As an organization that has worked hard to create access to opportunities for the communities we serve, we are inspired by the thousands of people who come through our doors every year seeking a new chance and striv-ing to reinvent their life’s path.

There are so many amazing stories we witness – of hardship and grief; of courage and resilience; and of triumph and accomplishment. Within this annual report, we highlight the stories of some of the lives we touched this year. The stories are uniquely theirs, but they also highlight some of the many ways EMERGE partners with people to create new possibilities. We are very proud of this!

Like a year in a life, our organization also journeyed during 2012 to learn, grow, endure, and celebrate. With an ambitious set of undertakings this year, much was accomplished that we wish to share:

On behalf of the board of directors and leadership staff, we wish to thank the staff at EMERGE, our many community partners and contributors and, above all, the people we serve who endeavor everyday to make their lives better and our community more whole. We hope you enjoy these stories of lives changed and a year in the life of an organization.

With respect,

Mike Wynne, President & CEO Nikhil Nayar, Board Chair

• We neared the completion of our $6.5M capital campaign to rede-velop the historic North Branch Library to create the new EMERGE Career and Technology Center.

• We held our first annual major fundraising dinner event on 10.11.12 at the Metropolitan Ballroom. Invest in Opportunities was an in-spiring, well-attended gathering that shared the stories and work of EMERGE more fully than ever before.

• EMERGE staff took on significant leadership in a number of high-profile “collective impact” partnerships that seek to improve ser-vice delivery and increase our mutual impact as organizations.

• Staff and board engaged in a new strategic planning process to de-fine organizational direction, set attainable and measurable goals, and create new statements of mission, vision and values that better align with the work of the organization.

Jeremiah is a participant in our Fathers And Children Together (FACT) program, and resides in one of our supportive housing facilities. He was unemployed and homeless when he first came to EMERGE, and has worked hard to make tre-mendous strides towards self-sufficiency. He has gained custody of his two sons and is currently working full time as a security officer at the Minneapolis Greyhound Bus Station.

Recently, Jeremiah received the Citizen’s Award of Valor for taking action to defuse a situation while on rounds at the bus station. While on duty, Jeremiah witnessed an armed suspect assault another man with a knife. He responded quickly and was able to take the suspect down without harming himself, the victim, or any other patrons in the Greyhound bus station. With a good job, stable housing, and the support of EMERGE staff, Jeremiah is planning to go back to school for a degree in Criminal Justice, with aspirations of becoming a police officer.

Jeremiah’s Story

Through an intervention by his mother and EMERGE staff, Daryl enrolled in EMERGE’s North 4 Project, a program for gang-affiliated youth ready to make a positive change in their lives. Work readiness training and internship placements are key to the program. Daryl was placed at the Avenue Eatery, a small local coffee shop located directly below the EMERGE headquarters on West Broadway in North Minneapolis. Daryl enrolled back in school and worked afternoons making sandwiches and coffee. Having the structure that a job and school provides, Daryl began to make other positive changes in his life.

As his internship was coming to a close, EMERGE staff began trying hard to find a permanent placement for Daryl. The Avenue Eatery is a very small enterprise, and it wasn’t expected that he could work there long-term. However, Daryl had made a great impression on Sammy, manager of Avenue Eatery, and he offered Daryl a permanent position. Daryl now works part time while attending school. Both EMERGE staff and, most importantly, his mother, are very proud as they watch him continue to make positive strides in his life.

Daryl’s Story

Angela is a single mother on MFIP who has overcome major hardships. Once extremely successful, involved in her com-munity and happily married, she saw her comfortable life fall apart, stemming from financial strain when the economy took a major hit in 2008. To cope with the financial stress, substance abuse became a coping mechanism for the married couple. They are now divorced.

Angela was referred to EMERGE for Employment Services. At the time she was facing eviction and in a very stressful situation. At first, she was skeptical and ready to give up. However, EMERGE staff assured her that they would assist her in becoming financially stable, in addition to connecting her with a domestic abuse advocate.

Her Job Counselor helped facilitate a plan for her to pay off past due rent and avoid eviction. Through two part-time jobs, Angela was able to meet the agreement in a very short period of time. EMERGE paid for her state recertification in her chosen field of fitness instructor, and once she had that certification, she was hired immediately! She works as a secretary in a busy office and manages her own fitness and wellness business.

On October 11, 2012, EMERGE held its first ever fundraising din-ner event at the Metropolitan Ballroom in Golden Valley. Over 200 people attended. EMERGE’s Will Wallace highlighted the North 4 Project, an intervention program for gang and clique-involved youth. He described how the program provides a sense of family for its members, and shared that, “It invests in youth who every-one else has given up on.” The night concluded with a personal story from Jimmy Bostic, Board member and former EMERGE Vil-lages participant. Jimmy spoke candidly about his past struggles and how EMERGE’s investment in him has enabled him to achieve and sustain self-sufficiency.

Strategic Plan

EMERGE began work with Aurora Consulting in late 2012 on the or-ganization’s next strategic plan. Board members and key staff came together to assist Aurora in the process of laying out goals and strategies for the next three years of operations at EMERGE. After an analysis of EMERGE’s programs and position, it was determined that new mission, vision and values statements should be created that better align with the organization’s work. These new statements are as follows:

Mission: Partnering with people as they redefine themselves and creating economic opportunities in our communities

Vision: Creating a community where people have the freedom and mutual support to thrive

Values: • Equity: We embrace the diversity of those we serve and seek inclusiveness and fairness in all we do• Responsive: We strive to be flexible and adaptive to the changing needs of the communities while

remaining urgent in our actions. • Respect: Everyone is treated with professionalism and profound regard for their individualism.• Integrity: We embrace honesty at every level of our organization.

In 2012, EMERGE concluded its five year capital campaign to rehabili-tate the historic North Branch Library into the EMERGE Career and Technology Center (ECTC), raising a total of $6.5 million. The ECTC will be a center for learning and opportunities that will link more than 2,000 people annually to career skills training, financial education, digital literacy, and job readiness training. The project revitalizes an important public space. Wat-son-Forsberg construction was selected as the primary contractor on this project. We anticipate project completion in summer/fall 2014.
