Dementia 101
If you didn’t attend the Alzheimer’s lectureon Feb. 28 at SRC, you missed one of thebest lectures and largest attendance of anyprevious presentation. The turnout showedus how many of us are concerned aboutmemory impairment, due to being acaregiver for someone for dementia or dueto concerns that our own memory is failing.Speaker Heather Pasko from theAlzheimer’s Assn. and Seniorcorp, educated us about the 10 warning signs ofAlzheimer’s disease (one of the manyforms of dementia):
Know the 10 Signs1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life.2. Challenges in planning or solvingproblems.3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks.4. Confusion with time or place.5. Trouble understanding visual imagesand spatial relationships.
6. New problems with words in speaking orwriting.7. Misplacing things and losing the ability toretrace steps.8. Decreased or poor judgment.9. Withdrawal from work or social activities.10. Changes in mood or personality.
If you or a loved one is experiencing any ofthese signs, see a doctor to find the cause.Early diagnosis gives you a chance to seektreatment and plan for your future. You cancall our local chapter of the Alzheimer’sAssn. at 459-2405 for more information orgo online at www.alz.org/seva.

Letter from a Mother to aDaughter
“My dear girl, the day you see I’m getting old,I ask you to please be patient, but most of all,try to understand what I’m going through. Ifwhen we talk, I repeat the same thing athousand times, don’t interrupt to say: “Yousaid the same thing a minute ago”… Justlisten, please. Try to remember the timeswhen you were little and I would read thesame story night after night until you wouldfall asleep. When I don’t want to take a bath, don’t bemad and don’t embarrass me. Remember
when I had to run after you making excusesand trying to get you to take a shower whenyou were just a girl?
If I occasionally lose track of what we’retalking about, give me the time to remember, and if I can’t, don’t be nervous, impatient orarrogant. Just know in your heart that themost important thing for me is to be with you.
And when my old, tired legs don’t let memove as quickly as before, give me yourhand the same way that I offered mine to youwhen you first walked.
When those days come, don’t feel sad… justbe with me, and understand me while I get tothe end of my life with love.
I’ll cherish and thank you for the gift of timeand joy we shared. With a big smile and thehuge love I’ve always had for you, I just wantto say, I love you… my darling daughter.”
