John Nkengasong, MD PhD Meeting Co-Chair
Charles Boucher, MD, PhD Meeting Co-Chair
Dear Colleague,
In recent decades, the issue of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, especially those related to viruses, has become an increasingly focal area of concern in public health. In its 2007 report, the World Health Organization warned that infectious diseases are emerging at a rate that has not been seen before. Since the 1970s, about 40 infectious diseases have been discovered, including commonly mentioned SARS, MERS, Ebola, chikungunya, avian flu, swine flu and Zika and the more recent ones such as Itaya, Iquitos, Ngari and Ilesha.
It is with immense pleasure that we invite you to the 1st International Conference on Emerging Viruses, which will be held in the 1st quarter of 2018 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Organized by Virology Education in collaboration with Africa CDC, ICEV is a global platform that will bring together experts from around the world involved in emerging viruses in an interactive conference setting. Being the first to be held on the continent, we invite healthcare professionals, researchers, public health experts, policy makers, industries involved in treatment, research, discovery and development of drugs and vaccines in the field of emerging viruses.
We aim at creating a highly scientific and educative abstract- driven conference consisting of key note speeches, state-of-the-art lectures, oral and poster abstract presentations, roundtable discussion and debates and in depth discussions to exchange knowledge on latest clinical developments, updates on ongoing and new trials on various emerging and re-emerging viruses.
We believe the conference will provide an opportunity where new data will be translated to treatment and intervention guidelines and it will create a unique opportunity for community building and networking in the region and globally.
We look forward to welcoming you to ICEV 2018!
The conference chairs,
John Nkengasong Charles Boucher

NEEDS STATEMENT
According to WHO, the initial list of disease priorities needing urgent research and development (R&D) attention comprises:
• Crimean Congo haemorrhagic fever• Ebola virus disease(EVD)• Marburg• Lassa fever• MERS• SARS• Nipah
• Rift Valley fever (RVF)
In addition, the following are 'serious', requiring action as soon as possible;
• Chikungunya
• Severe fever with thrombocytopaenia syndrome
• Zika
• Dengue fever
All the above 12 diseases are caused by viral agents. 8 of the above have their origins in Africa; Crimean Congo, EVD, Marburg (which was first reported in Marburg Germany but was associated with laboratory work using African green monkeys from Uganda), Lassa fever, RVF, Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika (which even though the first outbreak was in the Federated states of Micronesia its origin is traced back to Africa).
Currently there are reports of sporadic episodes of Ebola in Democratic Republic of Congo and dengue fever has been reported in Kenya.
Whereas there is a lot of progress in understanding these viruses through surveillance, development of
vaccines and other therapeutic measures as well as preventive measures and emergency preparedness, these developments have not been disseminated globally to healthcare providers who are faced with imminent calamity and do not have access to these novel discoveries.
Thus, to face the current and future challenges, continuous update and exchange of knowledge amongst different stakeholders is vital. To facilitate this, the first global international conference exclusive to emerging viruses is organized targeting HCPs and policy makers involved in the field of (re-)emerging viruses. This will be to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in March 2018.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
ICEV is a global platform that will bring together experts from around the world involved in (re-)emerging viruses in an interactive conference setting. CONFERENCE PARTICIPATION GRANTS
The conference participation grants provide healthcare professionals with the opportunity to attend a conference they would otherwise be unable to attend due to financial restrictions. All applications include a CV, a motivation letter, and potentially an abstract (requirements vary depending on the workshop). These are submitted via an independent CPG portal and are evaluated against the assessment criteria using robust, impartial and independent peer review processes by the Grant Review Committee. This process will ensure that only the highest quality, most relevant and most competitive research is accepted but that it is.
The grants are supported by the financial contributions allocated by the sponsor, who, has no control, influence, or involvement in the selection process of the attendees whatsoever. Priority is given to applicants who have actively participated
in original research or scientific work that is being presented at the meeting and/or those who will profit most from participating in order to improve their daily clinical management.
These grants help defray costs for registration, travel and accommodation for delegates and foster their ability to form valuable professional networks and develop vital collaborations. Conference participation grant applications will be solicited, selected and awarded by an expert Grant Review Committee.
Please note that the TITANIUM, PLATINUM and GOLD support levels will reduce the costs for conference participation grants. Supporters can indicate a desired number of CPGs to be granted in the response form further below.
