Assistant Principals ReportSchools are Schools after allRecently I was fortunate to attend a Network Principal conference. The value of this day was clearly understood as we worked together to set goals for our schools and discuss what processes have worked well and how further improvements can be made. Working collegiately in this way shows that we are all in this together. Another key takeaway for me was that in every school students attend, they are provided an opportunity to learn and teachers are there to support them in this endeavour, students are challenged, work is submitted and feedback is given. Schools are schools after all and we are all in this to help young people achieve their personal best and become valuable members of society.

Basic expectationsFrom time to time it is important to remind the College community of some of our expectations when it comes to attending Emerald Secondary College. School Council has determined that we are a uniform school. As such, it is expected that all students will wear the correct uniform every day. We are in the transition from the old uniform to the new uniform. In 2019 all Year 7 and Year 8 students will wear the new uniform and the remainder of the school can continue to wear the old uniform. As items are required to be replaced, the new uniform will filter across the entire college. In 2020 all students will be required to wear the new uniform. We do have some of the old uniform for sale through the College with all items only $10, however; sizes may now be limited. We also have basic expectations regarding students arriving to class ‘Ready to learn’. This includes, but is not limited to, punctuality and bringing the right equipment to class. Students are also expected to show a level of respect towards their teachers and fellow students. I regularly mention that this level of respect should also be maintained by parents in their interactions with the College. Our College grounds are always being improved and cleaned up but there is a level of disrespect when it comes to litter. Can I please request parents speak to their young people about the importance of using the bins provided.

Bushfire AwarenessWorking in the hills has provided me with further insight into the very real risk of fire. Emerald Secondary College is a BARR school which means we are in a higher risk location. Recently we received a grant to help with the removal or reduction of fuel on college grounds. This will be ongoing throughout the remainder of the term and the Christmas holidays. There are a series of guidelines that we are working through to ensure the safety of our entire College community.

Art ShowIn the last newsletter we were preparing for the Art show. I have been extremely pleased with how the Art Gallery has become a showcase for our students’ work. On all school tours we spend time in this area and discuss how schools provide young people with an opportunity to build their talents in many different areas. Congratulations to Ms Mikieciuk and her team for providing these opportunities to our students and for the wonderful display that now graces our Art Gallery.

Buildings Grounds and OHSIt has been very pleasing to hear recently from members of the parent community that they have noticed many improvements in the buildings and grounds. As with all schools, it is important that we prioritise areas that need freshening up whilst also maintaining safety. Our annual Testing and Tagging has been completed. This is a good opportunity to inform parents and students that they cannot use power cords to charge their laptop on school grounds, especially if this has not been approved via a testing and tagging process by the school.Jonathon Rogers - Assistant Principal

Joel and Ash. The service assembly began with our very talented College concert band and solo vocalist Anya singing our Australian National Anthem. Jaicob read out the Ode and Sean played the Last Post. It was a time to reflect and a time to remember. Thank you to all those who contributed to our service assembly and to our staff and students who gave their respect during this service.

RespectRespect is a word we often hear but is not really understood. This is something that as a College community we feel is important to each and every member of our community. For our students it is important that they;

• Respect themselves as learners, try their best at all times and ask for help if necessary• Respect their friends giving them the chance to learn and achieve in every class• Respect their teachers giving them the chance to teach everyone in the class • Respect the environment we are in

Can I ask that all families please discuss what respect looks like to help us to support all our students in their learning journey, as well as all our staff and our college environment. Jodie Doble - Principal

Kickstart 2019 - 29th Nov – 12th DecEmerald Secondary College has a Whole School Kickstart program for two weeks from the 29th November to 12th December. Kickstart gives students extra class time for the best possible start for their 2019 course and allows for a smooth start to the 2019 year.

2018 subjects will finish on Tuesday November 27th and students will then move up to their next year level for 2019. The 2019 timetable will begin on Thursday 29th November, and students will be taking their 2019 subjects, with their 2019 teachers (where possible). There will be a Curriculum Day (student free day) held on Wednesday 28th November.

Kickstart AttendanceIn Kickstart the 2019 academic year begins, and attendance is mandatory. College expectations for attendance and academic performance are the same as for the usual school year. Senior School students should note that Kickstart attendance is mandatory and counts towards Unit 1&3 attendance. Year 10 – Values for LifeOn Friday 2nd November, Year 10 students attended an incursion as part of the PASE program run by a group called Values for Life. This session dealt with the realities of drug and alcohol use in our community and the consequences of this. It is important that as a community, we have frank, honest and open conversations about these difficult topics with our teenagers, as they transition into adulthood. The main point of the incursion was to highlight the potential risks in a non-judgmental way and to encourage students to adopt safer behaviours. The presenter used a range of interactive techniques and games to get students to think about how to take care of themselves and their friends, and celebrate in responsible ways. We encourage all parents to continue these conversations and to contact the school if they have any questions or concerns about their child.Steve Barrett - Year 10 Coordinator

Presentation Night - Change of DatePresentation Night is now being held on Tuesday 18th December in the Gym. The evening will start at 7.00 pm

Year 7 Dandenong Market and Plaza Excursion In splendid weather, our Year 7s spent the day exploring the sights and sounds of the Dandenong Market and Dandenong Plaza. Their objective was to collect data to use in their upcoming Humanities CAT for our Economics & Business Studies topic. In class, we have been learning about the interaction between consumers and business, which is the cornerstone of any modern economy.

Students had the opportunity to observe the ways in which businesses use strategies to entice consumers to spend their money, and how consumers can make choices about how to meet their needs and wants within a budget. Businesses want to make a profit and consumers want to get as much as possible by spending as little as possible. This interplay results in consumers deciding at which point they are willing to pay the price that is offered by the business - the point of equilibrium!

Our students were cooperative throughout the day as we met at agreed checkpoints, and they enjoyed the experience of some managed independence within the market and plaza complexes. We had a terrific day out, in a more relaxed setting than our normal classrooms, but with a shared experience that we can draw upon in future lessons in preparation for the CAT.Tanya Moran – Business Studies Teacher

Take the sting out of school costsStressed about the cost of school? Make this year different

Schooling can place huge financial stress on families, with many parents spending hundreds of dollars on books, uniforms, equipment, laptops, excursions, and fees – and just after the holiday season.

Saver Plus is a FREE matched savings and financial education program that can help ease the stress, by matching savings for education costs, dollar for dollar, up to $500.

Saver Plus participants make regular deposits in a savings account over a 10 – month period as well as complete financial skills workshops, known as MoneyMinded. When they reach their goal, their savings are matched up to $500 by ANZ, which developed the program with the Brotherhood of St Laurence.

The program is open to people with a Centrelink Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card, who have regular work (themselves or a partner), and who have a child at school or are studying themselves.

For Charlene Cerros and her husband education and extra-curricular activities for their four children aged four, five, eight and 11, is a big priority.

‘Education is massive for us because we believe that if anything is going to help you up in life, it’s your education’, says Charlene.

Charlene put the $500 Saver Plus matched contribution towards her son’s trumpet lessons, but says that what she learnt about saving was more valuable.

‘The MoneyMinded workshops were awesome – learning about compound interest, and ways to save on gas and electricity costs by simple things like closing the curtains or using door snakes that make a massive difference over the winter quarter.

I’ve been able to save more money by continuing those habits. There’s a peace that comes from knowing you can do that.’

Since 2003 more than 36,000 people have benefited from participating in Saver Plus. Independent research by RMIT University found that once completed 87 per cent of Saver Plus participants continue to save, 85 per cent have more control over their finances, and 93 per cent have better self-esteem.

Charlene says, ‘There’s less pressure on your family, on your relationship – that’s a wonderful thing. Because we now know that we can work and save and get out of debt – we can work and save towards buying a house.

I actually have two one dollar coins that my daughter taped to a paper with with the words “To Mum and Dad, this is for our house”.

Saver Plus is delivered in 60 locations across Australia by the Brotherhood of St Laurence, Berry Street, The Benevolent Society and The Smith Family and other local community agencies. The program is funded by ANZ and the Australian Government.

School savings tips from Saver Plus

• ask your school for an expenses list to see if you can pay for any costs via installments, such as school camps and excursions• develop a budget and do your research to find the best school bargains• hold a get-together with school parents, with children of different ages, to exchange children’s school clothing• add children’s names to all school items, so that any lost property is more likely to be returned. • buy school supplies in bulk that you know will be used regularly.
