Whenconfrontedwithanemergencysituation,itisimportanttobeconfidentinyourselftomakesmartdecisions.Theseguidelinesprovideyouwithbestpractices,knowledgeandoptionsintimesofdistress.Whilereadingthroughtheseproceduresandprinciples,thereareseveralimportantpointstoremember.
Thefirstkeytosuccessisyou.Youmustmakeyourownsafetyapriorityinordertohelpyourselfandthosearoundyou.
Followyourinstinctsandusecommonsense.Itisimportantnottopanic;toreactinacalm,rationalmanner;andbeawareofyourenvironment.ThereisnopossiblewayforSt.Joseph’sCollegetoknowofeverycircumstanceaheadoftime,whichiswhyweneedyoutothinkandactinyourbestinterestandofthosearoundyou.
Worktogetherandknowthereisstrengthinnumbers.Youmayfindcertainsituationsdauntingornearlyimpossibleforyoutotacklealone,buthelpfromotherscanprovideacompletelydifferentscenario.Wemaynotbethereatthetimeoftheincident,butassoonasemergencyservicesarenotified,helpisontheway.Theresponsetimeofthepolicedepartment,firedepartmentandemergencymedicaltechniciansatSJCLongIslandisoutstanding.Ifthereiseveranemergency,animminentthreattolifeoryouwitnessacrime,firstdial911,andthencontactcampussecurityimmediatelyafterward.
Ifyouseesomething,saysomething.Wecan’texpresshowimportantitisthatyoudoso.SJCusesacommunity-basedapproachtosecurity,whichhasserveduswellovertheyears.Neverhesitatetocallandneversecond-guessyourself.Whetheryouseeafireexitblocked,asuspiciousperson,astudentinmentaldistressorhearanalarmornoticeanythingunusual,pleasecallcampussecurity.Weapproacheverysituationwithconfidentialityandprofessionalism.

ACTIVESHOOTER/HOSTILEEVENT(AS/HE)EVACUATIONS:
Anactiveshooterorhostileevent(AS/HE)isstatisticallyveryunlikely,butyoushouldbepreparedforanyemergency.Watchthe“Run,Hide,Fight”videoproducedbyReadyHoustonandtheDepartmentofHomelandSecuritybyenteringitinanysearchengineorYoutube.
• NEVERPULLTHEFIREALARMinAS/HEsituations.Thesoundofgunfireoraphysicalconfrontationisverydistinctandwillhelpalertpeopletothedangerandemergencypersonneltolocatethesituation.Afirealarmcanlullpeopleintobelievingitis“justanotherdrill”andwilldrownoutimportsoundindicators.
• Immediatelyevacuatethecampusbyfootinthedirectionoppositeofthecrisisarea.DONOTgetintovehicles,asvehiclesinmassnumbershaveproventobeanineffectivemeanstoevacuatelargeemergenciesinatimelymanner.Vehicletransportationwillneedtobereservedforthosewithsignificantmobilityimpairments,aswellaskeepingtheroadwaysclearforemergencyresponsevehicles.Ifyouendupinatrafficjam,youarea“sittingtarget.”
• Fortunately,thenearestpoliceprecinctisnearby.Thismeansresponsetimewillbeveryquick,andeveninfoulweatheryoushouldreachshelterwhenleavingthecampusinashortamountoftime.Remembertokeepmovingawayfromthedangeruntilyoureachandpassseveralarmedemergencyservicepersonnel,andthenstillseekcover.
Run,Hide,Fight:
RUNWhenanactiveshooterisinyourvicinity:
• Haveanescaperouteandplaninmind(incaseoffireoranythreat).• Leaveyourbelongingsbehind.• Evacuateregardlessofwhetherothersagreetofollow.• Helpothersescape,ifpossible.• Donotattempttomoveorpointoutwoundedpeople.• Preventothersfromenteringanareawheretheactiveshootermaybe.• Keepyourhandsvisible.• Call911whenyouaresafe.• Ifrunningintheoutdoorsorlargeopenareas,gofromcovertocover.Placebuildings,

FIGHTOnlyasalastresortandonlywhenyourlifeisinimminentdanger:
• Attempttoincapacitatetheshooter.• Actwithphysicalaggression.• Actinunisonifpossible.• Improviseweapons:fireextinguishers,chairs,pens,pencils,rulers,scissors,staplers,
keys,shoes,rolledupmagazines,books,anything!• Throwobjectsattheshooter’seyesasyouattack.• Committoyouractions,donotstop.Yourlifemaydependonit.
WhenApproachingLawEnforcement:
• Remaincalmandfollowinstructions• Putdownanyitemsinyourhands(i.e.,bags,jackets).• Raisehandsandspreadfingers,andALWAYSkeephandsvisible.• Avoidquickmovementstowardofficers,suchasholdingontothemforsafety.• Avoidpointing,screamingoryelling.• Donotstoptoaskofficersforhelpordirectionwhenevacuating.

Thefirstofficerstoarrivetothescenewillnotstoptohelptheinjured.Rescueteamswillfollowtheinitialofficersandtreatorremovetheinjured.Knowthathelpisontheway.

• Immediatelyevacuatethecampusbyfoot.DONOTgetintovehicles,asvehiclesinmassnumbershaveproventobeanineffectivemeanstoevacuatelargeemergenciesinatimelymanner.Vehicletransportationwillneedtobereservedforthosewithsignificant
