Goals 1. Promote the ANSI/USNC effort to foster increased

involvement in the emerging professionals initiative from a broad stakeholder sector, including a range of industries, NGOs, government and academic institutions2. Maintain the engagement of emerging professionals in standardization and conformity assessment and in activities that support the integration of standards in private and public sector initiatives3. Ensure that national activities and programs are available to provide emerging professionals in standardization and conformity assessment with support and on-going professional development

Guiding Principles

1. Develop a multi-year approach beginning in 20142. Identify activities that could be executed with alow budget and with minimal resources3. Engage in partnership with SDOs, government agencies, universities, etc., wherever appropriate4. Partner with other organizations with similar existing activities5. As events/activities conclude, evaluate their success and add activities that appear to be warranted

Initial Actions

Decided to concentrate on “Emerging Professionals”rather than “Young Professionals”

Conducted review of global initiatives to highlight possible areas of interest (Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Israel, Japan, Mexico, CEN/CENELEC)

Established 5 Subgroups to develop specific areas and make recommendations (National Events, Competitions, Internships, Mentoring and Communications)

NATIONAL EVENTSANSI would convene at least one and up to four sponsored program/events a year targeting Emerging Professionals and Students1. USA Science & Engineering Festival, 25 – 27 April 2014 at Convention Center in Washington, DC2. 2014 World Standards Cooperation (WSC) Roundtable May/June 2014 on West Coast3. Standards Simulation/Workshop Events4. IEC Young Professionals Program, 10 – 14 November 2014, 78th IEC General Meeting, Tokyo, Japan

Competitions

Within the next three years, ANSI should engage in atleast one and up to three competitions identifying andcollaborating with relevant organizations and groups to build awareness of the importance of standards and conformity assessment to students and Emerging ProfessionalsAnticipated events for 2014:1. Annual Student Paper Competition2. 2nd King of the Hills Program, through April 2014 at Half Hollow High Schools, Dix Hill, NY

Internships

Anticipated activity for 2014

Expand the “career opportunity” link on the ANSI web site to include links to available internship opportunities within ANSI member entities as well as links to résumés of students seeking internship opportunities. Communicate this new service to ANSI members and universities, especially those participating in ANSI’s University Outreach program

Mentoring

Another Task Group was charged with examining the feasibility of developing a national mentoring program to support Emerging Professionals, including potential partners and program parameters. The work of this Task Group is still evolving and will continue to be refined during 2014. Specific recommendations will be presented for consideration when this work is completed.

Communications

Communications covers the entire spectrum of this challenge. Utilizing the existing ANSI resources and communication avenues, we will raise awareness of our training and education offerings and Emerging Professional activities.

Going Forward - Years Two and Three

Some concepts include:- Involving and engaging former IEC YP participants and applicants - Integrating an Emerging Professionals event into WSW events- Providing judges, sponsoring prizes and being seen as a major contributor in one or more national competitions- Investigating and possibly implementing a mentoring program- Establishing and hosting a competition with help of Partners to provide wider recognition of the standardization profession
