Preface
The Emergency Cardiovascular Care Course Card Reference Guide is a quality control tool to be used
with American Heart Association (AHA) course cards. It is not a policy document. See the 2012
Emergency Cardiovascular Care Program Administration Manual: Guidelines for Program Administration
and Training (PAM), both US and international versions, for specific criteria, guidelines, and policy
for issuing course cards. The PAMs are available on the AHA Instructor Network website at
www.ahainstructornetwork.org and are for Training Centers (TCs) and instructors.
AHA Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) course cards are described throughout this Guide. This
Guide includes samples of available cards for each discipline. Quality Control Checkpoints aid the user by
providing the date the card was introduced, the date the card was withdrawn from use, and how long the
card is recognized.
Course cards are available only to authorized TCs with a confidential security code issued by AHA National
Center ECC Programs. Each student who successfully completes an AHA ECC credentialed course must be
issued the appropriate course card, which bears an AHA logo. The TC conducting the course is responsible
for card issuance and security through its instructors and Training Sites. Each TC must document how
it maintains card security and accountability. Duplicate course cards are managed by the TC issuing the
original card.
For clarification on issues addressed in this Guide or to verify the status of the TC that issued a card,
please contact the ECC Customer Support Center at 1-877-242-4277, option 4.

General Information
This section describes cards issued for courses that use criteria and materials from the 2010 American Heart
Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. The 2010
cards include BLS Instructor and BLS Healthcare Provider, March 2011; Heartsaver® Instructor, Heartsaver
CPR AED, Heartsaver First Aid, and Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED, April 2011; ACLS Instructor and ACLS
Provider, May 2011; PALS Instructor and PALS Provider, October 2011; PEARS® Provider, June 2012; ACLS EP
Instructor and ACLS Experienced Provider, April 2013; PEARS Instructor, May 2013; and Heartsaver
Pediatric First Aid CPR AED, July 2013.
Security Features
• Card layout: Each sheet of cards is formatted for printing both sides at the same time. The completed card can be peeled from the sheet and folded to form a 33∕8 × 21∕8-inch card.
• Color designation: Each discipline is designated by a color stripe at the top edge of both sides. BLS and Heartsaver are blue, ACLS and ACLS EP are red, and PALS and PEARS are purple.
• Copyright: All cards have a copyright year of 2006 or later.
• Highlighted personalization: The cards have highlighted areas for the name, issue date, and renewal date. Tampering with these areas will alter the appearance of the card.
• Microprint: All cards with a copyright year of 2006 or later use security microprinting for the information lines. For cards produced in 2006 through 2010, each “line” is the repeated text “AMERICANHEARTASSOCIATION.” For cards produced in 2011 and later, the card name in the top bar is the repeated text. For example, the microprint on the BLS Instructor card is “BLSINSTRUCTORBLSINSTRUCTOR” (see Figure 1).
• Viewing microprint: The microprint can be viewed with a loupe or magnifying glass, such as that in Figure 2.

Guidelines for Card Completion
The AHA requires that course cards have information that is complete and legible. It is recommended that all cards be stamped, typed, or computer printed to reduce the risk of cards being altered. It is permissible for only the front of the card to be legibly handwritten (student name, issue date, and recommended renewal date). The handwritten information must be printed in blue or black ink. All information on the back of the card must be stamped, typed, or computer printed. The content of AHA course cards cannot be altered in any way.
AHA course cards must be completed as follows:
Front of Card, 2006 and Later
• The course name is preprinted on the card.
• Indicate the student’s name (eg, first name, middle initial, and last name).
• Strike through or fill in the circles for modules NOT completed, if applicable.
• Indicate the issue date as a 2-digit month and day, and 4-digit year (01/15/2013).
• Indicate the recommended renewal/expiration date, 2 years from the issue date (2-digit month and 4-digit year, 01/2015; no exceptions).

Duplication/Replacement of Lost Cards
It is the responsibility of the TC to issue a duplicate card if a card is lost, is mutilated, or otherwise becomes unus-able. All requests for duplicate or replacement cards must be submitted directly to the Training Center Coordinator (TCC) who issued the original card. The Course Director or Lead Instructor may advise the student to contact the TC that issued the original card, or the instructor may do so. The TC may set a fee for reissuing a card.
Course Card Tip Sheets and Templates
Only TCCs can access course card tip sheets and templates on the AHA Instructor Network website at www.ahainstructornetwork.org. To use the card templates, you will need Adobe Reader, which can be downloaded, for free, from Adobe’s website at get.adobe.com/reader/.
Each package of course cards comes with a tip sheet, and printed on the back is a practice sheet. Make extra copies of the practice sheet to test the alignment of the template before printing on the course cards.

Military Training Network (United States Only)
Since 1984, the AHA has recognized the Military Training Network (MTN) for Resuscitative Medicine Programs as equivalent to an AHA ECC region and national TC.
The MTN coordinates resuscitative medicine programs for the uniformed services. The Department of Defense Health Council at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences established these programs for the uniformed services.
For more information go to www.usuhs.mil/mtn/.
MTN Provider Certificates/Cards
• MTN provider cards for AHA courses are the equivalent of the corresponding AHA provider card (the MTN uses the AHA curricula).
• These cards are recognized within the Department of Desfense.
• These cards may not bear the AHA logo.
• MTN provider cards should be recognized by AHA TCs and Training Sites (TSs) when renewing provider status of Department of Defense personnel.
• The MTN may issue AHA provider cards.
• A person with a current MTN provider card may attend a discipline-specific AHA renewal or update course.

MTN Instructor Cards
• The MTN issues AHA Instructor cards.
• MTN Instructors who wish to teach outside the MTN must align with a civilian TC and meet its affiliation require-ments. These instructors will have dual instructor status and alignment and will issue cards appropriate to their audiences.
• MTN Instructors must meet all TC and MTN training requirements to maintain their status. All courses may count toward teaching requirements in both systems. It is the instructor’s responsibility to ensure that the MTN site and the TC are provided with course rosters.
MTN Training Site Faculty Cards
• The MTN appoints TS Faculty rather than TC Faculty or Regional Faculty.
• MTN TS Faculty appointments are not recognized outside the MTN and are not transferable to a civilian TC. An MTN TS Faculty member who aligns with a civilian TC will need to work with the new TC to establish TC Faculty status.

BLS Training Center FacultyBLS Training Center Faculty (TCF) members are appointed by their respective TCs. BLS TCF members are re-
sponsible for quality assurance and are the educational leadership for all BLS courses within their TC network.
TCF members conduct instructor courses, monitor new and renewing instructors, and conduct updates for the
TC’s instructors. The BLS TCF card and certificate are not an acceptable substitute for an instructor card and
do not verify instructor status. The TCF certificate/card template that TCs use when appointing TCF members
in their respective disciplines is accessible on the Instructor Network to TCCs only. The TCF document is set up
to auto-populate the card template at the bottom of the certificate. You will only need to complete the certificate
portion and then print and place it in the instructor’s record. You may issue the auto-populated card to the TCF.

responsible for quality assurance and are the educational leadership for all PALS courses within their TC network.
TCF members conduct instructor courses, monitor new and renewing instructors, and conduct updates for the
TC’s instructors. The PALS TCF card and certificate are not an acceptable substitute for an instructor card and
do not verify instructor status.
