the im-pact of allowing your son or daughter to stay home. Students who aren’t in school miss important learn-ing. The learning that takes place at school cannot be re-placed by homework or make-up assignments. The impact of missing school is the same whether your child is sick, ditching or taking time off for another reason. Each day missed makes it harder to keep up with the every-day classroom learning. This is particularly true at Emerson High School where most of the work is completed in class, at school. It is also important for students to develop hab-its of not missing school, which is a life skill that helps build a strong work ethic to serve them throughout high school and in life.
Missing just two days of school a month for any reason – illness, excused or unexcused absence – is considered chronic or excessive absenteeism. Chronic or excessive absenteeism is defined as missing more than 10% of the school year, or 18 total days. Research has found a corre-lation between chronic or excessive absenteeism, whether excused or unexcused, and lower assessment scores and lower graduation rates.
We understand that there are times when your child is too sick to attend school. Students should continue to stay home when ill to protect other students and staff from ill-ness.
We appreciate your help in getting your son or daughter to school. Please reach out if you have questions.

Thank you for your kind donations of toys to our
Annual Emerson Toy Drive!
We were able to collect 62 toys for families in our community. The toys collected
were dropped off at Hopelink in Kirkland for those families who would not otherwise
have been able to purchase presents for their children for the holiday.
We greatly appreciate your contributions to our Toy
Drive, benefitting children in need.

HIV/AIDS CURRICULUM Each year, in accordance with the AIDS Omnibus Bill (E2SSB 6221), we are required to provide lessons on the life-threatening dangers of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and its prevention in grades 5-12. Thirty days prior to teaching HIV/AIDS or sexual health lessons, we are required to pro-vide a parent presentation concerning the curricula and materials that will be used for such education. Our first information night was in December but in order to support you and your commu-nity to access and understand the curriculum, we are hosting additional information ses-sions. The next presentation for this year for parents will be held on February 5, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the Board Room at the Resource Center. Materials for preview and waiver forms will be available at both parent presentations. Attached you will find a letter that you can edit and use to notify parents and guardians of this presentation, when HIV/AIDS and/or sexual health lessons will be taught in your school, and how they can excuse their children from participation. The letter also provides parents and guardians with information about how to preview materials.

Test Date: February 6, 2019
Registration Deadline: January 31, 2019 at 11:59pm. Register on the website at: https://www.lwsd.org/programs-and-services/curriculum-instruction/high-school-guide/graduation-requirements/world-language-credit-options
When: 1:30pm

ready earning credit for that language through a class
Background: Students may develop world language skills in many ways. They may use
another language at home, attend language programs in the community, learn language
skills online or spend time living abroad. Students who have achieved some proficiency in
a world language may seek to earn credit by taking an assessment that measures their
proficiency.
Students who wish to pursue this option must sign up to take the World Language Compe-
tency Test. Through this program, students complete an assessment. If they demonstrate
at least a Novice Mid proficiency level, they receive a letter indicating proficiency levels and
number of high school credits earned.
The Lake Washington School District will offer four testing opportunities for 9th-12th grade
students in 2018-19. The cost of a first attempt during a student’s high school career is
free.

SCHOLARSHIP GUIDE
There are many online scholarship databases that provide a good starting point when
looking for scholarships. Some databases you may want to look at are:
⇒ WashBoard- This database is for students in Washington State. They provide infor-
mation and applications scholarships for schools in Washington, as well as out of
state schools. http://www.thewashboard.org
⇒ Scholarships.com - This is a national database on which you can create a profile
and be matched to potential scholarships. https://www.scholarships.com/
⇒ Tuition Funding Sources - This database includes information on financial aid
programs and career assessment tools. It can filter results that match your desired
education and career goals. You can register at http://www.tuitionfundingsources.com/
registration/.
FAFSA INFORMATION
For parents/guardians of Seniors- I am also attaching information about the Financial Aid Resources for your seniors planning to attend College, University, or a Technical Program
after graduation. The FAFSA application opened in October 2017. If you and your student have not already done so, this should be completed ASAP due to funding availability and
college and university financial aid deadlines. Scholarship opportunities, college and ca-
reer information and other resources will be included in newsletters throughout the year
WSECU SCHOLARSHIP
Planning to continue your education after high school? Going to college? Vocational
school? If so, WSECU scholarships are a great way to help with some of the expenses.
Every year WSECU extends an invitation to their members who are beginning or continu-
ing their higher education to apply for a scholarship. Last year they awarded nearly
$65,000 to 30 deserving recipients. $1,500 awards for 2-year college/vocational school
and $2,500 awards for 4-year undergraduate and graduate programs.
Visit wsecu.org for more information and to access the online application or call 800-562-
